Executive Insight Tip of the Week Issue #22, August 27, 2009 ISSN 1947-2889 -------------------------- Hi ! Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight. **Be the Expert** I've had a number of conversations recently about what it means to "be an expert." As I've reflected on these discussions, it's clear that there are actually two components to being an expert. The first is your actual expertise. So whether you're a CPA specializing in the non-profit market or a corporate attorney who focuses on international mergers, you need to have some specific technical competence in order to be "eligible" to be considered as an expert. When you have that expertise, however, you also need to let people know about it. So marketing is the second component, and this is the area where many people fall short. I've observed that many experts take their expertise for granted. They don't do a lot to publicize it, and as a result, they become their very own best kept secret. They don't let others know about it either because they don't know how to or they don't think it's a big deal. Do you do this? There are many ways you can break through your self-created secrecy and let people know what you know. Here are just a few ideas to get your juices flowing: - Write an article - Co-author a white paper - Speak to an association group - Get interviewed - Video a short segment and post it on YouTube Don't be your own best kept secret - too many people need what you have to offer, and are eager to know more. Maybe this is a project you can work on during these "dog days" of summer. Have a great week! Lisa © 2009 Lisa M. Strong leaders are clear about what they believe in and what they represent. People may not agree with you, but they'll respect that you take a stand. **Personal Power** Do you pay attention to your internal "tilt" level? There's usually something specific that puts us over the edge, and knowing what it is can keep you stable when you're feeling stressed. **Trend Watch** Are the super rich getting poorer?
