Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
Success Outside of Your Comfort Zone
Six months ago, a professional practitioner was asked to make a speech for one of his philanthropic organizations. Like so many people, public speaking was way out of his comfort zone. His close friend referred him to me for some coaching.
We worked together consistently in preparation for The Big Event. I knew that he needed alignment between his message and beliefs in order to diffuse his nervousness. So we crafted several vignettes that made it easy for him to speak from the heart. As a result, delivering the speech was as comfortable to him as wearing his favorite sweater (well, almost as comfortable...).
He demonstrated the same traits that I've observed every time I work with a superior performer: even though he's at the top of his game professionally, he is willing to do what is necessary to overcome a perceived weakness.
He began working on this speech in plenty of time to accomplish his objective, which was to build his confidence. He made steady, incremental progress in our regularly scheduled meetings. He practiced again and again to get comfortable.
Some reminders about the nature of true superstars (as opposed to self-declared superstars):
- They acknowledge when they need help, and seek counsel.
- Their egos don't get in the way of learning something new.
- They are receptive to feedback.
Could your superstars use a little polishing? Think about how your talented people could become even more effective.
And, by the way, he did a great job at The Big Event, and received genuine praise for the inspiration that he shared. In my mind, he was a rock star!
