Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
**Time for a Mini Break**
In the spirit of the unofficial start to the summer season, CBS
Sunday Morning aired a segment last Sunday about how little
vacation time Americans take.
It was interesting to learn that the U.S. is the only developed
country in the world whose companies are not under any legal
obligation to provide paid vacation. In fact, one in four Americans
have no paid vacation. The average American takes nine days of
vacation, and only 10% off two full weeks.
The sad thing is that sometimes taking vacation causes more stress
than not taking it. Some people fear that they'll lose their jobs
if they're away (out of sight, out of mind syndrome). Others are
afraid that they'll lose business opportunities if they're away.
And then there are those who are simply too fearful to disconnect,
so they go "on vacation", but live on their BlackBerries.
True, times are tough, so I'm not going to try to talk you into
taking vacation. I will advocate, however, that you take frequent
mini breaks to rest, relax and replenish. No, mini breaks won't
have the same impact as a real vacation, but they're a
reasonable alternative. Consider these ideas:
* Take a series of long weekends or day trips.
* On a slow day at work, take off the afternoon and go to the
botanical gardens.
* Play tourist in your town, and explore something new.
* End your work day early on Friday.
* Take your spouse or significant other on a date during the week.
Often.
I'm writing about this now because if you're not planning a
vacation in the near future, I want you to make sure that you have
some options.
If you take this advice, you'll be surprised how effective even a
little time off can be. It might not be the same as the real thing,
but it will make a difference.
Have a great week!
