Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
"Almost" Right
Have you ever wanted a decision to work out so badly that you made every excuse to justify it? And usually when you try so hard to make it work - when it's "almost" right - invariably something happens down the road that disappoints.
Recently, I assessed several candidates for a senior level position with one of my clients. Whoever is hired will have an impact throughout the organization, not just because of the position, but because he is an outsider.
I debriefed the assessments with the senior leadership team, and discovered that they were already favorably predisposed towards one candidate. Unfortunately, I was predisposed against the same person.
It was an interesting discussion, to be sure!
Although I think that now they have more insight about the criteria for their decision, I fear that that their eagerness to make a selection will influence them to be hasty rather than vigilant.
Sometimes you're so anxious to make a decision that you overlook "almost". Your confidence and optimism can mask the truth and an uncomfortable percentage of your decision is based on wishing and hoping.
When you are clear on your criteria for making a decision, the process of choosing is substantially easier. The challenge is that the criteria are not always apparent.
Taking the time to develop this sort of clarity will help you make better decisions, and will tend to keep you out of the "almost" zone. This may require a little more effort than you initially expected, but the results will be worth it.
Have a great week!
