Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight!
Getting into Focus
In recent years I've neglected going to the ophthalmologist. Recently, an eye irritation prompted a call for an appointment. I went in to take care of the irritation, but left with a prescription for glasses.
The outcome of my subsequent trip to the optician was a pair of progressive lenses. Getting used to these new glasses has turned into one of my more interesting challenges of the year. I didn't realize that my vision had deteriorated, so changing from my drug store reading glasses was a big change in itself. And getting used to progressive lenses takes time and patience.
As I began the process of adjusting to these glasses, I was struck by the metaphors (perhaps corny, but relevant) for business:
- Are you myopic, without a clear vision of things ahead?
- Can you envision the future, but don't pay attention to what's in front of you?
- Which "filters" color your actions?
- Are you tuned into what's happening in the periphery of your business?
- Do you have a blind spot about someone or something?
What with the constant distractions about the economy, unemployment and the stock market, things can get out of focus. Although we don't have control over the external events, we can control our daily lives.
Think about what you need to sharpen. Like my experience adjusting to progressive lenses, it may take time to adjust to seeing things differently (remember, "Objects may appear larger than they are").
Pace yourself, so that you make incremental, not monumental, adjustments. If you make too many modifications too quickly, you may stumble. Once things are back in focus, you can accelerate forward.
Learning to see from a new lens may be challenging at first, but in the end, your new clarity may open up new opportunities.
Have a great week!
