Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
"Love the One You're With"
The title of this classic Stephen Sills song seemed appropriate to borrow in honor of Valentine's Day this week. I hope that you had a good one, and that you've held on to the positive sentiments of the holiday throughout the week.
The topic of love in the workplace may seem a little unusual; however, when you think about it, most weeks we're with our colleagues for more hours than we spend with our families. If you don't at least like the people you work with ("like the ones you're with"?), it can create an unpleasant and sometimes even toxic work environment.
This comes to mind frequently when I'm working with clients whose team members don't communicate effectively or don't play well in the sandbox. It makes me wonder how people can be in close quarters, day in and day out, and not respect each other enough to at least show a little "like".
I often say that people don't need to become best friends with their co-workers, but if they really don't like each other, they should seriously question whether the job is worth it. After all, if you don't "like the ones you're with", discomfort and stress may be just around the corner.
Leaders need to be mindful of this. Don't assume that everyone likes each other. In fact, many times, you won't even know that issues exist until something bubbles up and erupts. If you find out about it then, it takes a lot more work to repair the damage and any residual bad feelings.
In this week punctuated by "love", why not take time to see whether your folks are at least "in like". You'll be glad you checked. (And, by the way, if you discover a previously unidentified challenge, please feel free to email me if you want to talk about it.)
Have a great week!
