Executive Insight
Tip of the Week

Hi !

Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.

Special Announcement

Are you baffled about how to move forward in this economic environment? Read our latest special report, What's the "New Normal"?, for some ideas on how to navigate.

Learning Moments

Have you ever done something a little out of your comfort zone that seemed daunting before you did it? Of course, you have! You also know, then, how great it feels when you blast through the fear and just do it. In fact, often you feel so good that it's hard to remember what made you nervous a few minutes earlier.

Lifelong learning is an important value to many entrepreneurs; in fact, many people learn aspects of their businesses while on the job. In thinking about this recently, I observed that we have many opportunities to apply this concept with our employees.

When you introduce a new project or concept to one of your people, it triggers a number of things:
  • The brain is stimulated differently as the "newness" of the idea creates additional neural pathways.
  • It creates "positive stress" with a mix of emotions related to doing something new.
  • It is an act of confidence that demonstrates your belief in your employee's ability.
My observation is these types of projects get waylaid because the manager thinks that s/he needs to be a subject matter expert in the new project. That's a mistake. You don't have time to be an expert in everything, and you don't need to be an expert to facilitate/coach/mentor the learning process of your people.

So, what have you held on the sidelines that could be turned into a productive opportunity to grow your business and your people? Give your people the chance to feel great by (temporarily) taking them out of their comfort zone.

Have a great week!

Leadership and the
Bottom Line
Have confidence in making the tough decisions that come with the territory of being a leader in your organization. They may not be easy, but don't have to be agonizing.

Personal Power
"I don't have time for ________." Whatever first came to mind when you read this sentence is exactly what you need to make time for.

Trend Watch
It's the moment of truth: you can no longer afford to do business with clients that abuse you by not paying their bill. Read this recent Wall Street Journal article for more insight.
