Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
A Gift of Surprise and Delight
How often are you dazzled by amazing service? Sadly, it happens so rarely that when you do experience it, it can be shocking.
I was on my way to meet a client one morning this week, when a bracelet slid off of my arm and on to the subway track. Disheartened, I didn't board the train, because I wanted to see if the bracelet was still in tact. Fortunately it was.
I went in search of a transit employee, and found a worker, Noel, who examined where I had dropped it. He told me that he'd be able to retrieve it, but he couldn't do it then because if he was discovered on the track, he risked being severely reprimanded.
Noel told me not to worry, and that he would get my bracelet. He asked me if I could meet him later that day at the front end of the platform of a particular subway stop. I was a little hesitant about this rendezvous, but decided to take a chance and agreed to this plan.
I asked Noel for his number so that I could phone him when I was on my way, and to my surprise, he produced a 4-color business card graced with an elegant grand piano. I learned that he teaches piano every day when he returns home from work.
I wouldn't have "seen" that persona under the hardhat, the safety vest and other workman's garb. So we talked about Mozart on that hot subway platform until the next train arrived and I went on my way.
If my encounter with Noel had ended then, I would have been satisfied. He was kind, sympathetic to my plight, and willing to do something that was out of the ordinary.
When we met later that day, though, he surprised me with a bag that contained a blue box. Inside the box was my silver bracelet, which he had brought to a jeweler to have polished.
Needless to say, I was flabbergasted!
I didn't know what to say. Of course, I'm grateful. And, he quite simply overwhelmed me by what he did.
Noel reminded me of the huge impact that can occur when you exceed someone's expectations. It seems that he is teaching more than piano, and I'm appreciative of this particular lesson.
Have a great week!
