Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
Ready - Set - Hire!
Of course, this story is a painful example of the overwhelming number of people who are looking for jobs. What interested me, however, was that the hiring executive made a conscious choice to be disciplined about the process of interviewing. He had clear criteria for background and experience, asked a fixed set of interview questions, and assessed the candidates' job competencies.
The likelihood that he made a successful hire is greater because he used a systematic approach. It reminded me, though, that so many companies interview people and desperately try to squeeze square pegged candidates into round holed jobs.
When you resume hiring in your company, there are some important things to keep in mind.
- Create a plan for the key positions you want to add, including prioritizing the various positions.
- Build a systematized process that creates a more objective, unified approach to hiring.
- Evaluate the competencies needed for these various positions, and a method of assessing candidates.
One last tip: don't get caught in the chemistry trap: just because you like someone during an interview doesn't mean that the person is right for the job.
It's not too early to begin thinking about your hiring process. After you've taken these first few steps, feel free to give us a call to learn how our process can help yours.
Have a great week!

Leadership and the
Bottom Line
Making tough decisions about your people can be stressful. Don't react impulsively; instead, think it through and discuss with someone who can give you objective feedback.
Personal Power
When you offer someone help, ask "how can I help?" instead of "can I help?" It's likely you'll then make a more meaningful contribution.
Trend Watch
Garcia is now the eighth most popular last name in the U.S. CNN has followed seven Garcias to show how Latinos are changing and how America is changing them.
