Hi !
Welcome to this week's issue of Executive Insight.
Snow Days
If you live in the northeast/mid-Atlantic corridor, you've been experiencing "Winter Wonderland" in recent days. Yesterday brought the latest storm, along with an interesting observation.
The weather resulted in the cancellation of many appointments. That's normal and expected. (My one exception was having breakfast with my friend, Mark, who came from the suburbs to his office in the city, in spite of the weather forecast. Thank you, Mark!)
After breakfast, the rest of my appointments cancelled, so I moved to plan B. I left voice mails and sent emails, and as the day went on with little response, I realized that many people were home, and more or less had taken the day off.
More significantly, I discovered that people needed the excuse to take a day off without declaring that they were taking a day off.
This is meaningful, because it highlights how overcommitted we are. In today's 24/7 boundary-less work environment, it's a badge of honor to work long hours and not take time off.
A weather challenge creates a different rhythm. It's acceptable to work from home, and you function at a different pace. You slow down. You putter. You recharge.
Even though we think we can plow ahead on all cylinders at all times, an unexpected interruption can be a welcome breather.
Why wait for the interruption? Schedule some well-deserved time to recharge. In fact, take advantage of the upcoming President's Day weekend for some R&R.
Have a great week!
