If your pickleball world has seemingly come crashing down on you because your new rating has dropped, please don't slit your wrists or form an old fashioned
lynch mob just yet.
First of all, it is very important that you know the meaning of the phrase, "LEGACY RATING". That is your old 2 digit rating that we've always known, loved and for many, abused.. My legacy rating happens to be a 5.0. Ok so I'm overrated. :). But that is my old rating and it remains with me today, even though I also now have this new 4 digit rating called a UTPR
Rating.
The good news is that from now until after our USAPA National tournament in November, ONLY THE OLD LEGACY RATING WILL BE USED for any sanctioned event, including Nationals. So no need to be upset about your new rating yet, because it will not be used for anything for awhile.
In the meantime, there are three moving parts that you need to be keenly aware of:
For the next 60-90 days, everyone should take the time to login into your Members area of the USAPA website and click on the link that says: "CLICK HERE FOR PLAYER TOURNAMENT HISTORY REVIEW".
This should show you every tournament you've played in in the last three years as long as the results are in PickleballTournaments.com.
Check and make that information is correct because this is the core data that is being used to create your new UTPR rating. The old term, "if you see something, say something" now applies to your tournament history data. If you find data missing, let the USAPA know. If you see data that is clearly wrong
or not yours, hurry up and let the USAPA know. This data is yours and needs to be correct in order for the new system to generate an accurate rating for you. For the next 60-90 days the USAPA will allow you to request they review your data discrepencies...and they will review and correct the data for you.
EVERYONE SHOULD BE DOING THIS SO THEY HAVE AN ACCURATE NEW UTPR RATING.
The second moving part which WILL affect your new rating is that players everywhere are getting their personal tournament data reviewed and discrepancies reported back to the USAPA for correction. This means that if you played any of
those players in any tournament that is in your tournament history, it IS GOING TO CAUSE YOUR RATING TO CHANGE automatically.
That is all part of the natural process that has to occur before you end up with a brand new, hopefully accurate, UTPR rating that will serve you and others well in the years ahead.
Once the system has enough data to accurately create a player's rating, the days of running into sandbaggers will be forever gone. But
this will take some time. The tournament data is the key and the more data the system has, the more precise the ratings will be.
So please review your data today. It is the future of well run tournaments and level playing brackets.
Moving Part Number 3 answers the question, "how can my mixed partner and I have different mixed ratings if we have never played with anyone else?" The answer is this:
Every player's mixed rating is calculated using your Men's or Women's Doubles rating as the starting point. So let's say all your Men's Doubles tournament data creates a UTPR rating of 3.512. That 3.512 is used as your starting point and then your Mixed Doubles tournament data is added in and calculated to come up with your new UTPR Mixed Rating.
So hope this helps a bit. It will take some time to smooth out, but it undoubtedly will
and all will be right with the pickleball world.
The future is bright and fun for tournament players.
See you on the courts.
