The Next Poetry Night in Davis Takes Place on July 16th with Julia B. Levine -- Meanwhile, Happy 4th of July!

Published: Thu, 07/02/15

Dear Friends of Poetry,

Because of the impending holiday, we will not be holding Poetry Night tonight in Davis. I myself am focusing my poetic fervor on revisions of the Independence Day poem that I get to read in Community Park in Davis just before the singing of our National Anthem Saturday evening at 9:30. Perhaps I will see you there.

On July 16th, at the John Natsoulas Gallery we will feature one of my favorite Davis poets, Julia Levine.

Julia Levine has won numerous awards for her work, including the 2015 Northern California Poetry Award for her latest collection, Small Disasters Seen in Sunlight. She won the 2003 Tampa Review Prize for her collection, Ask; the 1998 Anhinga Poetry Prize and bronze medal from Foreword magazine for her first collection, Practicing for Heaven, as well as a Discovery/The Nation award. Her latest poetry collection, Small Disasters Seen in Sunlight, inaugurated the Barataria Poetry Series for Louisiana State University Press in 2014. She has work appearing in several new anthologies, including The Places That Inhabit Us, The Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry, and The Bloomsbury Anthology of Contemporary Jewish American Poetry. Levine earned a PhD in clinical psychology from UC Berkeley; she lives and works in Davis, California.

You might have heard Julia B. Levine on Insight on Capital Public Radio this morning. She tells great stories, including about her dad, her children, and Ogden Nash.

Happy 4th of July weekend to you and your families. See you on July 16th!

P.S. I am hoping to finish writing three (!) books by the end of this summer. Details to come.
