Monthly Quote - Overcoming Overwhelm

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
Christopher Reeve quotes (American Actor, Film Director and Activist. 1952-2004)

Call-to-Action

Reflect upon one thing that you have overcome or a time in your life when you persevered in spite of being overwhelmed

First acknowledge and congratulate yourself on that victory.
Second, try to remember what how you felt, what you were thinking, and what you did to find the strength and make a mental or written note of it.
Finally, the next time you face an overwhelming obstacle, tap back into the place of strength from the mental note you made.

Note from Cecilia: Setting High Bars Can Cause Overwhelm

 Feature Article: Overcoming Overwhelm

Forward the Action: Identifying Your Triggers

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the November edition of Power in Action. This month, we discuss the topic of being overwhelmed.

In a previous issue we talked about the trend of being too busy and some tips to manage it. When all of that busy-ness reaches the point overwhelm, however, we are at a whole new level.

When you are merely busy, there is a chance that you are still in control. Once you reach the point of overwhelm, your activities have you. We all reach this point occasionally in our lives and I am not too sure we can avoid it all together.

Preparing your first Thanksgiving dinner for your extended family seemed like a good idea - you just didn't know how much work it really was (and that the turkey needed to thaw in the fridge for how many days?)

Learning about your competitors, expanding your skills, managing your finances, dealing with the added challenges of a tight economy, taking on a hobby, dealing with kids, etc., etc., etc. All of these things individually can become overwhelming at times and collectively the probability is even higher.

There is good news, though. Overwhelm can certainly be managed if you learn how to spot it quickly and practice a few quick techniques to put things back in perspective. Once you become efficient at managing it, your time overwhelm may only last mere moments.

One of the keys to success is setting high goals and working to achieve them. Master your overwhelm today to allow your bar for success to be set higher and higher.

Have a powerful day!

Overcoming Overwhelm

Look in any thesaurus and the synonyms for overwhelm are pretty awful: overpower, subdue, oppress, quash, engulf, swallow, submerge, bury, suffocate.
Groan.
To anyone who's experienced overwhelm, and that's plenty of us, those words may be all too familiar. Whether the overwhelm is sudden or cumulative, chronic or acute, the feeling is one of drowning, immobility and powerlessness.

Teri, 36, a married mother of two, has always been a hard worker and it's paid off: In a six-year period, she has been promoted four times. Lately, however, she just doesn't feel the enthusiasm for her work that she used to. She's often tired, impatient and makes more mistakes. She also feels increasingly distant from her husband and kids. On paper, her life is everything she's ever wanted. Then why isn't she enjoying it more?

One clue: Several months ago, Teri started putting in more hours at work. She started burning out as well as neglecting other areas of her life. She wasn't managing her physical and mental energy well.

A less obvious clue: Teri had lost sight of her passions. She worked, mothered and was a wife. But she no longer danced or painted, and she had stopped the political activism that had so fired her up in her younger years. An essential part of her, her passionate nature, had, in effect, atrophied much like an unused muscle.

Note from Cecilia: Having Balance and Performance

Feature Article: Building Endurance for Maximum Performance

Forward the Action: Managing Your Energy

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the July edition of Power in Action. This month, we discuss the topic of building endurance.

Sometimes we get stuck in the trap of thinking that just working harder will get us better results. In fact, it appears to be a badge of honor to be too busy and out of balance. When we are in that stage, we feel we have some kind of bragging rights.

During my tenure as a corporate consultant to Fortune 500 companies, I learned how to build endurance. During the first year, I worked all the time - few breaks, lunch at my desk, on the weekends, and at home. I got my work done, but I also go smarter.

I knew that pace was not sustainable if I wanted to maintain good health and good relationships. Therefore, I slowly added balance. I cut the work week down to six days, and then five. I increased the priority of my workouts and skipped them less often. I came home at a reasonable hour and spent time with my husband. I carved out time to regularly engage in spiritual practices. By the end of my second year, I had a more reasonable, more balanced life.

Guess what happened? I was working fewer hours, but my productivity soared. Soon, my colleagues began asking me my secret.

No secret really. I was managing my energy and pushing myself to be more productive during every hour I did spend working.

I value results gotten efficiently more than I do any ego boost that comes from being able to outwork someone. If you change your mindset about the value of being busy, perhaps you can create more balance in your life as well.

Have a powerful day!
Cecilia

Building Endurance for Maximum Performance

It's getting harder and harder to be a work-a-holic. It appears that there was a time when just working longer hours was enough to get ahead. However with rapid advances in technology designed to pack more productivity into every minute of our days and to keep us connected 24/7, we seemed to have reached a point where doing more is resulting in less productivity.
We all have gained a greater appreciation for working hard but seem to have forgotten the importance of playing hard as well. For the entrepreneur and the corporate executive, maintaining energy levels and increasing endurance for peak performance is becoming a critical competitive edge.

Note from Cecilia: Entrepreneurship - Pathway to Prosperity

Feature Article: Acting Like an Entrepreneur

Forward the Action: Putting on an Owner's Hat

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the June edition of Power in Action. This month, we discuss the topic of entrepreneurship.

I spent this past Saturday, along with my 10 year old daughter, at a business plan competition for middle-school students. A group of 11 - 13 years olds presented their business ideas and subjected themselves to the questioning of a panel of judges - entrepreneurs and private equity investors.

These children, who had worked all year to learn the basics of entrepreneurship, develop a product or service, and write a defensible business plan, were confident and self-assured as they presented their plans with passion.

The discussion of the judges afterwards was that these students were the type of people they wanted to hire in their businesses or the types of entrepreneurs whose businesses they would like to invest in.

These students had, in essence, taken the first major steps along the pathway to prosperity.

You see, thinking and acting like an entrepreneur is not just for people who want to start and run their own businesses (even though I believe each of us actually is running our own professional services business - but that is another story.) The thought processes and success principles necessary to own and run a profitable business are applicable and helpful in any endeavor.

As you go about your day, it may be valuable to take a lesson from these students and ask yourself, What would an entrepreneur do?

Have a powerful day!

Acting Like an Entrepreneur Within Corporate Walls

Quitting a job and moving out on your own can be a risky and scary thing for corporate professionals. The key success factors of being an entrepreneur are very different from what it takes to be successful inside company walls- or so we used to think. Today, companies are realizing the benefits and rewarding employees for entrepreneurial traits.

Companies, however, aren't the only ones to benefit from the entrepreneurial spirit of their staff. Anyone with aspirations of owning and running their own business would do well to hone their skills within their current company, using someone else's resources. Taking risks from inside a corporation can be the best preparation for eventually venturing out into the world of entrepreneurship.

The words entrepreneur and corporation don't usually show up in the same sentence. One connotes a penchant for creative, seat-of-the-pants risk-taking, while the other usually suggests we've always done it this way risk aversion.

But out-of-the-box thinking is more necessary than ever in today's marketplace, as corporations respond to changes in the world economy. Professionals working within corporations are being increasingly rewarded for using entrepreneurial skills to meet challenges in innovative ways.

Note from Cecilia: Changing Your Beliefs or Your Actions

Feature Article: Money Talks, But What's It Really Saying

Forward the Action: Determining Your Money Associations

 Product Spotlight: Renegade University

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the May edition of Power in Action. This month, we discuss the topic of money.

Money is a must have resource that influences every aspect of our lives. I challenge you to think of one area that is not affected in some way by your financial position. How you eat, sleep, take care of your body, entertain, educate yourself, build a business, entertain yourself, get around, relax, and express your generosity are all shaped by your access to funds.

Given all of its importance, however, we don't, as a society, systematically teach people how to effectively use this powerful resource as a tool to accomplish our goals. Instead, we are taught, consciously or subconsciously, to covet, fear, worship, horde, or squander it.

Just as with physical health, most of us know what we are supposed to do to be financially healthy. (And if we don't know the information is certainly readily available.) Yet our emotional attachments are what keep us from acting upon that knowledge.

We could all save ourselves a lot of angst and time by getting a clear understanding of what our true beliefs are concerning money and deciding to either change our beliefs to ones that better align with our goals, or change our actions to align with our beliefs.

I hope you choose the path of changed beliefs.

Have a powerful day!
Cecilia

Money Talks, But What's It Really Saying
The Real Reason You May Not Be as Profitable as You Would Like

Everyone goes into business with the stated intention of being profitable. (Even nonprofits need to generate enough income to continue and expand their operations.) We are also flooded with information on what to do with our money - yet, so often we are don't take the steps in our personal lives or in our businesses to ensure profitability. Perhaps our internal belief system around money has something to do with it.

We live in a culture that encourages debt and denies the lost art of delaying gratification. And, like color that fades on a cheap paint job, the repercussions of this lifestyle are beginning to show in both our economy and our personal lives.

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the April edition of Power in Action. This month's topic is about having lots of passions, something to which I can clearly relate. I truly am a Renaissance Soul (read the feature article to find out exactly what I mean.) I picked math as my major in college because it would prepare me to do anything I wanted.

A career in strategy consulting allowed me to gain experience in multiple industries, and more importantly to develop the skill to add value in any industry - regardless of my experience in it.

I have worked with Fortune 500 companies, small and middle market companies, private equity firms, foundations, nonprofits, churches and government agencies. Do I have any focus at all?

Of course I have a focus. There is a common theme throughout this broad experience base. I love to tackle and resolve complex problems in a way that leads to results and drives value for all stakeholders.

The real question for you to ask yourself is whether your passions are being used to support or hinder the execution of your goal. Passion has long been identified as a key ingredient for success. For some, finding their passion is an issue. For others, it's managing multiple passions.

Which ever challenge is yours, a commitment to action can help increase your success. Join us on this month's Forward the Action Call to learn how.

Have a powerful day!

Too Many Passions?
Challenge or Asset for Long-Term Success

Successful entrepreneurs know that it is critical not to fall in love with any one idea. Instead, they fall in love with the idea of starting or growing successful businesses. Some focus is just one industry; others have ventures in multiple industries simultaneously. Most have the ability to manage and profit from multiple passions. What is seen as a flaw by many could just be a hidden entrepreneurial strength

Jeff is nearing age 50 and has followed one passion after another into a variety of careers. Although each choice made perfect sense to him, his parents and friends keep asking when he's going to get serious and rise to the top in just one profession.

The old saying: Jack-of-all-trades, master of none! reveals the bias against those who choose a varied work life rather than committing to a unidirectional path. There was a time, however, when society admired such a person. In fact, some of our greatest contributors have been talented in a variety of areas.

 Product Spotlight - Power Circle

Business Owners,

I think it is safe to say that when you started your business, you didn't say to yourself, I want to own a business where I work all time and earn just barely enough to live off of. And I want to only be able to impact a small number of people while doing it.

No one goes into business with that as their aspiration, yet many business owners find themselves in just that situation.

Forward the Action: Complete an unfinished project

Product Spotlight: Power Circle begins March 24th

 Note From Cecilia

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Power in Action! I have designed this ezine specifically to enable more people to achieve the business and personal success they desire.

Given the current economic environment, there are few people who have not been negatively impacted in the past year and even fewer who have not paused to rethink the current path they are on for realizing their dreams.

This month's issue is focused on personal productivity because we all have an increasingly large load to carry - managing our current jobs/running our current businesses, maintaining a healthy family life and personal relationships, taking care of our health, and navigating our way to survival through and thriving after this global financial crisis.

There is much advice being given that, if taken, could cause you to go in many directions. This leads not to success but increased stress.

Having a personal mission statement, as is discussed in the article below, is a critical navigation tool. Mine is:

To help people realize their potential to change the world and to equip them to do so
That's what this ezine is about. That's what the InPower coaching system is about. And that's what Power Circles are about.

Special Offer! - Discount on Power Circle

Establishing and maintaining a path towards success is difficult to do alone. Coaching is a great way to maintain focus and accelerate results. Group coaching provides the added benefit of peer learning and accountability.

On March 24th, I am starting the next Power Circle, a group of only 10 people who will commit to working with me and each other over the next twelve months to set and achieve goals that will lead to professional and personal success.

Given the challenging financial time, I am providing a discount of over 30% for the March program only.

Registration must be completed before March 18th to qualify for the discount.

Have a powerful day!
