PROFILE: Who tried to delete 80% of Jesus' sayings from Scripture?
Published: Thu, 07/20/17
• Black: Means misquoted… Jesus never said it
• Grey: He never said it but it sounds like Jesus
• Pink: Jesus may have said something similar
• Red: Jesus said it or something very close to it1
Dishonoring Christ? They voted that about 80% of the “red letters” in the New Testament attributed to Jesus were misquotes or fabrications invented by anonymous Gospel writers who had never actually met Jesus. In fact, only one verse in the entire Gospel of John made it as high as “pink.” Ironically, it was John 4:44 “For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.” Perhaps we could add the Jesus Seminar to the places where Christ’s words are not given due honor.

The Jesus seminar was co-founded by John Dominic Crossan and the late Robert Funk. A prolific author, Crossan became a media darling, appearing on the major news networks and receiving widespread coverage in the weekly news magazines and countless newspapers. A former Catholic, Crossan still identifies a Christian although he is not an active member of any organized church. He professes a deep love for the Bible but he believes very little of it is literally true. Nevertheless, he has a winsome, likeable style and is a fascinating speaker. His bestselling books have helped make him the most important and popular Historical Jesus2 scholar of our time. Traditional Christians scholars, however, question both his methodology and conclusions. That controversy is the subject matter of this Profile. I hope it becomes a helpful addition to your Profile collection.

2 “[S]cholars in this tradition seek to separate the man Jesus from all the religious ‘myth’ that has grown up around Him. The Jesus of history was a man. The Jesus of the gospels, the ‘Christ of faith,’ is a theological construct – the myths built around and upon the man Jesus by the early Church and its leaders.” Timothy Oliver, “Who Do You Say I Am?” Watchman Fellowship, Arlington, Texas,
