Hi ,

Welcome to the June Put Old on Hold Newsletter!

Here's what's goin' on:

Your Suggestions and Advice Are Needed

The last two months I ran a survey asking readers what they need to help get through the mature years, not just "successfully" but spectacularly. Below is one response. Can you contribute the benefit of your knowledge or experience? In your response, please give permission to publish. Your identity will be withheld unless you request otherwise. Here it is:

"I'd like to see more feedback from people who have found second careers, new families or relationships, a renewed sense of adventure, or a new sense of commitment to fulfilling their dreams. I'd also like to hear what they think was misguided advice or just a dumb platitude that had no value for keeping life interesting or keeping them healthy. There's a lot of nonsense and superficial garbage out there. I want to know from people who have lived through it how they made a transition or kept their lives joyful and stimulating in unique ways according to their own rules and in response to their own lives' wisdom."

Other things:

If you have not been checking out The Links page, please take a look. There is so much that is helpful. For example, if you are taking a bone building drug (which can lead to fractures!) perhaps you would do just as well with a calcium and vitamin D supplement and avoid the potential side effects of the prescription drug according to a new study. It is interesting that vitamin D has been added to some of the bone building drugs.

Here's another: Depression among the elderly is increasing.  A new study shows Omega-3 may help reduce symptoms. If it doesn't help, at least you will be spared potential alarming side effects rattled off on TV commercials for the latest and greatest depression cure that ultimately may not help either.

As I look for information that may interest you each month it is clear that for the most part health is in our own hands -- the result of how we live. Given the future of health care and health care costs it behooves everybody to be more proactive in taking care of their health. Have an open mind and educate yourself. To the degree that you can avoid "the health care system" dominated by the pharmaceutical industry, the better off you will be, in my opinion.

Are You Green Enough?

If your kids or grandkids have seen the video in which All Gore tells an audience of impressionable teens that they know things their parents don't know, and as a result the kids are on fire to save Mother Earth, you will be amused by "The Green Thing" article. Read it and see if you agree, especially if you are part of the generation that washed baby diapers and hung them outside on the line to dry.

Funny Talking Dog Video

http://youtu.be/nGeKSiCQkPw

If you love dogs, you must watch this video. It brought back memories of a dog we used to have --a sneaky Beagle named Brewster -- a bossy beast that pretty much ran things around our house. One day he figured out how to open the refrigerator door and ran off with the remains of a ham. When we caught him gnawing away at it we advised him that the refrigerator escapade was the last straw. He ignored  us and blissfully continued to chew on the ham bone. He died soon after from cancer, but he enjoyed being sneaky right till the end.
