QBOTMC News - World's Fair Puzzle Block, Quilt Backings and Tuna Potato Croquettes

Published: Tue, 04/25/17

Hi ,

We hope you had a great week this week!  After writing last week how it's getting colder
here now, we've had a glorious few days here, with lovely warm days and not too cool
nights.  I just looked out my studio window too, and saw my first Jonquil flower of the
season!  I'm going to ignore the fact that it's not really supposed to be flowering just yet,
and I'm going to pretend that we're having lovely 'spring-y' weather now too.

(Anzac Day was warm, and that's unheard of here - it's always FREEZING when we're
standing at the early morning service.)

I do know why it's still warm - it's because the kids have just gone back to school... in full
winter uniform!  They're going to be warm little munchkins for the rest of the week!!!

This week's block is called the World's Fair Puzzle Block.  It's an interesting pieced block,
and one that would make a fab scrappy quilt I think.

We found a few great tips for quilt backings this week too -

Angela Pingel shares this handful of quilt backs to consider next time you’re finishing a quilt
in her book, "A Quilter’s Mixology":

Option 1: Four large cuts pieced to meet at the quilt back center.(Like a big 4-patch)

Option 2: A strip pieced horizontally into a single seamed pieced back. This is a useful option
when you have a good amount of yardage but not quite enough. It gives you the extra length
you need.

Option 3: A back composed of fat quarters. I often end up with a collection of fat quarters that
I’m not quite sure what to do with. The bonus with these is that they can be from the same
fabric line and have a natural cohesion.

Option 4: A back that uses up those extra blocks you may have made for the quilt front. Waste not,
want not! Put those blocks to good use and enjoy them, even on the back.

'You are only limited by your imagination! Backings can be as simple as you like or as creatively
complex as you like. It’s entirely up to you and your personal preferences'. –AP

I'm going to try this recipe for a fussy boy's school lunches, but I think it sounds yum for
dinner too!

Tuna and Potato Croquettes

Ingredients

    500g/1lb potatoes, peeled, diced
    2 x 185g / 6.5oz cans tuna in oil, drained, flaked
125g /4.5oz can corn kernels, drained, rinsed
    3 green onions, sliced
    1 egg, lightly beaten
    1/3 cup plain flour
    1/4 cup canola oil
Salad greens and lemon wedges, to serve

Method

Step 1

Place potato in a large saucepan. Cover with cold water. Bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce
heat to medium. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain. Return to pan. Roughly mash.
Transfer to a shallow bowl. Place bowl in the freezer for 5 minutes to cool.

Step 2
Add tuna, corn, onion and egg to potato. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
Using moist hands, shape 3/4 cup mixture at a time into 8 croquettes.

Step 3
Line a baking tray with baking paper. Place flour on a plate. Roll croquettes in flour to coat.
Place on prepared tray. Cover. Place in freezer for 5 minutes.

Step 4
Heat oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cook croquettes, turning, for
4 to 5 minutes or until golden and heated through. Serve with salad greens and lemon wedges.

Maybe a nice Spring meal!!?

Keep an eye out for this week's bag patterns arriving shortly.

Until Next Week - Happy Quilting!
