Week
This week I
headed out and took my mum to see the musical CATS, which is playing
for a limited season here in Melbourne. I missed it first
time around, so it was a nice day out away from the office.
Are you using Your Social
Media Profiles Effectively? There's no
escaping it - Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) is here

keep your social media profiles current. That's huge!
We also understand the massive TO DO list every business

How to Write Blogs that Drive Traffic
Blogs are everywhere on the
internet. Businesses, professionals and even ordinary people with a
passion for writing and sharing their ideas have joined
the blogosphere. The competition today is very stiff but those who can
come up with unique and engaging content reap the rewards in terms of
traffic.
A blog is short for web log. It
is sort of a personal website featuring shorter posts and content that
is updated regularly. Unlike a website, a blog usually
does not include as many
features although it can also stand as a mini website. The approach,
however, is more casual and personalized.
Writing blogs does not require
a standard formula. But there are certain rules to follow particularly
regarding proper usage of the English language. This will allow
you to communicate your message clearly to your target
audience and to let your readers easily understand what you are trying
to convey to them.
If you're not yet a
pro at
writing, keep learning the ropes to increase your knowledge. Make it a
point to read articles often, preferably daily, whether they
be in magazines, newspapers or on the internet. This will
expose you to different writing styles, the correct use
of grammar, spelling, punctuation, focus and
structure. Once you get to know how to write, you can learn to
follow the rules.
Your goal in writing a blog is
to convey your message as clearly as possible and be understood by your
readers. If you want to influence your readers, then you have to ensure
that what you're writing makes sense to them.
Providing quality content is a
major factor in driving traffic to a blog. This means you have to give
your readers something interesting and fresh to read on a regular
basis. If you can do this, you will encourage them to return to your
site the next time and eventually as often as they go online.
For personal blogs, content can
be a combination of personal opinions and interesting or funny news and
trivia that you think your readers will like. It can be on any topic so
long as it's worth reading. Providing more detail will engage
your
target audience so go ahead and elaborate. Just don't make
your post
too long.
For commercial or business
blogs, content should be closely related to your business niche using
the appropriate
keywords. It can
range from details on a new product or service you're
offering and its unique features to company or industry news and events
you've got lined up
in the future. Interesting things took place during a company
event can be good topics as well. Helpful information such as tips and
the latest strategies you can share with your readers to solve their
problems are also most welcome.
Remember that whatever content
you are writing, keeping your posts light and not too serious is vital.
The worst you can do is bore your readers so be light hearted
and
funny, if you like, to keep your readers coming back. An ideal gauge
would be is this - if you're
satisfied with what you have written and the way you've
written it,
then it's sure to appeal to others too - a great way to
drive traffic back to your blog.

Five
Minutes with...
Donna Marie
Coggins
of Jacaranda Business Support Services
Question
1 What
has been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge in business was more prevalent when my son was
younger. As a sole-parent living an hour away from any family members
or close friends, I didn't have anyone to help with
baby-sitting when
needed, particularly if I wanted to go to an event of a morning,
evening or weekend. I registered with Family Day Care and was blessed
with a wonderful Day Care Mum who was a God-send on so many occasions
and became a good friend too. Sometimes, where appropriate, my son
would come with me, which has been great in that he gained so much from
the experience too.
Question
2 If
you had to start your business again from scratch, what would you do
differently?
To be honest, I don't think I'd do anything
differently. My business
and direction have definitely changed and grown since the business
began almost 11 years ago, but that's to be expected. I know
I've
always done the best I could with the knowledge, experience and
resources available at the time. Some of the things that
didn't work or
that have changed since the business began were actually necessary to
be able to get to where I am now.
Question
3 Who
do you admire and why?
There are so many people I admire but undoubtedly the main person is
Lisa Curry-Kenny. I think Lisa is a remarkable lady and I love the way
she manages to blend her family, career and personal needs. I bought
Lisa's book, Get Up & Go! when it was released in
1998 and have
read it so many times. One of my philosophies in life, thanks to Lisa,
is that, "You can't ask anymore of yourself if
you've given everything
you've got." Sometimes things don't go to
plan, but if you gave it your
best shot, that's what matters. Lisa Curry-Kenny is #1 on my
list of
people I would love to meet.
Question
4 It
takes a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in business.
What keeps you motivated?
I'm very grateful that I am a really driven person. I have a
clear
vision of what I want to do with my life and what I want to achieve and
that motivates me more than anything else. I'm a firm
believer in
setting goals, taking action and that you get what you focus on. I love
that most mornings I can wake up excited that I can get back to doing
what I love throughout the day. To be able to do that, I am strict on
the work that I take on these days in that I only do what I enjoy doing
and can feel passionate about. Usually, for me, feeling unmotivated is
a sure sign that I need some time out, so a day or ½ day off
- doing
something totally unrelated to work - is the best solution.
Question
5 What
are your 3 biggest success tips?
- Research, plan and then just do it.
- Find role models who inspire you - within
your
industry, in business and anywhere else. Discover what makes them tick,
what makes them successful and why you admire them, then build those
qualities you admire most into your own persona. When you find yourself
uncertain as to what to do, ask yourself, "What would
so-and-so do?" or
"How would they handle this?"
- There will always be people who will criticise you,
tell you why you can't do something or that you're
doing it wrong, or
who will try to put you down when you are finding your success
- these
people are the 'dreamtakers'. Don't let
them discourage you. Do your
own research; live by your own standards, ethics and rules and you will
be able to hold your head high knowing that you've followed
your dreams
and lived life respecting your own values. Spend as much time as
possible 'hanging out' with people who encourage,
inspire and make you
feel good.
