Wendy's
Week
Out and About
Friday
night saw me off to the Grand Hyatt to attend the Telstra Business
Awards - what an amazing night!
I had the pleasure of meeting Anne Fulwood (right), along with
many other inspiring business owners, including 88 years young Dorothy.
New Look & New Pix Saturday was
a day of total fun. First hair, then a spot of makeup before
meeting up with Anthaea Jones, official Savvy Web
Women photographer for a photo shoot to capture the new look.
The short hair has surprised a few ladies at recent events who
didn't recognise me, so time for a few updated shots. Stay
tuned. Supporting Fitted for Work Attend our
event and support our chosen charity, Fitted
for Work, an organisation that supports the long term
unemployed and
disadvantaged women obtain work, maintain employment and ultimately
achieve financial independence.
If you have any items of clothing to donate, particularly shoes and
handbags, please bring those along to the event and we'll arrange for
them to be given to Fitted for Work.

How
Email Autoresponders can help streamline your Business
Autoresponders are perfect
tools for busy business people. In
fact, set them up correctly and autoresponders can
help you reply to your huge volume of email without even touching your
computer.
What is an autoresponder?
An
autoresponder is a type of computer program that automatically responds
to your
emails as they enter your computer inbox. People
will receive an instant response from you, based on the rules you have
set for each type of email.
How can you use an
autoresponder? Autoresponders can
benefit you in a number of ways, depending on how you like to operate
in business:
1. An autoresponder is ideal as an
email marketing tool as
it is capable of
providing important information to potential customers and sending a
followup email to them. For business people who need to regularly
update their
customers with new products or prices as they are released,
an autoresponder is ideal.
2. For businesses that provide technical
support, an autoresponder is a great help to automatically
acknowledge an email. It can inform
a client that you have received their
email and you will get back to them shortly. With this automated
response
from your end, clients are assured that their email has been received
and you will get back to them when you are available
to do so.
3. For publishers and authors
who offer ebooks, audio products and other digital
courses, an autoresponder can be used to deliver these electronically.
They can promote their products and offerings on their website
and visitors simply type in their name and email address and hit the GO
button. The product or item is then automatically
sent via email and arrives in the customer's email inbox.
Those who
sell courses or ebooks can initially provide a free sample and then
follow-up with another email after a few days to find out if the person
would like to pursue the course or not. This second email can even
ask the customer to sign up and pay for the course or ebook right
there, whilst they have the attention of the potential customer.
Another example where you can use an autoresponder is when you want
the people who register on your site to receive a f.ree
product, such as
an ebook or special report. You can link the autoresponder
with the online registration form. Then, for every person who
registers, a welcome email will be automatically sent to them,
containing details on how to download the product you'd like
to offer them.
Autoresponder Programs to use If
your business requires you to send many emails, consider the
merits of using autoresponders to automate the process. You even have a
choice between using either a f.ree or paid system.
Often, you can get a f.ree autoresponder
system as part of the package offered by
your web host. Setting this up is not
difficult and it usually just requires you to visit the control panel
of
your web host to activate the autoresponder. If you are not confident doing
this, just ask your web support person to do it for you.
Alternatively, you may like to utilise one of the available commercial
programs that specifically offer autoresponder functionality, such as www.savvywebmail.com
or www.savvywebcart.com.
We use both these systems at Savvy Web Women.

Five
Minutes with...
Sue
Papadoulis
of Home Biz Chicks
Question 1 What
has been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?
Before I
even started out with my first business, I let the fear of the unknown
stop me. I really wanted to get out of the 9 to 5 (or 7am 'til 6pm!)
corporate routine but the thought of having to deal with taxation,
insurance, licenses, BAS statements etc, prevent me from making the
move.
It took the birth of my first daughter and the desire not to put her
into daycare at an early age to finally push me into starting out on my
own. So, I began my first business when my daughter was just six months
old. Less than a year later I achieved a six figure turnover - and I
only wish I'd had the courage, and support from other women, to make
the leap into home business before I had children!
Question
2 If
you had to start your business again from scratch, what would you do
differently?
I
probably would have done a bit more research into what was required of
a membership web site. I started with a web designer and then ended up
letting her go because we weren't moving ahead fast enough. I then
signed up with another company and launched within six weeks.
Fortunately I didn't lose much money out of it, but it did delay
things. My recommendation to anyone starting out is to seek advice and
support from other business people in the same field, before you start.
Question
3 Who
do you admire and why?
I admire other women running their business from home and those who
support them. People like Lyndsey Baigent from Essentially for Women,
who's so open with telling her story about being in debt and having all
sorts of personal problems, and then being able to overcome the
challenges, rebuild her life, and is now helping others to do the same.
I admire anyone who's able to take massive action to completion -
people who don't just wish they could do something, but take the
necessary action to achieve it.
Question
4 It
takes a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in
business. What keeps you motivated?
I'm motivated by
the desire to live life
according to my dreams and goals, rather than working for someone else.
I love being at home and having that daily contact with my family which
wouldn't be possible if I worked in a job. The desire to never go back
to the corporate world is a major motivator. My husband also works from
home and we've built this incredible lifestyle that gives us the
flexibility to do what we want, when we want. If we have to go into the
city for a meeting, we're always desperate to get home and away from
the hectic pace and stress!
I'm also really motivated to help women realise they can be successful
working from home. I want women who've had children to know that there
are other options beyond putting your child into care and going back to
a job you don't enjoy. At the moment, I also have a big deadline which
motivates me to grow Home Biz Chicks - and that's the due date of my
second child in September!
Question
5 What
are your 3 biggest success tips?
- Do something you're passionate about and you will be
successful and satisfied on every level. Work isn't work when you do
something you love.
- Know your customers - know exactly what they want,
what they're looking for and what problems you can solve. Then simply
and effectively communicate the solutions you offer.
- Manage yourself, not your time. We each have 24 hours
in a day and some succeed while others don't. It comes down to
determining your specific business goals and then allocating time each
day to work on achieving your business goals. Don't get caught up
spending all your time working "in" the business leaving no time to
work "on" the business.
