Question
1 What
has been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge in business so far has been combining parenting
with being the primary and/or sole bread winner - especially
when a
sole parent. I have sought to overcome this challenge by frequently
assessing my energy levels, emotional and physical health and the
happiness of my children - making adjustments where necessary
to
improve quality of life. This can sometimes mean sacrificing income
for quality of life. This has also meant outsourcing as much of the day
to day work of business as much as possible and being realistic about
my workload.
Question
2 If
you had to start your business again from scratch, what would you do
differently?
Ensure
that I was more prepared for rapid growth from the outset,
and made sure that I had more help such as outsourcing with both my
business and home life. I realize now that I was spreading myself too
thinly for quite some time.
Question
3 Who
do you admire and why?
I admire so many people it would
be impossible to name them all,
such as the many teachers I have had along the way both in my
clinical practice and in business.Anita Roddick was a great
inspiration with her "Business as Unusual'
book and the whole 'Body Shop' philosophy. I really
admired her for
colouring outside the lines and redefining business in her own way,
which was obviously hugely successful for her. I also admire the
many spiritual leaders who have promoted the philosophy of
'peaceful
resolution' such as the Dalai Lama. Also my parents who
raised 5 free
thinking individuals and gave me life and hope.
Question
4 It
takes a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in business.
What keeps you motivated?
I am constantly motivated by the fact that I can work for myself andam
master of my own time - within reason given that I also have
children. I like to think that I am modelling for my children that
there
are more options available than traditional roles and that they too can
seek to live their passion. I am also motivated to keep doing the type
of work I do, as I am very concerned about the future of our planet
and feel that I am contributing to a cleaner, greener, healthier
future.
Question
5 What
are your 3 biggest success tips?
- Get help - early in your business in
whatever way
you can, outsource or
employ someone to do specific tasks/roles - and show appreciation for
your help! It is too easy to get caught up in day to day work and not
work
on building your business.
- Service, great service, excellent service. Seek to
give more than you
take and REALLY make your customers feel welcome. Being very sincere
about this is effective and extremely enjoyable. Your customers and
your
team will be positively affected by your passion and you will
contribute to a
better world.
-
Take time EACH DAY to nurture yourself with enjoyable hobbies,
exercise, meditation, good food and good company. As a health
practitioner I get to see what happens to people when this does not
become a priority. Of course some of you will say you don't
have time -
but really you don't have time NOT to.
