How to Use RSS Feeds

You may have seen the words RSS Feed many times on websites and blogs that you frequent, but exactly what is an RSS Feed?

What is RSS?

RSS refers to Really Simple Syndication which is actually a format that allows a publisher to get updated content on their website or blog with little effort. Sometimes, RSS is also known as Rich Site Summary. Feed formats used in updating web content include news headlines, blog posts, audio clips and videos.

RSS formats have been in existence since 1999 but its popularity soared during 2005 and 2006. Currently, there are many sites that offer a feed of their content through the RSS format.

Why use RSS?

No longer do you need to search for fresh content every day to provide information on your site. RSS is a lot more convenient because it allows you to utilise other people's information and feed it directly onto your website or blog. Gone is the need to rush writing articles or hire article writers. Just search for relevant articles from directories on the internet and RSS allows you to feed them directly to your website.

How to use RSS

Using RSS feeds is easy. You just have to add several lines of code on your web page or blog and your content will automatically be updated.

Usually you need a feed reader or news aggregator software to gain RSS feeds from different websites and display them on your own web pages. Feed readers come in a variety of platforms but there are also the web-based feed readers such as My Yahoo, Bloglines and Google Reader.

After obtaining your feed reader, the next step is to find sites that syndicate content and add the RSS feed to the list of feeds your reader keeps track of. This is done through subscription and usually by entering the feed's URL into the feed reader.

Another option is to simply click an RSS icon in a browser which automatically starts the subscription process. The main function of an RSS reader is to monitor the user's subscribed feeds for new content, downloads them and then provides a user interface to read the feeds.

Any publisher or author will greatly appreciate the benefits they can gain with using RSS feeds. By providing fresh and relevant content on a consistent basis, there's an increased possibility of attracting more visitors to your site. Additionally, search engine spiders will be prompted to index your web pages and will do so regularly, particularly as your site is updated frequently with fresh information.

Lynette Palmen of Women's Network Australia

Question 1
What has been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?

It's natural that the bigger an entrepreneurial enterprise becomes the more challenges it will face. With a unique and innovative concept like Women's Network Australia it's inevitable that others will attempt to copy and steal the firms Intellectual Property. They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, which it is, but preservation is the name of the game in business, so trademark everything that's not nailed down and engage a crack legal team to jump on offenders when issues are brought to your attention. It works for me - bring on the next challenge I say!

Question 2
If you had to start your business again from scratch, what would you do differently?

Like with having a baby there's never a good time to start a business. If you're driven by entrepreneurial passion you just need to jump in and make it happen. I started Women's Network Australia back in 1990 during the last economic crisis. I took absolutely no notice of what others were investing their fear into at the time and it proved an absolute blessing. If you can build a sustainable business that thrives during a financial famine imagine what is possible during the good times. We're now in another economic crisis so against the crowd sentiment I'm the entrepreneurial driver behind yet another new business venture. In my mind there's no better time, let everyone else cocoon and hide-away in fear doom and gloom.

Question 3
Who do you admire and why?

I enjoy being in the company of confident people, those who are willing to share and stand up for what they believe in, regardless of being judged or critized by others. I find these types of people interesting to spend time with. Because even if I don't agree with their opinion at least they have one - which in itself is a stimulating experience. I have always made a habit to looking at the direction the crowds are headed and if based on fear I just do the opposite.

Question 4
It takes a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in business.  What keeps you motivated?

Besides the fact that I enjoy my lifestyle ultimately it is not what business success is about. People often ask me how after nearly two decades my eyes still light up with excitement when talking about Women's Network Australia. You know for most people Friday is their favoured day of the week - but for me it's Monday, because that heralds a new working week and the opportunity to make some small difference in the lives of other women in business. And if you don't think that little things can make a difference try going to sleep with a mosquito in your bedroom.

Question 5
What are your 3 biggest success tips?

  1. Always take complete responsibility for the financial side of your business and do not pass the buck. Pay your own accounts and if you don't know or understand something make it your business to educate yourself and find out the answers. There is no room for ignorance or acting like a victim.
  2. Do what you do well and get in the professionals to cover off on the rest. Avoid the DIY trap it's for house renovations, not for business success. Find the money to engage the services of experts to help guide and grow your business.
  3. There's lots of great business ideas sitting on shelves that'll never see the light of day. Make it your business to get comfortable with the fact that concepts and products only represent 20% of what a business is about, it's the other 80% being the marketing and sales that will make or break a business. Unless you understand this concept and are prepared to take it on board don't bother starting a business.
