Wendy's
Week
This week I
joined some of Australia's leading entrepreneurs and business builders
to celebrate Anthill Magazine's Fifth Annual Cool Company
Awards.
I'm pictured with James Tuckerman, the Founder and Editor-In-Chief of Anthill Magazine.
Savvy Web Women received an Honourable Mention in the Micro Business
Category.
Over 700 Businesses entered the awards this year, with only 20
businesses receiving this honour. We are extremely proud of
this achievement.
Festive
Season ClosureThe
Savvy team will be taking a well earned break over the holidays.
The office will be closed from Friday 24th December 2010 and reopen on
Monday 10th January, 2011.
Until next
week,

The
Benefits of Having a Facebook Business Page
Nobody can deny that, right now, Facebook is the top social media site
being used by people across the globe. Statistics as of January 2010
reveal that Facebook has over 350 million active users and half of them
log on to their accounts in any given day. In fact, most people spend,
on average, 55 minutes a day using Facebook.
In terms of active pages, more than 700,000 businesses are currently on
Facebook and across these pages, there are more than 5 billion fans.
Mind boggling isn't it?

Question 1 What
has
been your biggest challenge in business and how did you overcome it?
Cash flow has probably been the biggest external challenge and we have
yet
to overcome it entirely but somehow we make it through every shipment.
At the
moment we have invested in a program to help us in this area.
My personal challenge has been self belief, am I capable of making a
business
work? To overcome this I have learnt to listen to the praise from
customer's
family and friends as it is always easier to believe the bad then than
the good.
We are all our own biggest critics and it doesn't always
service us to
be so hard
on ourselves.
Question
2 If
you
had to start your business again from scratch, what would you
do differently?
Obviously
knowing what I do now I wouldn't make the same mistakes but
really
mistakes and what we have learned from them has been why we are now
successful.
At different points in time I would have made different choices, for
example if I
had of know we were going to sell out of our entire seasons stock
within 2 weeks
of it arriving in Feb of this year, I would have not chosen to go back
to University
and both Matt and I would have given our notice to our previous
employers
sooner. Going back even further we wouldn't have tried to
start our
business and
renovate our house at the same time. 2 years living on concrete floors
is not fun!
Question
3 Who
do
you admire and why?
Right now I admire anyone who
goes into business for themselves. It's a tough
road to take and the stress can be very intense. There are rewards but
as Matt
said to me 2 months after he left his full time secure job,
"I've never
worked so
hard in my life", which was a big realization as he talked
about how
much easier
life would be when he didn't have to work for a boss.
Matt and I been trying to negotiate the idea of incorporating a baby
into the
mix. I truly
admire the women who run a business with children and even more so
those
who do it without a partner.
Question
4 It
takes
a lot of determination and dedication to succeed in business. What keeps
you motivated?
There has been hundreds of times that I have wanted to give up. Just
not get
out of bed, not answer that call and now we have moved the business out
of
our home the desire to just not open for a day can be very strong.
(Especially
with the morning sickness). The one thing that never fails to inspire
me to keep
moving ahead, to keep making the big decisions, to handle the endless
setbacks
are the hundreds of women who have emailed and called to tell Matt and
I how
happy they are that they can finally get a pair of boots that fit.
For years I have the same problem, feeling inadequate about my shape
because
the shoe industry wouldn't supply boots to fit real women.
Knowing in
my own
small way I have made someone smile or feel good about themselves is
what
gets me out the house in the morning.
Question
5 What
are
your 3 biggest success tips?
- Only start if you are willing to take it all the
way. In my experience with all
the setbacks and challenges you need a strong desire to make it work.
- Listen to your customers. I know its been said a
thousand times but that's
because it's the only way to know what they want.
- Don't be too hard on yourself. The fact
you got up
this morning and took
the chance to go for what you want makes you a success. Every minute
spent on making your dream a reality is a step closer to the results
you
want.
