What You Can Learn From My 
          Weekend Face Plant!



It was a lovely holiday week-end in Canada.  I live out in the country on an acreage, so I  was busy planting my garden, hanging out at the greenhouse and feeling very  Martha Stewart-ey.  
As I was sweeping the sidewalk I noticed my little black dog  preparing to chase someone/something on the road.   Her fur was all up and she was doing her I'm a big dog and I am going to eat you routine. (Note: She's not a big dog and she practically needs a cane)
I gasped and had visions of her getting run over - so I  dashed forward to stop her - she looked at me, saw me running - which in dog  language must mean ...
CHASE THAT INTRUDER! 

and she took off.
As she was sprinting at old lady speed- she cut across my  legs, I tripped on my stupid broom and did a total FACE PLANT in the driveway!
I hit my eyebrow, took a bunch of skin off my foot, and my entire  left side - OUCH!! I've got bruises that look like Italy, France and Minnesota  on my leg and ribs.
As I was lying there in the dirt, my little black dog ran  across the road and attempted to catch the DEER she had viewed at a distance.  And then she came panting back - feeling all  happy with herself.
I, on the other hand, was bleeding, picking stones from my  face and I confess -  
        my  FIRST THOUGHT was...
Oh S%$T! Did anyone see me do THAT??

Just the deer.
And then I started laughing as I couldn't believe what I had  just DONE TO MYSELF.  
Plus - I can't  imagine what I looked like when I wiped out -I'm talking full ass over tea  kettle image here!  And my favorite mode  of transportation (my broom) went flying too!
And so yes - your bruised and scraped up Sales Diva has some  advice for you.       

        What You Can Learn  From My Week-end Face Plant:

Have you had a face plant in your business recently?
Let me give you some  examples to prod your memory:

You  didn't get the deal you thought you were going to get
You tried something new and it bombed so bad you're still feeling  shell-shocked
Your cash  flow has become a trickle
That  expensive website? Yeah - it's not working.
You've had a customer criticize you and or your product/service
You  goofed BIG TIME and you don't how to dig yourself out of Embarrassment  Alley
And Fill-In-Blank ______________.
My spectacular trip-over-your-own-broom-and-skin-your body- act could have been AVOIDED:

Why did I chase the dog?  I gave her the wrong signal!
I rushed without  thinking
I stretched waaaaaay out and put myself off balance
I didn't drop my stupid broom
Cutting a dog off at the pass - oh boy - brilliance at its finest!
Listen - I know wipe-outs hurt.  And whether it has happened to you (if not -  just wait - as it will) - wipe-outs and face plants happen when you're  STRETCHING IN YOUR BUSINESS.  
You certainly don't get FACE PLANTS FROM  STANDING STILL!
So take a deep breath and GET UP.   Someday soon you'll laugh about this but in  the meantime, DO NOT LET IT DE-RAIL YOU.  
Being in business can rough you up  sometimes  - you can handle it.
Now get back out there!

The Secret of Making GREAT Dough... 



OK - I have a confession to make.
I love traveling to conferences all over the world (headed  to the UK next year!),  love meeting and  helping people - I'm one lucky girl.
But when I kick those stilettos off at home, I turn into  Domesticated Diva! (I know, I know, I can already see you laughing!)
I love to cook, decorate, make pickles - you name it.
One of my recent adventures was learning how to bake bread  from my father-in-law.
Bob is 78 years old, a former Canadian navy man, machinist  and he makes a killer martini.
He's also the creator of Bob's Bread.  Honestly   he could sell the stuff it is so incredible.
During a recent lesson, he showed me all the steps ( he uses  a bread machine just to do the messy mixing part) and I thought it was a cinch.
A week or so later - I thought.. 
I'm going to make Bob's Bread.

Everything went well until the bread dough rising part.
Didn't look like Bob's bread to me.  And even after I put it into the oven, my gut  was saying...
Something is WRONG

So I called Bob and said...
OK - do you have some secret  ingredient you FORGOT to tell me? 
        I  just made bread that is as solid as a rock!

We went through all the ingredients and then........big  pause.....Bob says...
I bet something is wrong with the yeast.  Take a look at the EXPIRY DATE.

I dashed to the cupboard and let out a scream...
Well this yeast flat-lined in  2010 Bob - no wonder the bread is a BRICK!
He laughed - I threw the bread to the crows and went to the  store to get FRESH YEAST.
And started over.
 
So What Does My Bread  Making Story Have To Do With YOU Making Better Dough?

Well - I bet you're doing loads of things right but you  still feel like you're struggling.
And as your bossy Sales Diva - you need to take a closer  look at what is NO LONGER FRESH in your business.
 
Because you've PASSED THE EXPIRY DATE. 
Sometimes, what at first glance looks really SMALL -  is in fact, one of the reasons you're not RISING TO THE LEVELS OF SUCCESS you  should be.
 
Which, by the way, means you're losing sales and don't even know it. 
Examples :

Has your Website  seen any new content/refresh lately?
How is the SEO/traffic for your website doing? Do you even know?
When was the last time you created new marketing materials?
Is your  picture updated?
Do you send out a newsletter each month?
Is your sales process the same as it was 5 years ago?

But for many solopreneurs - they hit a barrier. It's one of  the first ones.
And it's called The Six Figure Hurdle.  (Except it feels like a mountain!)
Maybe your sales creep close to six-figures and  thennnnn...they stop.
Or you do $100+K one year and then the next you're in the  $80K bracket again (or lower)
Or you've hit a plateau and NEVER seem to get over the hump!
But making LESS than  $100K doesn't give you:

Freedom.  You've had to pass up lots of opportunities  because of low cash reserves.
Flexibility.  You HAVE to sell something every week or  otherwise your heart starts pounding from the bills piling up.
Creativity. Creativity is one of the first things to  DRY UP when you're in a money crunch.
Peace of  Mind.  You're working too hard, lying awake at night and yet you feel like you're  spinning your wheels and getting nowhere.
Confidence.   Honestly. You feel like an imposter. A fake.   You're wondering about whether you should head back to your old, nasty  day job that you hated with all your heart.
When I broke the $100K  mark in personal income over 20 years ago I remember I did a dance of joy in  the parking lot!  (And to get $100K in  commissions I had to sell a hell-of-a-lot-more-than-$100K)

Are You Making Out 
          With Your Sales Mirror? 



I'm a city girl who also happens to love living in the country.
One of the major benefits for a nature loving, tree-hugger-wearing-stilettos  kind of chick like me is that I get to witness the thousands of birds arriving  in the spring.
One of my favorites is the robin.
A few weeks ago as I was writing an article for a national magazine,  I happened to look out my front office window.   A flutter of activity caught my eye.
One of our vehicles was parked in the front of the house and  a robin had landed on the passenger mirror.
Now here is where the fun begins!
The robin would sit on top of the mirror...peek over the side,  puff up its feathers, hop in front of the mirror and do a little love dance and  then pop back on top of the mirror.  And  it did it over, and over again.
Yes - Rocket Robin was making out with himself.  He thought he'd found the love of his life. 
And he did this for 3  days in a row.  To hear the rest of  the story and to see what happened to our fine-feathered friend - you'll have  to keep reading!
 
Are You Making Out  With Your Sales Mirror?
I may not be a scientist however I can guarantee one thing.
Rocket Robin wasn't going to woo the love of his life, build  a nest for 2, have a couple of kids and head south for the winter by making out  with a truck mirror.
He kept doing the same thing over and over and expecting  different results.
 
Where Is That Showing  Up For You?
Spring is a wonderful time for a REFRESH.
And I would bet you have a few little habits that are  driving you nuts except you can't seem to stop yourself from doing them.
Examples?
Ohhhhhh ...

checking your email 10,000 x a day vs selling  and marketing
doing one annual tradeshow that you never  follow-up on the leads
hanging out at the same, no-name networking  functions
using your boring sales and marketing materials  from 5 years ago
and so on, so on, so on, so on, so on, so on, so  on......
 
        Remember - if you want DIFFERENT RESULTS then you're going to have to break  free from your sales mirror and stir things up!
Otherwise, you'll be just like my little Rocket Robin  friend...the one who adored looking at his own reflection but who wasn't getting  any action.

After 3 days of watching in disbelief I couldn't stand it  any longer.  We actually had to put the  vehicles in the garage each morning to stop the crazy little bugger.
He hasn't been around lately...although I did see a robin  flirting with one of the garden balls....some birds never learn.
Make sure you're not one of them.
