,

Values. It is easy to say we have values when we surround ourselves with people who agree with us. However, when we go about our daily lives, welcome new people into our lives and keep our minds open to other ways of thinking, that is when the values we say we have are tested.

After all, it is much easier to be swayed by someone else's values when we've been told what we should believe and haven't truly come to know why we believe what we do. However, when you are confronted with situations that make you uncomfortable, explore the reason why. Explore, when you've had time to step away from the situation, why you felt uneasy. In time, it will become clear. Yet again, we need to trust ourselves, trust our instincts, but then be willing to do the work of understanding why we feel the way we do.

Recently, I was unexpectedly confronted with a situation that tested what I valued. My immediate response was one of discomfort and distress because I had an inkling I was the only one in the vicinity that felt similarly, but couldn't bring myself to be go along with the predominant system of beliefs. After assessing the situation the next day, I came to realize that while others may try to explain why such a situation was acceptable and attempt to belittle my reasoning, I needed to stand my ground. It was not easy . . . at all, as I lost someone's friendship I had come to care about, but I slept with a sound conscious that night knowing that I followed and adhered to what I valued.

While I am a strong proponent of keeping an open mind and listening to all sides of an issue, in order to be at peace with ourselves, we must know where we stand on issues that to bend would discredit our integrity or weaken the life we wish to live. We must know what we believe, and thus live by if we wish to respect ourselves and gain respect from others.

There is a catch. It's not easy, as I can attest to first-hand. Once you know what you most value, you will be tested, prodding, pushed and cleverly manipulated at times,. All attempts to try and sway you to go along with others. After all, it's easier when there is a flock that follows aimlessly behind and no one strays.

However, in order to live the life you wish to live, you must be free to make the decisions that will create such a life. In order to be free, you must have courage and courage begins by knowing what you value and being willing to stand by what you believe. As much as it often seems what we have control over is very little, there is actually so much we do have control over that we often forget about. Take a look at the below post from the archives to see what I mean:

Freedom: Create Your Own Legacy

In this week's newsletter, the most popular post of the week was one that stirred up many comments and thoughts from readers. I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and found it nice to know that so many people could relate and were clearly mislabeled indeed.

Also, Oscar de la Renta revealed his resort collection this week, so you will find a gallery of photos to peruse through if exquisite feminine fashions are your taste.

I have mentioned it quite a bit this week on the blog, but I am ecstatic about my work this past weekend which resulted in the down-sizing of my closet to far fewer items and much more clarity. There honestly was a feeling of relief knowing that I have a capsule wardrobe that I can wear, many things that will mix and match well, quality items that will last and some breathing room for my clothing budget. I talk a bit more about this in this week's Style Inspiration, and also offer a few go-to classic items to have in your closet this spring in Jenesequa's Mid-Week Motivation. In all sincerity, it is possible to love fashion, stay within your budget and always look chic. Two essential keys to making this work: knowing your signature style and purchasing quality items that will last.

In the states this weekend, Memorial Day weekend is here (and the unofficial start to summer), so I have a feeling many of you are heading out of town to enjoy a bit of a respite. I wish you safe travels, and regardless of how long your weekend is, no matter where you live, I hope you have a lovely weekend full of a few hugs here and there, a luscious glass of your favorite concoction and time to savor the people and activities that you love.

Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

Self-acceptance comes from meeting life's
challenges vigorously. Don't numb yourself to your trials and
difficulties, nor build mental walls to exclude pain from your life. You
will find peace not by trying to escape your problems, but by
confronting them courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in
 victory.

,

My first taste of sweet, luscious lemon meringue pie was the beginning of my life long love affair with pies and tarts. As a child my first concoction in the kitchen was learning how to make my own crust, and I can remember taking a picture, posing with my very own handmade lemon meringue masterpiece (well, at least to me it was).

Much like tasting something that you immediately fall head over heels in love with for the first time and are eternally smitten is the feeling when you are fortunate enough to have a taste of the life you desire to live. It may be visiting a new city that just speaks to you and you realize then and there that you will someday call it home. It could be interning in a particular field of studying and becoming mesmerized by the energy and captivated by the ambition, ultimately provoking you to choose a degree to pursue a similar job. Or maybe it is that first time you house sit in a home that requires you to take responsibiity, but at the same time revel in the comforts of a beautiful, welcoming sanctuary, thus prompting you to make a vow that someday, you too will own your own home.

Whatever it is that you taste and realize without a doubt that you want to incorporate it into your life, listen to this calling. Listen and then examine what it is that speaks to something inside of you instinctively because your life, as I've spoke about before, is speaking to you. Your life is trying to lead you to where and what you should be doing. Trust it. Investigate it. And then act upon it in some way.

Why Not . . . Get to Know Yourself?

In this week's newsletter, you will find a stunning sanctuary adorned with a subtle French touch, ideas on how to acquire the dreams that you seek, advice on how to gain real wisdom and even more ideas, updates and style inspiration.

With a busy week slowly winding down, I look back and am thankful for all that has happened. An opportunity to meet fellow writers and inspired, motivated professionals, time away visiting one of my favorite respites and moments to contemplate all that running around in my mind. If you're anything like me, my mind is constantly working, and even though at times it can frazzle me, I wouldn't want it any other way. After all, life is so fleeting, and it is up to each one of us to make the most of the time we have.

I wish you a lovely weekend doing what you most want to do. To my new subscribers, welcome to The Simply Luxurious Life newsletter. I want to thank you for choosing to spend a little time each week with even more ideas for how to create your own unique life that helps to bring more fulfillment and eliminate the unnecessary. And to my long-time and loyal subscribers and readers, as always, I am so very grateful for your support. Have a wonderful and restorative weekend everyone. Just like a dogged advocate who sticks up for the rights they believe in so ardently, or a leader who keeps their focus on what is best for their constituents, letting the criticisms sting less and less, so too should we stick up for ourselves and not succumb to personal attacks.

To have and maintain self-esteem isn't always an easy feat. There will be times when it is easier (when things are going well, and the people around us support us and accept us for who we are), and there will be times when its strength will be tested (others telling you that how you live or what you believe is wrong).

Knowing that the road will be both tranquil and rocky is fair warning because once we do respect ourselves, then we will certainly be tested. Whether it is a colleague who refuses to listen and entertain any of our suggestions, or a friend who is continually disregarding our needs or preferences, this is an opportunity to refuse to allow ourselves to be walked on.

Now I'm not suggesting that we have to act aggressively, but I am suggesting that we gather up some gumption and refuse to continue to passively agree in order to avoid upsetting someone.

As long as you approach the situation with tact and respect, it's okay to ruffle some feathers every once in awhile, and if they choose to ignore you or still disregard you, then you might want to consider different options that are available to deal with them more effectively or extract these people from your life all together.

10 Ways to Strengthen Self-Worth

As promised, the winner of the Nell Stephenson's new book Paleoista will be announced today. I want to thank all of my subscribers who entered, and please remember that you, as a subscriber to the newsletter, will always receive the first head's up on upcoming giveaways. I am happy to announce that Marie Fatil was the lucky winner! (Marie, simply email me your mailing address, and I will send the book straight away.) Congratulations!

In this week's newsletter, I finally am including a post I have been wanting to write for awhile now. Why Not . . . Live Alone for a While? elicited wonderful responses from readers, and I genuinely enjoyed hearing each shared experience regarding this issue. Also this week, was the annual red carpet event that has quickly become my favorite (shh, even just above the Oscars) -The MET Costume Gala. With fashion designers and their muses, the red carpet was full of gorgeous and intriguing ensembles honoring Elsa Schiaparelli along with Miuccia Prada.

I don't know about you, but I am adoring the longer evenings and warm temperatures. The past few evenings have found me lounging in my Adirondack chair on the lawn with my dogs at my feet begging to play fetch, and either reading material or a glass of wine in my hand as I slowly melt into the evening after a long days at work.

May the weekend be good to you and gentle in its handling, and be sure to always keep in mind that you are worth being accepted for exactly as you are and wish to someday be. Keep designing your masterpiece. You're getting closer.

Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

,

As I was leaving work yesterday, an ominous thunder cloud hovered above and quickly, and unrelentingly, let its rain fall free and fast upon us pedestrians who were sent scurrying to find our vehicles or the nearest place of refuge. However, within ten minutes, the sun was shining on the glimmering pavement that had not too long ago been doused with moisture.

Such a common scene is witnessed during the throes of spring's fickleness, but it made me ponder how quickly the status of our outlook and the lives we live can change, similar to that of spring showers and subsequent sunshine.

I don't know about you, but I am constantly reflecting, analyzing and planning how to improve, elevate and learn. There are times when it seems that there isn't an answer in sight, but just as quickly as the downpour began and ended, so too could be the search for answers in our lives. The key to making sure this quick turnaround has a chance to occur is to never stop looking.

One of readers' favorite posts was written more than two years ago which demonstrated that as long as we keep looking, and at the same time listen very carefully, what we are looking for will eventually be found. Have a look . . .

Are You Listening?

This week's newsletter includes a post about my current fashion obsession - pencil skirts, reasons to live an offensive life, opposed to a defensive, and a book review that caused me to rethink how I ate. With lively discussion around the book review, be sure to take a look and see if you would like to try and win your very own copy.

Open exclusively to The Simply Luxurious Life newsletter subscribers, I have a copy of Nell Stephenson's just released debut book Paleoista to giveaway to a lucky newsletter subscriber. To enter to win, simply email me at giveaway@thesimplyluxuriouslife.com no later than Sunday, May 6th. Make sure the email address you are using is the same one that receives the newsletter, as you must be a current subscriber to win. (The winner will be announced in next week's newsletter.)

With a few touch-ups around the yard calling my name, windows that are needing a good wash and the opening weekend of our local Farmers' Market, I am especially looking forward to this first weekend of May.

So many of you have told me that you enjoy reading the newsletter in the morning as you sit down to enjoy your steaming cup of java or tea, and as you savor this simple ritual, I hope you are well and realize how much I appreciate your patronage. It is my hope that May be a beautiful and promising month for you.

Whether you are picking up some fresh peonies to place in your home, hitting the road for a bit of wine-tasting or looking forward to savoring your uniquely designed weekend, I wish you a wonderful time. Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

If there was ever a season that caused me to become twitterpated, it would be spring. With the lush green grass that doesn't beg to be watered, magenta, blush and white blossoms that flirt with the passersby and showers that sing me to sleep and often wake me in the morning, I find myself wishing that spring occurred throughout all twelve months of the year.

As much as I dream that this magical scene could continue to present itself each day, I am aware that it may not be as relished if it occurred constantly. Just as when wonderful, exuberant moments and good news we've been hoping and wishing for finally arrive, it is because we've had to wait for it that makes it much sweeter and far more appreciated.

The waiting process is not easy, but it does allow each of us time to make the most of the moments in between, to not squander these opportunities and to use such time to help create whatever it is we are hoping for, fine tuning, learning and applying the new knowledge we receive.

The good news is that every day there is something to learn - about ourselves, about life, and about others. So as a way to encourage us all to always choose to learn the lesson when it seems those not so wonderful days are occurring far too often, here is a post from the archives:

Choose to Learn the Lesson

This week Monday's post quickly became the readers' favorite. Based on the comments and emails I received, it became evident that with all of the images, people and choices that are bombarding our lives, it takes great discipline to not get sucked into the jealousy trap. However, when you master this emotion, your life will become much more serene, as you will begin to only focus and stress about things that are truly significant and meaningful in your life. Click here to read How to Turn Jealousy into a Positive.

With some decor ideas inspired by my love for anything French, unique ways to add classic, yet whimsy touches to your wardrobe, as well as ways to become your own decorator as you go about creating your unique sanctuary, the past week on the blog has had a bit of everything.

Already the last weekend in April is upon us, and savoring spring is something that is probably on nearly everyone's list (fall for my Aussie readers!). I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Perhaps a sip or two of wine, a taste of something decadent and of course, a few moments to let loose and just be. Whatever you crave, have a lovely time. Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

,

I've recently fallen in love with cashmere v-neck cardigans. While I'm not sure how long this love affair will last (my previous flings in the past twenty years have included empire waists, overalls - I was in college, please forgive me, and ripped jeans), based on my past, I'd like this current love interest to go the distance as it seems more about genuine style rather than trying to make a statement, but then I began to think about the latter half of that assumption. Doesn't anything we choose to wear to make a statement? Aren't we communicating to the world each moment we step outside whether it be in flats, stilettos, boots or in our flip flops?

So the bigger question is, why do you choose to wear the clothes you wear? Jennifer L. Scott brought up this question in her book Lessons from Madame Chic which begged me to ask this question as well, why not wear what we love and what flatters us? While there will always be some boundaries to remain between with regards to work, quite frankly, instead of hiding behind our clothes, why not choose clothes that present the authentic foundation of our best selves so that we as the individual can shine and share what we have to offer.

Our world is initially attracted by what it sees, and so often the first impression is what sticks in someone's mind; however, an amazing first impression will only carry you so far. Why not pack the one-two punch? Look appropriately groomed and stylishly dressed for the occasion that shares a hint of your personality and then let your fabulous personality, intelligence and conversation skills seal the deal? In other words, keep in mind the importance of dressing well and you will be one step closer to success, appreciation for what you truly have to offer and who knows what else.

And while v-neck cardigans may have my attention right now, dresses will always have a large section of my closet. Here are some reasons why you might want to consider wearing more dresses as a way to communicate your best self:

Why Not . . . Wear a Dress?

In this week's newsletter, the theme seems to be about keeping it simple, while remaining chic and stylish whether it be with regards to the clothes we wear or the life we lead. In this week's newsletter, the reader's favorite post grew out of a book I just finished and couldn't recommend more; however, it is also a book that due to popular demand was taken off the shelves by its most recent publisher and will only be available in November, but trust me, it is a book you will want to add to your wishlist or hint at for an early Christmas gift.

Also, I have a feeling many of you may take on more than your fair share and in doing so revert to the approach of multi-tasking to get everything done. Be sure to read Wednesday's post where I share reasons to consider eliminating this skill from your repertoire. I too had to wean myself, but I've learned, in the long run, my life is better off without it.

For anyone who needs a bit of motivation in the middle of the week, stop on by Jenesequa's website on Wednesday where you'll find a short Mid-Week Motivation post I have begun to write each week. This week's topic was all about sharing too much, and why revealing less really is more (click here to read). Any for anyone with an iPhone, you can now read Jenesequa's
monthly style magazine via their new free app - click here to download and read the new April issue.

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for a weekend. I'm dreaming of a Friday evening with wine and cheese waiting for me as I tuck the evening into bed, perhaps some play time in my yard after visiting some of my favorite nurseries and limitless leisure time to read and read some more. How about you? Is the weekend calling your name? I hope the past week has gone well, and remember, stop every once in awhile, take a deep breath and realize this thing . . . your life . . . is your masterpiece, what will you create?

Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

The therapeutic powers of journal writing are often forgotten when the world around us seems to be clipping along at a frantic pace. The initial thought may be to dismiss this exercise as unnecessary especially when time is of the essence; however, in the past few weeks I have been reminded of this habit that I sorely need to make myself dive into, especially during moments of emotional turmoil or stress.

The act of putting pen to paper is a healthy way to vent, to sort through your thoughts and make sense of what exactly it is you are feeling and more importantly what caused you to feel this way.

By taking a time-out to pull out our journals, we don't jump to conclusions, we help eliminate the possibility of blowing things out of proportion and saying things we may not truly want to say outside of hearing it in our own heads.

If this is something you've been wanting to try, but are having a hard time incorporating in your daily routine (and it doesn't necessarily need to be daily, but as a relief during times of stress and questioning), turn it into a simply luxurious ritual. Buy a beautiful journal. Purchase a pen that begs to be used. Pour yourself a cup of tea and sit in your favorite spot when you're able to find some time to yourself. Before you know it, you'll be longing for this time, and I have a feeling you'll also be noticing many positive results in your mind, with your emotions and in your day-to-day routine.

Why Not . . . Gather the Essentials for Life?

This past week the post that seemed to garner the most attention from readers was one that I think so many of us find ourselves struggling with. The good news is that striving to be a perfectionist comes from good intentions, but if we aren't careful, it can destroy what we've worked so hard to strive for. If you too consider yourself to be a bit of a perfectionist, have a look at this Monday's Inspirational post.

It is indeed spring here in the Pacific Northwest, and as I was working out in the yard last weekend I was again reminded why I love spring so much. With the tree blossoms, new blooms, many reasons to stop by the local nurseries and pick out my favorite herbs, vegetables and additional perennials, I love this seasonal ceremony of playing dress-up with my yard. Yes, I am comparing working in my yard to fashion, but in all honesty, making the world that surrounds us more beautiful is a treat and a privilege. No matter how little your yard or window box is, dive in and add some color. Not only will you appreciate it, but Mother Nature will be sure to be whispering a silent thank you as well.

I do hope you enjoy your weekend whether it involves much needed time with friends, your significant other or children, or maybe you just need some time alone. Have fun as you let go of your worries and stresses for a weekend, carve some time out for journal writing and lap up all that spring is letting us enjoy (yes, even the rain). Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

Life is full of moments, people and situations that are out of our control. However, the things we do have control over are our perceptions, beliefs, assumptions, expectations and feelings, as I was reminded after being introduced to Deepak Chopra's most recent book.

Mastering these five things instead of letting them master us takes a conscious and constant effort on each of our parts, and I will honestly admit, I am still a work in progress. However, I think when we realize that we often create moments that we believe our insurmountable, instead of adjusting our perceptions, our feelings, our expectations or our assumptions, we would come to realize that the solution is within our grasp, and we would be able to flow with what occurs in our lives instead of constantly forging against it, thus reducing our stress and anxiety and increasing our happiness and joy for life.

Based on past experiences, we can quickly jump to a particular conclusion and assume the worst, but if we remember and trust our decision making that has put us into this present moment, we must trust ourselves, we must look for our purpose for being placed in such a situation and rise to the occasion to make the most of it, instead of freezing and making the situation worse than it already is.

Such a mind shift is not easy, but the more each of us practices it, the more it will become a habit and the more happiness and contentment we will welcome into our lives.

12 Ways to Learn the Lesson

This week's newsletter is full of what you've come to expect - a wrap-up of the past week on the blog, extra articles found from around the web that I thought you might enjoy, a peek at new additions to my Pinterest boards and Tumblr blog, as well as some window shopping. I know there seems to have been a lot of minor tweaking in the past month, and with any change, while exciting, can be confusing. However, the changes are more in tune with what living a simply luxurious life is all about, welcoming in a quality living environment, but at the same time keeping it as simple as possible so as to provide a more fulfilling experience for the individual living their life.

I hope this newsletter finds you well, and if you are celebrating Easter this weekend, may it be a beautiful gathering and celebration. If you are simply looking forward to a weekend off, do enjoy yourself, relax, make your favorite meal or special treat, spend time with those who lift you up and bring you comfort and then simple revel in such lovely, simple moments.

Have a wonderful weekend, and until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

,

The spring season is here with flirty florals, playful pleats and cropped pants to make us eager to step outside and display our new finds.

One of the things I love about spring wardrobe shopping is that each piece doesn't have to be extremely expensive, and therefore, you can have fun with trends that you may only wear one season. This year neon, fringe and art deco had their fun on the catwalks, but I wouldn't necessarily splurge on a purchase for any one of these trends.

On the other side however, there are a handful of items that are worth investing in as they will carry you from year to year and some from season to season (the pencil skirt for example). Cropped pants are back in a big way which is wonderful because they are flattering on nearly all body types. Pair with a light cashmere sweater or a silk blouse, don some flats or elevated sandals and you will in no time look classically chic each spring.

I've pulled together a list of items found on the spring runways that are worth investing in, as I am confident they can be worn each year if properly taken care of, and I've also created a playful list to consider if you want to introduce a few of the season's trends into your closet.

Remember to always stick to your signature style, honestly assess what you need in your closet before going shopping and then let yourself have fun shopping, dreaming and being a model for a day. After all, we all deserve to feel beautiful because each of us is - uniquely so.

Enjoy the season~

,

The power of finding time to unwind is something that does so much good for our psyche, relationships, mood and creative process.

While knowing this life-truth and practicing it can sometimes be two different things, if we each make a regular appointment with ourselves to say no to obligations, refuse to multi-task when we take this time for ourselves and respect ourselves enough to realize it is okay to put ourselves first for an hour, an afternoon or even a weekend on a regular basis, I believe we would all be amazed at the improvement our overall lives would undergo.

Not only would we, as individuals, feel better, but we would also be in a better frame of mind when spending time with those we love and those we work with. And for anyone who works in a creative field or is trying to come up with unique ideas for decor, outfits, a child's birthday party, or sweet nothings for their partner, having the ability to think creativity will soar when we take time to just relax and unwind on a regular basis.

Sounds absurd initially, but by letting our minds temper their speed and come to a neutral place of no stress and silenced stimulation, our minds begin to restore themselves, much like our bodies restore themselves during sleep.

I wanted to include the following post from the archives because I feel it fits well with this notion of taking time to ourselves. Sometimes it is hard for people to be comfortable with their own company, but speaking as someone who while introverted had to transition into becoming comfortable with myself when no one else was around, I've discovered it's the best gift we can give ourselves that only asks of each of us the necessity of time. Time to put ourselves first, time to respect who we uniquely are and time to be with our thoughts, hopes and dreams without interference or persuasion from the outside.

Why Not . . . Revel in Solitude?

Many of you will be happy to hear that I have heard your request to bring the weekly Cups of Tea post back. What I've decided to do is post regularly on Tuesday a post I have titled This and That. This and That will be where I share favorite blog posts from fellow bloggers, shopping finds I can't wait to share, recipes that appear too scrumptious not to make immediately and other lovely discoveries I come across throughout the week that I want to share with you. Below you will find the inaugural post of This and That: No. 1. I do hope you enjoy, and if you have any suggestions for items or writers I should check out, please let me know.

A common comment from many of you who subscribe to The Simply Luxurious Life weekly newsletter is that you enjoy reading it as you sip your favorite cup of tea or coffee whether it be Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to hear that reading the newsletter has become a simple luxury in your lives. So I must confess. When I sit down to put together each week's newsletter, it has become a ritual that I too greatly look forward to each week.

On Thursday, with ideas in tow, I make a special trip each week to my favorite French patisserie, order myself a tea or mocha and inhabit a table for a handful of hours. The length of time is of no importance as it has become part of my weekly routine and hearing that you enjoy what is created each week means the world. I want to thank you so very much for your time, subscription and continual support.

The exciting news I spoke of nearly a monthly ago is still rolling in the right direction and as soon as I can tell you more, I will. I absolutely cannot wait.

Until then, April is nearly here. Where did March go? And if you are living in a similar climate, the grass is getting greener, trees are beginning to blossom and spring truly seems to be in the air. I don't know about you, but I absolutely love this time of year, and one of this week's posts deals with just exactly how to welcome and prep for spring. Have a look here.

Before I forget, the winner of the $100 gift certificate at Shopbop is . . . Tiara Gentry. Congratulations Tiara, and thank you for everyone who entered. It is my hope to have similar giveaways in the future, and as I mentioned before, those of you who are subscribers to the newsletter will always receive a heads up before anything is announced on the blog.

Have a wonderful weekend, be sure to carve out some time to unwind, and until next week, I'll see you on the blog.
