"Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant."

ugust. While it is the last full month of summer, it also brings with it the longing for the slowing of lazy days and leisure before the schedules and endless expectations increase almost in the blink of an eye.  Historically, it also tends to be a bit of a tumultuous month for one reason or another, and we find ourselves in a similar situation this week economically; however, while such times can be stressful and life changing, I tend to look to Horace's quote (stated upper right-hand corner) and trust that people are capable of rising to the occasion in creative ways when the need arises.

Now that doesn't me everyone else rises to the occasion.  It means looking to ourselves for the answers and being willing to do what we may not have initially thought was within our capabilities.

Often we are lulled into a state of mind that is complacent whether it be in our personal lives, our communities or our world that we can just do as we've always done and everything else will remain blissful indefinitely. While this may be a nice fantasy, in reality, in order to create and maintain the life we wish to live in or enjoy at the present time, we must always be active, conscious and appreciative.

Even if you specifically are not affected by the stressful times that our economy and world are experiencing at the moment, use it as a wake up call to get your hands dirty, understand how your life can be more secure and bring an even more calming peace of mind.  Why wait until a catastrophe or an unexpected event occurs to shake you to the reality you must deal with?

Today, look at your finances. Are you living within your means? How can you become even more financially sound? (Click here for a variety of articles to help you financially get and stay on track.) Now, take a step back, possibly just stop for a few moments and ask yourself the tough questions you may have been avoiding - what am I doing in my life that doesn't work? Why doesn't it work? How am I responsible for this hiccup and what can I do to change it for the better? And if you still aren't sure, take some more time. Such significant answers don't come just because you are looking for them, but they will come if you continue to look for them.

This week on the blog, I have been posting while traveling as I've been on a work trip coupled with some play while in Portland. I had the fortunate opportunity to review a restaurant I've been curious to dine at as it has just reopened after being remodeled. If you're a French foodie and pass through or live in Portland, have a look at my review for the new Brasserie Montmartre.

With much time to contemplate, think and ponder as I took my morning walks along the Tom McCall Waterfront Park, I answered the question that was running around in my mind after watching Woody Allen's new film Midnight in Paris - read my thoughts in this week's Inspirational Post - What is Worth the Risk?

All in all, this time away from home was exactly what it needed to be, a time to reflect, a time to appreciate and a time to soak in new experiences, people and ideas. All certain to keep me inspired for quite some time.

, I hope you too have had some time this summer to get away from your regular routine, to reflect and appreciate how far you've come, pat yourself on the back for what you've done so far and gear up for what lays in front of you awaiting to be accomplished. Life is full of amazing opportunities, some are unexpected, some take focused, determined effort, but all are possible if you keep within you a positive, yet realistic attitude. Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

Style Suggestion

With blazers and jackets seen out and about, I was inspired this week to pull together an outfit that still evoked the feeling of summer, but was perfect for a night out when the temperatures drop ever so slightly. Each of these pieces are versatile for other outfit options, but work quite well together.
