Sadly, there are moments in our lives that cause us to stop, reflect, and remember all that is going well at the present moment even when we may have become conditioned to focus on what we lack.  Fortunately, these said opportunities allow us to shift our perspective or ensure that we are focusing on what is truly important, what will truly make a positive difference and what would allow us, upon reflection, to be proud of.

As I contemplated how to discuss the tragic events this week with my students, I choose to focus on how we can move forward. The simple act of kindness in our every day ventures can be the conscious difference that adds a bit more hope, much needed sincerity and the desired quality versus quantity of human to human contact I believe we all seek.

Now kindness can come in a variety of forms. Sometimes kindness may on the surface appear rather abrasive if we are trying to be honest with those we love. And on the flip side, syrupy sweet, empty words can be passively quite hurtful upon reflection. It is the intention that should guide what we do. If we seek to help, to comfort, to add value, how we express the kindness we desire will find a way so long as we keep looking for an outlet to share our efforts with the world.

Thankfully there were bright moments in Monday's dark events with the endless small and unexpected acts of kindness that occurred by strangers toward their fellow fallen neighbor.

While there can never be enough kindness, there is already an overflowing amount of it in this world, and that is inspiring in and of itself.

Here is a post from the archives you might enjoy:

In this week's newsletter, spring trends were on my mind. Two in particular and spotlighting classic ideas in novel, creative ways. From the graphic and floral print pencil skirts to bold, creative stripes, designers offer endless ways to embrace spring trends, but also adhere to a classic signature style.

On the entertainment side of things, Baz Luhrman's film The Great Gatsby is finally about to be revealed, and Anna Wintour is in full swing promotion mode for her friend as Carey Mulligan was chosen as Vogue's May cover girl. Have a look at my post on the film, the soundtrack and the designers behind the roaring 20s style.

With an inkling to search and explore this weekend, I will be popping into wine shops, boutiques and anything else that catches my eye while I poke around Portland. I hope you too have plans that you are looking forward to as well during these upcoming few days. Be well and until next week, I will see you on the blog.

Splurge & Save Outfit:

No. 3

As I mentioned on this week's This & That, pencil skirts are aplenty this season from designers with a wide range of graphic prints and designs. And as bold black and white stripes are also widely available (click here to see the many different ways to wear them), why not mix the two?

In this week's Splurge Outfit, Marc Jacob's vertical pencil skirt makes a bold statement, but as it also plays the role of a classic choice, the beautiful Catherine Maladrino silk print blouse works well with the basic black and white. Add a long gold necklace from Oscar de la Renta and basic black ankle strap sandals from Alexander Wang, and an outfit for work or evening is ready to reveal your clever melding of seasonal trends with your signature style.

Wanting to save, but still exude effortless style? Choose J.Crew's simple solid silk blouse and wear it with Asos' horizontal striped below-the-knee pencil. With the right mixture of subtle and bold, each piece can easily work with many other items in your closet.
