LA Marathon - Are You Ready? Check Out Our 10 Preparation Tips Below
  1. Pick Up Your Bib at the Expo.

There is no bib pick-up on race day. So, you have to get to the Expo on Friday or Saturday and pick-up your bib, t-shirt, and goodie bag. There is a lot to see and do at the Expo, so plan on spending at least an hour. We will not meet this Saturday.

The Expo opens at 10 AM on Friday. It will be least crowded in the the early afternoon on Friday, more crowded in the evening. It will be VERY crowded on Saturday. Parking is free at Dodger Stadium. Maybe I see you there.

Expo Hours: Friday 10 AM to 7 PM - Saturday 9 AM to 6 PM
2. Have a Pre-Race Plan

How are you getting to the start of the race?

CARS can only enter the Stadium on race day through the Stadium Way entrance off the 5 freeway. We recommend getting there by 5:30 AM. Find a way to stay dry and maybe keep the shoes you are running in dry until you start running. If you are parking at Dodger Stadium keep warm in your car.

SHUTTLE BUSES only will be entering the Stadium from the 110 freeway -- but if you're coming from the south, that could be your route, so be aware of traffic. THINK about how you're going to keep warm amd dry after your shuttle drops you off.
3. Lay Out All Your Gear the Night Before

This includes your breakfast and pre-race snack (if any). Have everything you're going to eat ready to go the night before. Use our Race Day Checklist to make sure you've got all the gear. I'll be laying out three piles of gear, my running gear, my rain and keep warm gear, and a drop bag with warm clothes for after the race, inside a plastic bag. I don't know if it is going to rain but I will have everything laid out and ready to go no matter what the conditons are and I'll bring what I need.
4. Meet at Parking Lot L at 6:15 AM for Body Looseners

Plan on being there by 5:45 AM. It will be dark. Think about bringing a flash light. We will do Body Looseners at 6:15 AM at Parking Lot L except if it is pouring rain. If so stay dry and we will hopefully see each other at the starting corrals.
5. Wear Warm Throw-Away Clothes

Wear warm clothes to the race. You need to stay warm an dry before the race. You can throw them away once the race starts or out on the course. (The Marathon people collect the discarded clothing and donate to local charities.)
6. Porta Potties

I've written about the PRP. If you have porta potties phobia, get over it. There will be lots of porta potties - but the lines will be probably be long. There will be lots of porta potties along the route, but there will be LONG lines in the first 3-5 miles, at least. Try and plan that part of your morning. See you in line.
7. Where Will Your Friends be Mid-Race?

If family or friends are going to be someplace along the route to cheer you on, know about where they will be. Decide on which side of the road to look for them on. Have an idea of the time they should expect you. Knowing they are there will help your spirits as you run. You might give them a special drink or snack to hold for you. They can always join us at the Sole Runners Holistic Aid Station just past Mile 18.
8. Sole Runners Holistic Aide Station - Just past Mile 18

Look for the Sole Runners Holistic Aide Station just after Mile 18. Feel free to drop by for food, drink, a Kool and Fit spray down, motivational quote, to warm up, anything.
9. Pack for the Post-Race

You will probably want to gear check your stuff or give it to friends meeting you in Santa Monica, especially if it rain. First of all get warm after the race. Pack any recovery food and drink in a small cooler. Be prepared for the worst and expect the best.

  10. Have a Post-Race Plan

How are you getting home? I hope I am not on a bike. Where will you meet? If you're not driving yourself, make specific plans with your family or friends who are picking you up. Last year it was just about getting out of the rain. Post-Race plans were very important.
Have a great race!

On January 1, 2006, Coach Gary and I took SoCalRunning.com officially on line. Now with Gary in Malaysia, SoCalRunning.com content is completely up to me. In 2012, I plan on increasing my postings, which means, more videos and content. I have been working with great people, trying out many differnent running products, and learning more about the body, feet and shoes. I have been running new races and traveling for a couple of marathons. I have a busy race schedule in 2012. I will be doing my first 50 miler in April, the American River 50. 2012 should be a great year for running and SoCalRunning.com.
