Starting Over

"As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler."
-Henry David Thoreau

Fall. More than it just being one of the most beautiful seasons in New England where I live, it always signals a time for me of shift and new beginnings... an invitation to show up, regroup, renew.

But you don't need to wait until "school starts" or even New Year's, to hit the refresh button in your life. You can start over right now, right this second.

The beautiful poem-prayer by Belleruth Naparstek might help you remember how:

Prayer

Just give me this:
A rinsing out, a cleansing free
Of all my smaller strivings
So that I can be the class act God intended,
True to my purpose,
All my energy aligned behind my deepest intention.

And just this:
A quieting down,
A clearing away of internal ruckus,
So I can hear the huge stillness in my heart,
And feel
How I pulse with all creation,
Part and parcel of Your great singing ocean.

And this too:
A willingness to notice and forgive
the myriad times I fall short,
Forgetting who I really am,
What I really belong to.

So I can start over,
Fresh and clean,
Like sweet sheets billowing in the summer sun,
My heart pierced with gratitude.

-By Belleruth Naparstek, 1997, Prayers for Healing: 365 Blessings, Poems, and Meditations from Around the World. Maggie Oman, Editor. Conari Press, Berkeley, CA, Reissued 2008.

Happy new beginnings, everyone!

Stephanie

  (Clean) Windows to the Soul

Guess which window was the first to get cleaned after an embarrassingly long period of time (read: years)...?

It might come as a shock to you all, but yes, I still find things that need clearing and I'm always amazed by the ah-ha moments that come out of even the simplest efforts.

A quick glance up and through the (now clean) skylight is all it takes for me to be jolted wide awake by the large Birch tree that drapes over it (and me) right now. The tree has always been there, holding a regal space in our side yard. But until this moment I haven't been able to recognize and appreciate its dazzling beauty.

Next time you feel stuck, or can't seem to see your way through to a solution, or could use a new start in life, go get the Windex! What's it feel like before and after?

You may be amazed by how much more of the world will come into focus - both from the outside and within.

Your Spacious Self - Workshop Testimonials

Your Spacious Self by Stephanie Bennett VogtI love hearing stories about how this clearing work moves in peoples' lives, especially after a workshop. Here's a small sampling of comments I received from participants a few days following my recent program at the Kripalu Center [in no particular order]:

  • "I felt so euphoric when I got home - a sort of 'I CAN do it.' I did a few baby step clearings and had a great expansive practice - spacious if you will... Now I know what you mean by picking up a paper clip -- once I started it was not difficult and I went through half of the piled up 'for filing' accumulation."
  • "THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I've seen my sister twice and I've been able to remain 'detached' in a way that I have never been able to do in the past. That is a huge difference."
  • "That final day [of the workshop] seemed to shift the stuckness for me. I finally feel like my self again, after several months of adjusting (to retirement). Talk about off-loading a lifetime of work!
  • "My initial walk-through the house [when I got home] resulted in a minor change at the front door. It is done and the space is much lighter and more conscious. Took all of two minutes."
  • "...Act of sweeping got my clearing juices flowing like Pavlov's dog. Very impressive. Like priming the pump...
  • "I have been feeling really good."
  • "I frolicked aimlessly with my dog, without feeling I should have been doing something else. (NEW feeling)."
  • "I have moved everything over [to my new apartment] and I'm starting to find homes for the stuff I love. I will give myself 6 weeks at the longest to get everything sorted between what I need and what goes into storage."
  • "For a real neat freak I have a lot of hidden "nests" of stuff that I can easily say goodbye to. It may take months...but no problem!

  One-Minute Clearing

What's in your wallet (purse, coat-pocket, back seat of your car...)?

I gave a talk recently and asked everyone in the audience to empty their purses and bags right then and there. Lots of surprise discoveries came out of this clearing exercise. Among them...

  • 8 lipsticks
  • 14 pens (in one); 12 pens in another
  • a bagful of store receipts

You can probably guess the rest... not exactly what one would call treasures.

So here's my invitation: Take your purse, wallet, coat pocket (or whatever is immediately available) and empty the contents on a clear floor or desktop. Keep your focus just on this pile (not all the other stuff you see from the corner of your eye that is making you groan or recoil).

Take 5 - 10 minutes to group the contents into four piles: Stay, Go, Throw, Don't Know (Learn more)

How did it go? What "treasures," or ah-has, did you discover? Click here to share your comments. We'd love to hear from you!

Personal Clearing Returns to the Women's Well

Personal clearing is a simple, safe, and gentle technique that uses pendulum dowsing to identify and release stress patterns we carry. Clearing at such deep levels is like a spiritual "spa treatment" which can result in one feeling less burdened, peaceful, and clear.
