Hi there --
This is just a quick note to let you know of potential Passport problem if you are planning on traveling overseas in the upcoming months.
Living here outside of Washington, DC, I have a lot of friends who work for the government. Right now, Congress is trying to balance a budget and a government shutdown seems almost eminent according to several friends who work in different departments and agencies. They also feel that this will be longer and impact more services than the last two in 1995 and 1996.
So what?
One of the services that will be impacted during a shutdown is the US Passport Office. The last shutdown resulted in over 200,000 people missing their trips because a Passport could not be issued in time.
While I can't say with certainty that there will be a shutdown or know precisely how long it will take to process a Passport if there is a shutdown, but based on the past, I would expect at least an 8-12 week delay.
If you are traveling out of the country before July, I would suggest investing the additional dollars to use an expediting service to get your Passport.
This is just a quick heads up to help offset any potential problems at the pass!
All the best,
John W. Frenaye, Jr

PS--Some people have asked me about the requirements for Passports in general. If you are flying out of the US, you will need a passport. If you are cruising in the Caribbean, you MAY not need one, but the cruise line is the ultimate arbiter. If you are cruising anywhere outside of the Caribbean, you will need a Passport. If you are driving across the Canadian or Mexican border, a Passport is acceptable as is the new Passport Card. And remember, travel documents are ultimately your responsibility and failure to obtain the right ones will typically NOT be covered under any insurance policies. If you are confused, just ask, we can set you straight!
