SUSTAINABILITY
A word we hear so often, but why does it matter?
The food you put on your plate can dramatically impact your health and the health of the environment. By choosing a sustainable food source you make a difference. You create a catalyst for change. You empower and are empowered through the choice that is sustainable food.
5 SIMPLE STEPS TO
SUSTAINABILITY
1. Reduce Food Waste
40% of food produced in America is never eaten. Most of the waste occurs on the consumer level. The good news is, that means each of us can make a difference on the amount of food waste!
- "Shop your pantry" before going back to the grocery store. What do you already have on hand that you can use?
- Meal Plan so that you have a purpose for each item in stock.
- Have a weekly "cleanup" day to consume leftovers...and reduce the amount of cooking on your part :).
2. Avoid Overeating
This is probably the most serious sustainability issue of all, because producing food to be consumed in excess of the calories we need wastes resources. America produces far more calories in our food supply than we need for daily subsistence.
- Drink more water
- Go for a walk instead of eating
- Grab a stick of your favorite chewing gum!
3. Reduce Food Packaging
By consuming foods with little or no packages you make healthier decisions and less of an impact on the environment.
- Instead of a bag of chips, snack on a cucumber or a banana.
- Instead of a boxed and bagged breakfast cereal eat an avocado on toast.
- Instead of ice cream for desert have a spoon full of locally sourced honey.
4. Buy Locally
Not only does consumption of local goods help your friends and neighbors, it encourages sustainable practices in your local community and it will help your health by eating fresher food without as many preservatives.
- Drink milk from a local dairy
- Find others growing plants that you aren't able to raise
- Support school greenhouses in your area
5. Grow Your Own
Aquaponics is a great way to have locally sourced food where you are the farmer. This way you can be empowered with the knowledge of the process your food has undergone.Your food will be of the highest quality with the best taste and you can determine which foods you would like to have available to you year-round.
