Dusting
Off Life's Little Clutter
“The
ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary
so that the necessary may speak.” ~ Hans
Hofmann
I have always
been somewhat annoyed by my coffeemaker.
Actually, I don’t have anything personal
against my current device, but a frustration with coffeemakers in
general. My past
seven coffeemakers have worn out
within eighteen months, and each had its own unique quirk. With the majority, no
matter what carafe,
pot, pitcher, funnel, or liquid tool I used to fill the system, I would
end up
with water all over the counter.
I also like to
grind my beans fresh. Again,
no matter my method, my counters would
be littered with coffee grounds as I sought a fresh brew; sometimes the
grounds
even ended up in my cup.
On a completely
different note, I also have a scissor dilemma.
No matter how many pairs I buy, as soon as I
need a pair, they have disappeared.
I
won’t even go into my challenges of socks and how these perfectly happy
couples
emerge from the dryer solo.
What do my
coffeemaker, socks, and scissors have in
common? All three
are tolerances. While
not earth-shattering problems, each is
a complication in the day; a complication I can accept instead of solve. I do not fall into a
depression when
encountering these obstacles, but they do frustrate me.
Instead of providing peace, each time I see
the seeping water, I shake my head and reach for a rag.
Each of us has
our own tolerances. Tolerances
make up the list we “will get to”
someday when there is time. Yet
if we
face a certain tolerance often, then today is the day to think about
removing
this stressor and simplicity stealer from your life.
Here are a few
examples of tolerances:
- No garbage can in the laundry room
for lint
- Junk mail
- No napkins/clean up supplies/garbage
can in the car
- Running out of AA batteries
- Running out of essential supplies
such as milk
- Socks that don't match
- Too many plastic bags
- Pieces and parts to "something"
- Items to give away that haven't been
- Missing scissors, tape, staplers
- Tangled Christmas lights
- Clothes that don't fit or look good
- Wobbly chairs and tables
- Expired warranties
- Junk drawers
- Too many clothes hangars
- Drawers which don't close
- Storage containers without lids
- Expired coupons
- Stacks of old magazines we don't read
- Cosmetic products that are outdated,
or don't match, or don't work
This is
just a small list of the many things that complicate our lives today. Solving just one tolerance
once and for all
rejuvenates and simplifies our world.
TAKE A STEP
FORWARD
Tolerances
take up a lot of time and energy, but resolving them is often a quick
process. Generate
your own list of life
tolerances in your journal. Choose
five
items from this list and brainstorm ways to resolve them. Make a plan to resolve at
least one of these
tolerances today!
