   Answer below.

This past weekend I was at the second Millionaire Chess Open in Las Vegas.

This tournament is a really amazing event.

Here are some of my favorite memories:
  • Brian Wall got asked by a ridiculously beautiful woman from Iran if he wanted to be her mixed doubles partner.   (They gave special prizes to a man/woman team with the most combined points in the tournament). But one of her friends objected, and so that whole thing lasted about 2 minutes.  lol
  • They had a professional photographer there, David Llada, who took a ton of pictures of her.  He said he almost dropped his camera when she smiled at him.  You can follow him on twitter at https://twitter.com/lladini  (the above photos are by him)
  • They had a "confession booth" which was a lot of fun.  The idea is that players can go into the booth during the game, and talk about what they are thinking about.  They then showed player's "confessions" during the broadcast.  Here is a picture of me in the confession booth.
  • Brian Wall became a "confession booth junkie", and by the end of the tournament was going into the confession booth about 10 times per game.
  • I was talking to my mom during one of the rounds after my game was done, and told her that she should tune into the online broadcast to see what it is like.  Right after she tuned in, they showed one of Brian Wall's confessions where he was going on a rant about something he calls the "mother in law" opening.  My mom said "He seems like a NUT!" and couldn't follow one word of his babbling.  lol
  • Brian and I did a podcast during the event, which you can listen to here: http://tacticstime.com/tournaments/millionaire-open-mc2-chess-podcast/
  • I have lots of other fun memories, and stories, which I will include in a "part 2" email.

Answer: Brian calls this the "fork trick" 15...Nxe4! wins a pawn after either 16.Nxe6 d5 or 16.Rxe4 d5 forking the queen and second piece, winning back the material.

Black sometimes uses this idea in the opening to get open lines for his pieces, but here it wins a pawn as well.

   Happy Tactics!
