   Greetings from Phoenix Arizona!

I flew in Wednesday night from Denver for the U.S. Open, which is being held at the BEAUTIFUL Arizona Biltmore Hotel.  http://www.arizonabiltmore.com/

I can't say enough about how beautiful this place is.  There is a wikipedia page for the hotel with some fun facts and history as well - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_Biltmore_Hotel

I am playing in the four day section, so I had 4 games yesterday, and 3 games today.  All of the sections merge tonight.  There is also a 6 day schedule, and a 9 day schedule, where you only play one game per day.

The tournament is just one big open section.  So the pairings, especially in the early rounds can be lopsided.  I got paired against International Master Mark Ginsburg (rating 2404), in round 1.  That was cool - I have never got to play an IM in a rated game before that!  (He kicked my butt!)

My chess coach Joel Johnson is here.  So it has been nice getting to chat with him in person.  Joel is always on the lookout for "book games".  These are games that are in consideration to go into one of his books (Formation Attacks series, Attacking 101 series, etc).

Joel is quite picky about what constitutes a "book game".  Basically it has to be a short game, with some kind of very efficient attack.  When I played this game in round 4, when it was over I thought "book game!"  Playing a Joel "book game" is a real honor :-)

So after I played this game, I emailed it to Joel with the subject "book game", and no other comments.  Joel wrote back, "I could not agree with you more - awesome!!!! game - the game will be in Attacking 101: Volume #002."

   So that was cool!

You can follow all of the results, see pairings, etc here:  http://www.uschess.org/results/15/usopen/

Some games are being broadcast at http://monroi.com as well.

Answer20...Nxf2!! wins a pawn, attacks the queen, and threatens mate in one.  If White takes the Knight, 21. Kxf2 or moves the queen, he gets mated with 21...Rxg2#.  There is no way to stop the mate, and save the queen at the same time.

   Happy Tactics!

  Tim
