   Answer below.

Congratulations to Fred Spell on winning the "Best Electronic State Newsletter" from the Chess Journalists of America in their 2016 CJA awards!

Fred has been the editor of the Colorado Chess Informant, the official state magazine of the Colorado State Chess Association (CSCA) for many years now.

He does a really outstanding job.

Fred has a really good eye for design, and does a really amazing job with his use of colors, fonts, and layout.  Everything he touches is very beautiful and professional looking.

I was the editor of the magazine in 2004 and 2005 and it is a lot of hard work.  It was a really good experience though, and that was when I first created "Tactics Time".  The issues I did look like psychotic ransom letters compared to the art that Fred creates!

Former CSCA President Paul Covington deserves a lot of credit as well, because he was the one that lobbied the CJA to create a category for electronic magazines.  Previously their awards were mostly focused on paper based media.  Kudos to Paul!

   Congrats again Fred!

   Answer:

   8. Nxe5! wins a valuable pawn, and sets up a Légal Mate style trap.  If Black takes the Queen with 8...Bxd1 he gets mated after 9. Bxf7+ Ke7 10. Nf5#

   Playing 8. Bxf7+ first also wins a pawn, after 8...Kxf7 9.Nxe5+ Kg8 10.Nxg4

The computer likes playing Nxe5 slightly better than Bxf7, but both give White a nice advantage.

This is a tactical pattern you absolutely have to know inside and out.  I even see very strong and experienced players miss it in their games.

   Happy Tactics!
