Easy like Sunday Morning

Happy Sunday, --

Here is a position that was featured in Mark Donlan's excellent "Step by Step Tactics" column on chesscafe.com the other day, that I really liked, and has a lot of practical value.

Who wants to be a chess millionaire?
This week Grandmaster Maurice Ashley announced his new Millionaire Chess Open tournament!

It will be held in Las Vegas next October, and sounds very exciting!  The entry fees are large, but so are the prizes.  I attended the HB Global Challenge about 10 years ago in Minnesota, which Maurice was also involved with, and it was a very well run tournament.

What do you think about this event?

24 Hours of Chess? Surely, you can't be serious?
I have been helping "chess mom" and active tournament player Shirley Herman organize a 24 Hour Chess "Insanity" tournament, which will be held at her house December 28-29.  It will be 20 games, with 10 rounds where you play each opponent with white and black.  It should be a lot of fun, and I am looking forward to it!

11...Qb6 is a nice double attack on the loose bishop on b4, and threatens mate on f2.  White cannot meet both threats, and will lose a piece.
