The Craft

  • Grading 'Short Beach', Part 1 - This is a great post from Colorist Warren Eagles about a 3-week color grade that happened over the course of a few months. He shares some great insights about managing clients, presenting yourself to the client and remembering your role in the process. Good stuff Warren! (iColorist.com)
  • Tao of Color Blog Series: Color Grading 101 - Week 3 continued over on SpliceVine.com. This past week I tackled the workflow for building a solid foundation for your image. And then started talking about secondaries. This week I'll be wrapping with a podcast - if you have questions related to color grading, reply to this email by end of day Tuesday and I'll answer them on the podcast. (SpliceVine.com)
  • The Psychology of Color - Steve Hullfish shares his collection of links about colors and color preferences. There's some great stuff in there. Worth a bookmark. (ProVideoCoalition.com)
  • Humanae: Skin Tone Variations - This is a great Tumblr blog that's assigning Pantone colors to skin tones. And there's a huge variety of skin tones. Also a great reminder why our job isn't to give everyone the same looking skin tones... Although I do wonder if you mapped these Hollywood and Television A-List actors if you'd find this much variety? (humanae.tumblr.com via Jim Wicks)
  • Variations On A Theme - Alexis Van Hurkman's observations about that Humanae tumblr blog. (VanHurkman.com)
  • Humanae, A Chromatic Inventory of Complexions - Yet another colorist inspired by that tumblr blog who has posted his thoughts - delving into scopes and color charts as well. (NegativeSpaces.com)
  • [Video] How To Match and Balance Multiple Cameras - I found this video while researching my blog series at SpliceVine.com. It's a great demo of how camera shaders balance cameras. Even better - one the best explanations of the Tektronix Double-Diamond display (and how to read it for camera matching) that I've EVER seen. (YouTube.com)
  • Color Palettes: Daniel E. Greene - I am fascinated by how painters arrange their paints on palettes. There are all sorts of techniques and theory on this subject. Here's a post about how one painter arranges his palette based on 'value strings' (tonality or grayscale). He pre-mixes over five dozen colors before painting. Cool to look at and an interesting read. (Underpainting.blogspot.com)
  • On-Set Workflow for 'Maniac' - How one DIT evaluated the project's requirements, selected his equipment and managed the on-set DIT duties of data wrangling. Good read. (ThePostLab.com via @IAmColorist)

The Tools

  • Avid Releases DS 11 - Now supports Avid Artist Color and Transport surfaces, additional codecs, and more... (StudioDaily.com)
  • Lustre Color Management - "Anyone who is doing digital color on the set would be interested in the info regarding 3D cube formats and monitor calibration as it's not necessarily specific to Autodesk software." (NegativeSpaces.com)
  • Make the Connection with ConnectFX in Smoke 2013 - How read and use Smoke's new ConnectFX feature. (PremiumBeat.com via @BKMeditor)
  • [Review] Adobe SpeedGrade CS6 - MacWorld takes a look at Adobe's new color grading app. (MacWorld.com)
  • [Spanish] Adobe Speedgrade CS6: Trucos y consejos I - On Google Chrome I translated this blog post to English. In the comments is a discussion comparing Resolve 9 to SpeedGrade CS 6. Some interesting thoughts in there. (MiguelCobo.com via @monica_camba)
  • [Forum] Free FCPx RGB Color Balance Plug-in - This is cool: Someone reads my initial 2011 review of color grading in FCPx and makes note of my complaint that there's no RGB Balance type plug-in. So he goes ahead, builds it, and offers it for download. For free. Nice. (FCP.co)
  • [Video] Baselight for Avid Overview, Part 1 - Only seven views? There gotta be more people interested in this than THAT! Also check out Part 2. (YouTube.com)
  • [For Rent] DaVinci Resolve Panels - In a Pelican case. Ships in the USA. (RedUser.net)
  • [Forum] Monitor Recommendations - A really good thread in LiftGammaGain.com about selecting a monitor. (LiftGammaGain.com)
  • 'Dark Energy' for Adobe After Effects - A noise reduction and grain simulation plug-in. Windows only. (DarkEnergyForAdobe.com via Ross Hamil)
  • [Review] The Big Mean Folder Machine - It's an app from the peeps who gave us 'A Better Finder Renamer'. (SpliceVine.com)
  • [Round-Up] New Plug-ins for 2012 - For all the major NLEs and a few grading apps. Some of these filters deal with color and grain. (DigitalFilms.wordpress.com)

The Business

  • NBC Subscription Model Erodes Olympics Values - The Brits aren't the only ones having a tough time gearing up for the Olympics. NBC has a pretty confusing way to watch the Olympics on the 'second screen'. And if you're away from home and trying to live-stream, it gets even tougher (with iDevices being shut out thanks to reliance on Flash). (ReelSEO.com)
  • The Mega-Epic Pissing Contest - I've read this pontificating post of Eberts' three times. My conclusion: the only one who I see peeing is Ebert. I really can't figure out what he's railing against - other than, maybe, higher ticket prices. But his voice carries weight and his comments about audiences not caring about visual quality gave me pause. (Blogs.SunTimes.com)
  • 4D Movie Theaters with Smell-O-Vision - What's the nose'y version of a colorist? Odiferous'ist? (BetaBeat.com)
  • How Does the Film Industry Actually Make Money? - A really interesting look at the crazy economics of investing $250 million into making a film and why the industry is still dominated by the Studio system. (NYTimes.com)
  • [Review] Geekbench - Scores the performance of your machine for easier comparison between rigs. (SpliceVine.com)

  • Calibrating Your Viewfinder or LCD - When you're out in the field. (XDCam-User.com)

Sunday Fun(nies)

  • NFL: Vegas Updated Odds - It's Sunday. And... no football (I'm talking the *real* football, where they hit each on purpose, they rest winded players and stuff :-) While we wait out the summer for opening kick-off,  here are recent odds on your favorite team winning the Super Bowl in 2013. San Fran is 4:1 while Indianapolis is 150:1. (theJetsBlog.com)
  • Could the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Fly? - If there's a Tao Colorist that can handle the Homework assignment at the end of this post... what the heck are you doing in this field??? (Wired.com)
  • [Video] Tutorial: The Edit Button - New open-source editing software that only has one button. Dead simple to use. (YouTube.com)

Weekend Warriors

  • Don't Buy a Jumbo LCD, Buy A Projector Instead - A post that includes prices, measures light output and takes practical considerations into account. Really interesting reading for any home theater entusiast. (Reviews.cnet.com)
  • Estimate How Much Propane is Left In Your Tank - Using a glass of water. So you don't run out in the middle of a BBQ. (LifeHacker.com)
  • Hidden Pools - These pools un-hide on command. I like! (YouTube.com

Gear Heads

  • [Review] Wacom Intuos 5 - In a few months I'll do my own review, as this is the first tablet I've owned in a decade. I agree with the points in this article. After about 6 weeks I'm just starting to see some benefits of muscle memory - precisely hitting dialog boxes without needing to see the mouse drag across the screen. (DefinitionMagazine.com)
  • [Review] Raidage Gage - A review of a 4-bay trayless enclosure for easy access to bare SCSI drives. S-weet. (lfhd.net)
  • 2012 MacBook Pro vs 2010 MacPro - Isn't it silly this comparison even needs to be made? Thanks Apple! If you're trying to figure out if you can ditch your tower for a modern laptop then read this. (BareFeats.com via Notes On Video)
  • REDMAG SSD Price Drop - A few issues ago I shared an article talking about the massive price drop in SSDs. The RED folks are passing this along. (NoFilmSchool.com)
  • [First Look] New Thuderbolt Drobos - New features include support for SSDs. Still - these are probably best used for near-line backup storage. (ArsTechnica.com)

Cross-Dressing

  • How To Build a Computer from Scratch, Lesson 3 - The parts have been selected. Now it's time to actually build the computer. (LifeHacker.com)
  • Apple's 2012 Laptops: How They Help Hackintosh Builders - The new laptops introduced some new CPU and GPU support in the Mac OS that opens up build opportunities. (TonyMacX86.com)
  • How to Move from Windows to Linux - Do you want to drive 10 GPUs for that super-charged DaVinci Resolve system? Then you gotta make the move. (ArsTechnica.com)
  • Hackintosh for DaVinci Resolve System - You won't find this build in the official DaVinci Resolve Configuration Guide (probably because Hackintosh's are in a gray legal area). But here's a thread from someone trying to build one - and the advice he was given. As always on this topic, Caveat Emptor. (TonyMacX86.com)

Career

  • I Am Adam Savage and This Is How I Work - Great productivity tips in here. Especially on email. (LifeHacker.com)
