Farm Market Tips
Cash is King Most market vendors do not take checks, credit or debit. Plan ahead and bring cash.
Containers and Shopping Bags Consider bringing reusable shopping bags, totes or baskets for bringing home all of your market finds. A cooler with ice packs is a good idea if you don't plan on going home right away.
Go Early For Best Selection Especially on a hot summer day, hitting the market when it opens will ensure best selection, as well as a comfortable experience. I've found that some vendors are sold out of popular items - such as fresh berries - if I go too late.
Try Something New Farm markets are notorious for their expansive selection of fresh, local products, many of which cannot be found at large supermarkets. Some "foreign" items you can expect to find include kohlrabi, garlic scapes, and countless varieties of tomatoes and other items. Each visit, make it a point to pick up one item you've never tried - you may discover a new favorite fruit or vegetable!
Ask Questions If you see something you are unfamiliar with, don't hesitate to ask questions. Vendors love to share their knowledge, cooking tips and recipes.
Purchasing Etiquette Farmers markets are not flea markets, and haggling is not part of the etiquette. Sometimes very late in the day farmers will offer discounts, but generally expect to pay set prices. |
