This Mama Cooks! On a Diet

Super Bowl edition

Are you ready for some football?
Now's the time to prepare for a healthy Super Bowl party.

Strategies

It's all in the planning. Here are some tips to keep the weight off during those bowl games!

Before the big game:
  • Exercise before heading out to the party.
  • Have a good breakfast that morning so you won't be starving (and tempted to over indulge) that afternoon.
  • Call ahead and ask your host or hostess what they're serving. Offering to bring some lighter fare like a veggie tray, or vegetable soup.
  • Found out if they'll be serving diet sodas or light beer. If not, bring your own.
If you're throwing the party:
  • Serve some healthy choices that you know everyone will eat - like chili, a shrimp platter, or  hummus dip and veggie sticks.
  • Have a "create your own sandwich" platter filled with healthy choices like lean meats and low fat cheese slices. Use an air popper to make some oil free popcorn to nosh on, too.
During the game:
  • Challenge your fellow party goers. Every time your least favorite team scores a touch down, do 20 push ups.
  • Make sure your water bottle is close by. Have a sip every time a pass or a first down is completed.
  • Make good choices - look for lean proteins like grilled fish or chicken. Soups and chilis are filling - but watch out for hidden cream and cheese.
  • Come late to the party. Tell your hostess you need to catch up on some work projects or household chores, but will be over after half time.
  • Stand up during the commercials and stretch. Sometimes you don't realize your full until you get up from the table or couch.
The next day:
  •  Even if you splurged a little, get back on track with your healthy eating and exercise plan.
