"Compassion does not render people tearful idlers, moral weaklings, or passive onlookers but individuals who will take on the pain of others, even when given the chance to skip out on such difficult action or in anonymous conditions.
~ Dacher Keltner
Sounds like compassion leads us toward caring and courageous actions. Compassion is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. Compassion may appear soft but it's soft like water is soft. And we know how water can wear down the hardest of rocks.
Keltner, who is a psychology professor and founder and faculty director of the Greater Good Science Center goes on to say:
"The
kindness, sacrifice, and jen that make up healthy communities are rooted in a bundle of nerves that has been producing caretaking behavior for over 100 million years of mammalian evolution.”
The capacity for compassion is built into us. When we cultivate it in ourselves and our children, when we experience it and use it, we create healthy communities.
Yesterday, we applied love to all that hurts. Let's continue that today and add compassion to our
thoughts and actions.
Let's also envision all of Earth's communities and countries becoming compassionate, healthy and strong by practicing humanity's highest ideals, wisely.
With faith and hope,
Charlene
