"Most of us don't realize the difference we could make." ~ Jane Goodall.
Remember the fictional story about the young girl tossing beached starfish into the ocean? According to the tale, thousands of starfish were stranded above the high tide line. An adult strolling along the shore sees the girl stooping and tossing one starfish, then another. He tells her the situation is hopeless. She can't really make a difference. So
why bother? Undaunted, the young girl stoops for another starfish and replies, "It makes a difference for that one."
It's a great touchstone for reminding ourselves that we can make a difference.
And now we've got the touchstone example of Greta Thunberg, the young girl who, for a time, stood alone outside of the Swedish parliament to demonstrate her concern about climate change. Her singular action played a part in creating a world-wide call for action to address the threat to our planet. Three days ago, an estimated four million people rallied in nearly 185 countries.
When I saw the masses of young people marching peacefully while passionately demanding that world leaders act to protect the future, my hope seemed to expand in four million directions.
Greta said: "I want to walk the talk, and to practice as I preach. So that is what I'm trying to do...If I know something and if I decide to do something, then I go all in."
Let's be like Greta and "go all in" each in our own way.
With strength, hope, and courage,
Charlene
