"There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope."
~ Bernard Williams
Even in the land of the midnight sun, where - in winter - dawn comes later than in many other
locations, the sun does rise. It sets sooner too.
Likewise, we may sometimes feel in the darkness longer than we would like. During such times, we can practice gentle self-acceptance and exercise faith.
Hope will rise. Light will follow. There will be beauty to recognize and new
understands to value.
Sometime today, bring light to the world in some way, large or small. Perhaps light a candle, or smile even if at first your facial muscles resist, or practice an act of kindness.
For now,
recall a time when you appreciated a particular dawn.
The memory that popped up for me just now was sitting on the porch steps of our century-old farmhouse in Jamestown, NY - where we lived for 20 years - with a coffee cup in hand. That porch side faced east. Next to a corner of the porch stood a massive oak tree that had been planted when the
house was built. Seeing the beginning of the sun's glow warmed my heart. The tree reminded me that seasons come and go and through them all we keep on growing. The coffee tasted good. And hope stirred.
Wishing you renewed wonder,
Charlene
