Professional Tour Management Training

Congratulations to all of you that have had, will have and passed interviews for 2013!  I wish you all the best.  I know how exciting it is when the tour operators start calling.

Here are my suggests for preparing for your interview (s).

Tour Operators:

Review procedures in your notes and or the "Tour Director Training Guide", especially timeline in Lesson 12.

Review what to do if there is a challenge and or a medical emergency.   Tour operators will often give you a situation and ask how you would handle it.  Don't act surprised or overwhelmed.  Remember its our job security.   If everything always worked perfectly, they wouldn't need is.

Review the briefing.  It will help you to review procedures and some will ask what you would you would cover.  It's a great way to see if you really understand our careers.

Have your example of narration ready. Some will ask for an example of what you would cover.

Conventions, Meetings and Incentives:

Review Lesson 9 including procedures and terminology.

Student Tours:

Review Lesson 2 and particularly Liz Moran's section on Student Tours.

Always have your ten reasons to hire you ready.  It will answer a lot of questions like, "...why should we hire you....why will you make a good tour director....why do you want to be a tour director....tell me about yourself....."

I know interviews can be tense.   If you're prepared in advance it will make it easier, help avoid "brain freeze" and less thoughts afterwards of, "I should have said...."

All the best and keep me posted.

I'm often asked about medical benefits which are extremely important.  Coverage depends on the company, type of employer and how often you work.  For example, most of the major tour operators do include medical benefits for their full -time Tour Directors/Managers.   The full-time requirements may vary with 26 weeks of travel a year being typical.  The tour operators may, as in most industries, require a waiting period to qualify.  Most will want to see if you're a success before putting you on their policies.

You may also receive benefits when working in the CMI industry.  (Conventions, Meetings and Incentives)  The major incentive houses offer benefits to their regular full-time Travel Staff and Trip Directors.  The DMC's (destination management companies) are less likely to offer benefits to their Tour Directors/Guides since most of their staff works part-time.

If you work in their office full-time most do offer full benefits.  You  may be in reservations, account executives, program managers and etc.

I always make sure I have personal coverage that includes international travel.  Some will offer coverage but will normally include a lower percentage.  For example, a policy in the US that covers 80% may only cover 50% when traveling internationally.  (International charges for medical care and prescriptions are usually less than in the US.) If you're not sure of the coverage, you may want to talk to your insurance company.

Hi Cherie,

I hope this finds you well! I just wanted to thank you again for your wonderful course, and your continuing support. Not only did I get interviews with 3 companies right off the bat after completing "Professional Tour Management Training" several years ago, but I landed a job with a company who I've escorted tours with for the last 7 seasons, and have worked locally in destination management since then as well.

When I recently decided I would like to get something a little more "full time" and sent out résumés, the response was very fast! I have 2 upcoming interviews with major tour companies, one at the corporate headquarters! Your training really did prepare me with the skills I needed to enter the exciting world of Tour Management, and your continued support and generosity with your time and expertise has been invaluable. Thank you again (and again) for all you do! Cherie ROCKS!

Sincerely,

Robin R

Cherie Anderson's course, Professional Tour Management Training, has changed my life! The tools she provides will help get you noticed and in the door. I Landed my first job soon after I graduated. Such a small investment in her wonderful class has yielded such big results. I now work full-time as a professional tour director and port lecturer for a cruise line. I am seeing the world and am loving every minute of it.

Hello Cherie,

I hope this email finds you in good health and in good spirits. I wanted to let you know how helpful your course has been for me. I paid attention to your advice and was very persistent and followed through using your methods.

I am now working in San Diego for 4 DMC's as a guide/field staff and as a tour director for a motor coach tour operator guiding day trips in So. Cal and into Baja. I will do my first 7 day motor coach tour in May! I am still guiding my own wine tours in Baja for Carnival.

Anyway, thanks again for your wisdom and excellent instruction.

The impending generational shift is important for associations, whose members and leaders have been Baby Boomers, according to Lisa Simon, NTA president.

"As Boomers phase out of the workplace, associations will rely on Gen X and Gen Y," said Simon. "And because young professionals engage differently, the NTA board knows it's important to understand their needs in order to meet their expectations."

The Millennials session, held Monday during a board meeting in Lancaster, Pa., included a focus-group discussion and a presentation from board member Cathleen Johnson of Edelman, a global public relations firm whose research on Millennials has powerful implications for the travel and tourism industry, including the following:

o    Millenials travel in groups but don't think of it as "group travel"; they're simply seeking shared experiences.

o    Their travel is focused on how they will change the world; good works is a way of life for Millennials.

o    Sustainability is not merely important to Millennials-it's necessary.

"One of the most enlightening points is that Millennials like traveling in groups and they expect value for their investment," said Simon. "That means they want two of the most common and important ingredients that packaged travel has to offer: camaraderie and value."
