Introduce Gratitude into Your Life

Hi ,

It looks like Autumn has well and truly arrived.  I have to say as much I dislike the rain, I do love seeing the beautiful leaves on the trees turning all shades of red, brown, yellow and golden.  It nearly makes the rain worthwhile!  Autumn symbolises things that once were and the possibilty of new growth and beginnings.  So , where in your life would you like to have new growth and beginnings?

This months newsletter is all about gratitude.  This is something that we can easily introduced into our lives and it can facilitate us on our journey of new growth and beginnings.  You can use the techniques below whenever you feel like you have 'hit a brick wall'.  They can help you gain a new perspective.

Just for Today, Live the Attitude of Gratitude

This is one of the 5 Reiki Principles written by Dr Mikao Usui.  This principle is asking us to practice gratitude as part of our daily lives.  When you learn the art of being grateful, you will find that it becomes an important part of your daily routine.  At the foundation of these five principles is the words 'Just for Today' where we are reminded to focus our attention on the present.  We can start each day with a blank canvas leaving behind the excuses, guilt and blame relating to events in our past.  We can focus our attention on our present actions which in turn will help shape our future.

At present, if you turn on the TV, listen to the news or even have a conversation you cannot escape but see or hear the word 'recession'.  How quickly everyone has forgotten about the 'Celtic Tiger'!   More than ever I have noticed that people are focusing more and more on lack - especially lack of money.  However, this poverty consciousness will only create more lack for you and by focusing and feeding on the negativity you are not giving prosperity a chance to enter your life.

Poverty consciousness is not directly related to the amount of money you have.  Rather, it's the relationship to that money or to material possessions.  If you worry about not having enough money, you're in poverty consciousness. If you believe there is not enough for everyone in the world, you operate from poverty consciousness.  However, poverty consciousness is like any behaviour you have adopted - you have the ability within yourself to change it.

By focusing on and being thankful for what you do have, you are reprogramming your mind and body to see all the great things that are in your life.  There are so many things that you can be grateful for even in the current circumstances.  , think of all the simple things in your life that you take for granted e.g. your health, home, family, money and healthy body.  These are things which we have got used to having in our lives but it is not until something happens that we realise how lucky we were.  So let's be thankful for what we have 'Just for today'.

When you practice and speak of gratitude, it begins to spread - others begin to think of what they are also grateful for.  When you are grateful for your blessings and say thank you, you are opening your heart and mind to being positive and receptive.  Without gratitude, people focus on what is wrong in their life - they think about what they don't have, or can't do etc...

However, as we can be grateful for what does goes right during our day, we can also be thankful for those things that don't go right for us.  Everything that happens in our life is a learning opportunity.  We can look at situations that have annoyed or caused us pain during the day and look for what this situation has taught us.  We can focus on the supermarket queue that isn't moving fast enough, the traffic that seems to be moving slower than ever, the slow waiter/waitress or all the lights you meet turning red.  You can choose to be frustrated and angry at these events or you can see them for what they are - an opportunity to let your mind be quiet and show gratitude for what you do have.

, stop what you are doing now for a few minutes.  Look around you - what are you grateful for at this precise moment?  Is it the heat of your house, a roof over your heat, a computer that functions well, the sun shine, your job that gives you a pay cheque, your health, the blue sky, the rain, laughing with a friend and anything else?  See how easy it is to be grateful?  How did it make you feel to think of all the good things currently in your life? You can do that while sitting in traffic or queuing in the shop or anywhere - I think you'll agree it's a much better way to spend your time rather than wasting your energy getting frustrated!

Below are two simple exericise you can use to get your gratitude flowing!

Exercise 1 - Bringing Gratitude into Your Life

At the end of each day write down at least 10 things you are grateful for in a note book or a Gratitude Diary.  You can write down whatever you are thankful for at that moment e.g. I am grateful for my health, my job, my car, my family, my friends, the food on my table, my body, the sunshine etc..... be as specific and detailed as you want.  Keep going until you have run out.  You can pick this Gratitude Diary up at any time to remind yourself of all the blessings you have in your life.  How does it feel to know that you have so many wonderful blessings in your life?  Great I'd say!

Exercise 2 - Breathing Gratitude into your life

This is a very simple exercise that can help reprogram your cells so they understand and vibrate gratitude.  Draw the reiki symbols you have been attuned to in front of you or on your hands.  Place your hands on your body - anywhere that is comfortable for you and let the reiki energy flow.
If you do not have reiki symbols, you can still do this exercise and get results.
  • Bring gratitude into your heart

Take a few slow deep breaths with the exhale taking longer than the inhale.  Remember to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, letting the air fill your stomach as you breathe in.   While inhaling, imagine that you have gratitude coming into your heart and filling up your entire body.
  • Speak out loud what your are grateful for

After you have inhaled gratitude, pause for 2 or 3 seconds and then speak out loud what you are grateful for in your life.  Notice the vibration of your voice through your body as you say what you are grateful for.  Enjoy that feeling!
  • Repeat

Practice this at least once a day for 5 minutes (you could do this after completing your Gratitude Diary).  You will soon begin to notice changes in how you think and how your body feels.  Enjoy these feelings!

Using Affirmations for Gratitude

All of the above exercises are reprogramming your mind to see the wonderful things in your life and not concentrate on lack or negativity.  It has been stated that nearly 90% of our thoughts are negative, no wonder we find ourselves focusing on lack. Each negative thought can be a described as a negative affirmation which can be even more powerful than positive affirmations because we often find them easier to accept and believe.  It is these negative thoughts (that little inner critic/gremlin which speaks to you) that validate our negative internal beliefs.

Positive affirmations are designed to challenge those negative beliefs and stop th eflow of negative thoughts that seek to validate them.  Affirmations are more than just repeating words.  Saying affirmations enables you to become aware of your thoughts and words in everyday life.  As the phrase goes 'Your thoughts create your reality' so using positive affirmations is one way to acknowledge your blessings in life.

The more you can consciously inject the spirit of your affirmations into your daily thoughts and words, the quicker they will work for you.  Below is an affirmation on gratitude from the website www.vitalaffirmations.com.  You can use this website to assist you to create affirmations around any area of your life.

"The more grateful I am, the more reasons I find to be grateful"
