A Creative Way to Succeed
We all need heroes, role models. Plato was a follower of Pythagoras. Hemingway was influenced by Mark Twain. Olympic winners learn competition skills and practice techniques by watching their heroes again and again, repeating how they executed every move. This works for musicians, writers, athletes, ballet dancers, and just about everyone who's ever achieved excellence in any endeavor.
People never improve unless they look to some standard or example higher and better than themselves. --Tryon Edwards
I have my own role models too, both current and from long ago. It's much easier to succeed when you learn from your predecessors, those who have already succeeded at what you're aiming to accomplish. It's like reverse engineering, taking apart some mechanism to see how it works.
If you try to learn all there is to know about the raw food lifestyle, you'll be overwhelmed. Instead of trying to absorb everything about raw foods all at once, chew on one raw food writer at a time, one successful practitioner, and one role model. Study that person's work in detail.
Then work outward. Find three people whom that practitioner loved, and find out everything about them. Repeat this as many times as you can. Do this, and you'll soon have your own family tree of mentors. Then it may be time to start your own branch.
How Creativity Happens
No matter how you try, you'll not be able to imitate, to copy exactly what your role model did, because you have a different body, different family, different surroundings, different pressures and responsibilities. You'll be forced to adjust, to be creative and that is how you'll discover who you are and find your way.

What if you have less time, less money, and more physical problems to overcome than the author of the raw food book you're reading? Good. Nothing is more paralyzing than to have all the money in the world, all the free time you desire, and every possible ability to do anything. Given all that, most people would do nothing.
It's the limitations placed upon you that force you to be creative. For example, having a shorter leg for most of my life made me very creative when it came to clothes. My need to hide my limp gave me a certain ingenuity in making attractive, fashionable clothes to detract attention from what I used to perceive as an offensive part of my body. Having numerous physical problems in my younger years has forced me to be very innovative when it came to achieving superior health in my fifties.
Life is contradictory. It is limitation that gives freedom to creativity, gives it wings.
Raw foods lifestyles are no different. It's where and how we depart from our role models that will make us unique. That is how you will find your own path and add to the universal raw food story.
Don't have time? Then you'll have to find some tricks for simpler raw food recipes. If you face a particular health issue, it will force you to stick with raw foods, experimenting to find a way to uproot the source of the problem. It's constraint that fuels your creativity.
In emulating our role models, often what we seek is to internalize their way of looking at the world. You don't want to copy what they see and do, but you do want to find the method they used to search.
The most important single influence in the life of a person is another person ... who is worthy of emulation. -Paul D. Shafer

My Raw Food Role Models
Annette Larkins
You'll be amazed to see this ageless dynamo in action. She has beauty, wits and a winning attitude, and she's still turning heads at 70! Annette is a shining example of the anti-aging benefits that long-term raw foodists can and do experience. Don't miss this recent news story featuring Annette's secret to the fountain of youth!
She just returned from Hollywood, California where she taped The Doctors Television Show and she wrote us this note in answer to my question:
My comment on the B12 issue is that after all these years without any negative incidents where B12 is concerned, I am not personally worried about it. The problem is not that people don't get enough of it; the problem is that the body doesn't absorb it properly because so many people are eating foods that prevent proper assimilation.
My other role model is Storm Talifero.
Storm Talifero of the Garden Diet is 62 years old and has been a successful raw vegan athlete for 40 years. He has always exercised heavily and practiced martial arts. He takes no supplements of any kind and does not eat dehydrated foods or raw cacao. As recently as the last couple of years, he has made subtle adjustments to his diet and exercise routine. He finds that he can no longer consume the vast quantities of raw food that he used to, even in the presence of daily vigorous exercise, so he has started to pay more attention to limiting his intake.
According to his wife Jinjee's blog:
Although Storm has been successful at bulking up his arms, legs, chest and back, he still fits in to the pants he wore in his 20s!
Storm himself has this to say regarding his current approach:
Even within the raw vegan diet there is a huge amount of latitude that can be obtained as far as muscle mass by making changes to what and how much you eat and exercise. One of the greatest things I have learned from all of this is that I really didn't need to eat as much as I thought I did, even though I am eating a 100% raw vegan diet. By gradually reducing my food intake and continuing to work out every day on an athletic level and by moving away from heavy weights to lighter resistance strength training such as the bo sticks and body bars I am transitioning to a lighter body. And in this way I feel lucky to have stumbled upon another loophole in the trial of time's passage. Read more on Storm's blog.
There are more role models for you to choose from. Check out the interviews with ten remarkable women who successfully went raw and changed their lives, in my second book, Beautiful on Raw: Uncooked Creations.
Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing. -Albert Schweitzer
We can learn by their example and see what is possible when so much of the world is telling us it can't be done.
Most of the time you find in people who are successful over the long term that there are common threads that run through their lifestyles such as some form of calorie restriction, vigorous exercise and being in tune with their bodies; listening to and heeding their messages. My role models have done just that, and that is what I'm planning on doing: to sail into my senior years with the figure of a teenager and the complexion of a woman in her twenties.
Without heroes, we are all plain people, and don't know how far we can go. -Bernard Malamud

Constipation...a 'Fast' Remedy
For good health, you need a bowel movement at least once a day. Twice is better. Medically oriented websites note that merely not having a bowel movement on a particular day doesn't mean you're constipated per se. As a raw-foodist of fifteen years' experience, I'll say this: Unless you're fasting, not having a bowel movement daily is constipation. Continue reading Constipation...

Is Nail Polish Toxic for Your Body?
Recently I watched the movie My Sister's Keeper. The story focuses on two teenage girls, one of which, Kate, has leukemia. She's in a hospital, where we see her aunt at her bedside painting the girl's nails with a bright nail polish to cheer her up. The scene proclaims defiantly a girl's gotta be a girl, deathbed notwithstanding. I squirmed: The doctor's standing right there not objecting to this procedure. Why You Need to Learn From People You Disagree With
One reader got annoyed, finding it offensive that I tie health achieved through the raw food lifestyle to beauty. She wrote: Being able to 'tell' whether another human being is 100% raw by their looks is insanity.
Raw foods did change me--and not only physically. Before I went raw, I would have been upset receiving such a negative remark. Now, however, I'm able to understand and respond to her lovingly.
The raw food lifestyle makes you deeply aware that you get what you send out. You'll begin to guard yourself against allowing any negative emotion to penetrate your heart, even when you disagree with a person, or find a remark unhealthy, or less than fully rational.
Some time ago, I was conversing with one yoga instructor who was quite unsympathetic to my hip limitations. I reported to him that his words hurt my feelings. I'll never forget what he said: No one can hurt your feelings unless you have a wound that somebody's words can rub. Heal your psychological wounds, and other people's words can never hurt. Would you be hurt if someone said you have purple hair (assuming you don't)? No, you would think it is silly, funny, whatever. But you'd never be upset, he said. That's for sure.
His implication: I can be hurt only if I, myself, consider a perceived insult to be true.
The truth of his lesson hit me like a brick, and I haven't been the same since. Words carry precisely the meaning we give them. Our reactions to words can tell a story about us.
Often, too, things we don't want to hear are the very ones we need to hear. Sometimes we resist the very information we need the most because it makes us uncomfortable.
You better believe that health and beauty after 40 are tightly linked. In my first book, Your Right to Beautiful, I emphasize that the inner and outer body are two sides of the same coin. You can be very healthy after 40 only if your internal organs are normal in form, color, and function, which is to say: youthful. And if your internal organs are getting healthier, you will, I contend, see yourself getting younger on the outside.
If you aren't seeing changes in your appearance, this may be a strong indication that something else must change to allow your body to correct problems you've inherited from a previous diet. Review your diet. Are you eating too much in the way of gourmet dishes? You may need to look into colonics, or go on a juice fast, or implement a wheatgrass regimen. Your cleansing likely hasn't gone deep enough. Read the testimonial from this lady. Maybe her case is like your own: Could Parasites Be Compromising Your Raw Food Success?
Let me present two different points of view. We can always learn from an opposite position. At least, we need to hear whatever comes our way, if for no other reason than to learn tolerance for other viewpoints.

Here is one email:
Dear Tonya
The supplements we can take are never as fully absorbed as when coming from their natural context--in natural raw food. Life is a holistic intelligence, a living interaction and combination between itself and our own Being at all levels.

....Kill an animal and you've killed a whole entity. Pick a fruit and the tree remains, little or no harm having been done, and perhaps a little good...And this way--this approach of the heart, this aim for harmlessness and respect for all life--is in my opinion positive energies on a vastly larger scale than dietetic concerns alone.
Here is another email that came several years ago:
Tonya, I really respect your opinion and enjoy your newsletters. But we do differ in our beliefs. I hope you can learn from me as I have learned from you. I believe some of us do need animal protein. After [I'd been] eating all raw and vegan for three years, the tissue protecting the nerves in my spine was wasting away, causing pain and muscle spasms in my neck. Eating raw egg yolks restored this tissue, eliminated the pain, and also eliminated the depression I had experienced for years.
Here's one more that came as a response to my February newsletter:
If Raw Food is not for you, it's maybe because of a Vitamin D deficiency. Most vegans know already about B12, but not necessarily Vitamin D. ...So if you are a 100% raw foodist, you aren't getting enough. Believe me, I spent time in the sun without sunblock! Please tell your readers to get tested for Vitamin D deficiency.
Let me express a deep gratitude to everyone who shared his or her testimonials with me. All of them were written with the best intentions to help others, and that alone requires that we give them our utmost consideration.
Some people do find they're helped with B12 supplements or B12 injections. And some ask me why I don't offer B12 patches. But how could I offer them, since I'm not using them personally? However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't use them.
If supplements work for you, that's great. It's just not my way. It seems if you supplement with B12, then a strong case could be made for the need to supplement with Vitamin (hormone) D, then with hydrochloric acid, and then with cyanocobalamin B12, or should it be methylcobalamin? Too complicated for me. That brings us to the next question that I am asked: Where do you get B12?

Where do I get B12?
When I chose the raw food path in 1997, I started as a raw vegan. At that time the B12 issue wasn't as controversial as it is now. The raw food books taught that a human body needs very little of B12 and that a healthy digestive system can secrete, store and reabsorb B12 as needed.
I completely embraced Victoria Boutenko's theory that organic foods are inseparable from insects. They insert their eggs into the flesh of fruits, vegetables, and greens, and these insects are good sources of B12 for humans. It made perfect sense to me. I took to heart Victoria's advice not to wash organic produce. For example, I didn't wash wheatgrass (bought from a reliable source) before making a juice. My idea of heaven was eating mulberries and other berries straight from the bush. I prefer not to dwell on how many bugs and other insects ended up in my digestive system...
Vegan raw lifestyle was working for me.
But with each passing year the B12 topic was getting murkier and murkier. Warnings of possible B12 deficiencies were coming from everywhere. Just as the next person, I was affected by B12 and Vitamin D deficiency stories. The last thing I wanted was to compromise my newly achieved health. I searched for a solution.
When I visited my mother in Moldova in the summer of 2009, I saw that she'd started keeping hens. At the time, I was reading quite a bit about B12 deficiencies. I knew a raw egg to be an excellent source of B12 as well as Vitamin D, so I started to drink two eggs, straight from the shell, every day. And I liked them. (People who say that raw eggs are slimy never ate them really fresh.)
Later, I became interested in meditation. Some texts suggested that consuming animal protein blocks spiritual energy. So I stopped eating eggs for a long time.
Then, one of my readers sent me a link to an article by an 86 year-old female bodybuilder. Was I impressed! If she'd said she ate boiled eggs, I would have ignored it. I knew well that a body building diet with a lot of cooked protein is extremely unhealthy. But the lady mentioned she eats raw eggs.
About the same time, I came across information that beneficial omega-3 fatty acids are found mostly in the yolk of the egg. Coincidentally, perhaps, we relocated to another area where one of Nick's relatives keeps hens, giving us again access to fresh eggs in exchange for our juice pulp. Homegrown eggs, please know, are many times more nutritious than store-bought.
All this synchronicity rekindled my interest in raw eggs. My octogenarian bodybuilder drinks three glasses of egg whites, but I went again with two whole eggs.

Then, several months later, I noticed that it's when I'm 100% raw vegan that my flexibility in yoga class is at its peak. Eggs disappear from my diet again.
Then, a week ago I met one elderly lady. She told me an interesting story of how at the age of twenty she cured herself from tuberculosis. How? Drinking a lot of raw eggs. By the way, the Russian internet is full of cure stories attributed to raw eggs.
Your head's spinning, perhaps, if you're the sort looking for precise advice. As you can see, I don't have all the answers, but I'm always searching.
The raw food lifestyle is a journey. Sometimes the road's straight, clear and paved. Sometimes it's a backwoods trail. Sometimes it takes backtracking. I go with the flow and don't have rigid views.
There is some research that eggs aren't good for us. (And you'll get no argument from me when it comes to a big plate of mama's scrambled eggs.) There is also a mountain of research to say that raw eggs are a storehouse of many nutrients the human body needs. More on raw eggs and the B12 issue read my book Raw Food and Hot Yoga.
I experiment on myself, try different variants and I believe this fluctuation helps me to stay very healthy on 100% raw. I use the same approach when it comes to everything else. I remember there was a time I overdid the greens theme. I couldn't so much as look at another green leaf. I developed an aversion to anything with greens in it. I decided to take a break from greens. Shakes made from coconut water, banana and a spoon of hemp seeds became a centerpiece in my diet for almost three months till my taste for greens came back, and I started to enjoy salads and green smoothies again.
Being 100% raw and not eating at night (Quantum Eating) have been constant themes in my life for some time now. I keep doing it because it works. You can be sure I'd change in a heartbeat, if something didn't feel right.
Trust your own judgment first and foremost. Read other people's testimonials because everyone's experience is precious and can help you to ease your own journey.
Whatever position we take--'pure' vegan versus eggs, supplements versus raw foods only, it's very important to remember that behind every opposite (sometimes edgy) opinion is another soul struggling to be good, to stay healthy, to find the way, and ultimately struggling to love.

Here is a beautiful quote I found:
The person in front of you is the reflection of yourself... be kind to yourself.

When the Raw Food Diet isn't for You
One reader unsubscribed from my newsletter, leaving this comment:
My raw journey is over! I had been a strict vegetarian for 18 years, a vegan for 14 years, and a strict raw foodist for almost 5 years. Though I followed your advice and the advice of other raw food gurus, I developed severe panic attacks. The entire time I was on the raw food regimen, I was feeling weak and dizzy, almost every day, and with a growing intensity...Finally in the summer of last year I woke up...
How can you claim that the vegan, raw food diet is the most natural diet for humans if no one can deny the fact that, as a species, we have always eaten meat, and have cooked our food for a huge number of years?!
Whew! A tough one. This woman is clearly well-meaning and sincere, and it does seem she has indeed given the raw food lifestyle a solid go. Note, however, that while an attempt at the raw food lifestyle may be sincere, it may at the same time be inept.
Let's look at what my advice really has been, over time. I've said numerous times, in lectures and in print, that one should not follow slavishly any presented or presupposed rigid regimen. Experiment...experiment... experiment... Listen to your body... adjust... The adjustments must be made daily, not after almost five years of signs that strict raw foodist is not working for you.
I say again: I'm not a guru. Neither do I claim to be a master of anything. Since I've been handed many health problems, I am on a personal quest to resolve them painstakingly one at a time. All I'm doing is sharing my personal experience, and the ways I've dealt with issues facing me along the way, backed by research that supports my ideas. It's all done in the hope of inspiring you to look for solutions to your own health challenges in creative ways. I don't give specific, individually tailored instructions. At most, in my books and newsletters, I point to ideas from which you can benefit.
It's true there's no denying that our species has (more or less) eaten meat, and cooked for a very long time. Archaeologists, paleontologists, and anthropologists find campfires and burned bones in every corner of the world and from every age. From this, however, it simply doesn't follow that meat and cooking are ideal for our health.
If meat and cooking are so wonderful--so natural, in one sense of that word--then I'm moved to ask: Why are so many people sick? And why are they sick, in particular, in ways that increasingly appear to have to do with food choices.
In fact, most people see remarkable improvements in their health and appearance when they go raw. In my book, Raw Food and Hot Yoga, I specifically emphasize that B12 issues must be addressed, and I give ideas of what can be done to avoid deficiencies. I'm not rigid when it comes to being a raw vegan. I share ideas supplied by my readers, who have successfully resolved deficiency issues, so you can take precautions never to develop them in the first place.
Here's another email responding to my last newsletter from an interesting man named Alan:
Tonya...I have to disagree on the assumption that it's hard to be 100% raw in cold climates. I myself went cold turkey all raw in the fall in Oregon. I'm now in far north Idaho. I go outside all the time with a tee shirt at 20 to 30 degrees when everyone else has heavy jackets on. They ask why I don't have more clothes on. Maybe the ability to be all raw in a cold climate should have been on your top ten list of indicators. Too few around, mind you, to prove this concept.
When I received this email, I got excited about renewing my practice of tempering with cold. I started doing it while writing my Quantum Eating, but then backslid, using my artificial hips as an excuse. Definitely, having metal hip joints does make the experience more difficult. But Alan's email has renewed my enthusiasm to try again.

My work is all about stretching the boundaries of our possibilities -- about what can be done. The moment I'm told I cannot do something, I want to try it. That's why today at 54, with two artificial hip joints, I am taking belly dancing classes, though a regiment of orthopedists insisted it's not possible. I am very careful and do only the moves that my hips allow and I have never felt better in my life.

If someone, quite without preparing, takes a winter hike in a T-shirt or joins a Polar Bear club, then gets a cold or other ill effects, he has no one but himself to blame. Preparing, working up gradually, respecting the limitations of one's body--that's the key.
Alan also wrote:
I'm not sure how much of my past has to do with my present acclimation to cold temps. Here are some things that may have played a part...strict vegan since 1977...lived in the Pacific Northwest except for a few years in Florida...for 10 years straight, I ran for an hour every day all year round, regardless of weather, in Portland, Oregon...I've swum regularly in cold rivers and lakes...spent much time snowboarding and cross-country skiing...went all raw in the fall of '96...I don't own a sweater or jacket--only a sleeveless vest. So along with a good diet I have a long history of being out in the elements. I have often wondered how the deer, moose, birds, etc. in the area live outside all winter long. Now I am beginning to feel at one with them!
Beyond raw to me means after being transformed, having been all raw for 10 years or more, and it becoming completely natural. Then you no longer think or talk about it and go into a lifetime of 100% induced creativity.
There is a different tone in Alan's email, you'll agree. He's tried, adapted, striven and found his individual victories.
So what do we make, in the end, of these two messages?
Point number one... Let your own body be your guide. You'll need to change your course once in a while. Adapt! Improvise! Your goal must be perfect health, not perfect raw!

Point number two...The 100% raw lifestyle is not for everyone. Neither is going without a jacket in winter. Don't undertake new lifestyles lightly. Expect small failures on the way to bigger successes. Share your story, so others can learn and get inspired to try new things.
If, somewhere you got the notion that it would be easy, linear, a perfectly smooth road...if somehow you believe that your health journey will require no challenges for you to solve, you'll be disappointed.... And I understand.
But if you are ready for an interesting and eminently worthwhile ride...stick with me. We can learn together.

Solution for Sensitive Gums
My mother ran a chocolate factory back in the former Soviet Union. A child's dream! And a nightmare. By the age of 50, my Mom didn't have a real tooth left in her mouth. Raised on chocolates, pastries, and candies, I'd had seven root canals by the time I was 25. It looked as if I would be reprising my Mom's fate. Long story short: I had to become very creative when it came to dental hygiene.
It's imperative that no part of your gums be painful or sensitive. If there is pain or sensitivity, that means there's infection. This ongoing infection is destroying the bone around your teeth.
Infected gums appear red and swollen. They feel sore or tender, and may even bleed when you try to brush or floss in certain areas. Your dentist will tell you: Apply special cleaning and attention to any such area. Keep flossing, even if it hurts. Persevere...you must persist through the discomfort till you find relief. Listen to this advice. Do not let it come in one ear and go out the other.
Strict oral hygiene must be maintained, especially around compromised teeth, or gingivitis will recur.
You may have a tendency to avoid dealing at all with sensitive areas that cause you pain. For these tough spots, to remove extra food residue and bacteria from between teeth or around bridges or implants, you can use a product called the interdental brush. You may have seen these in the drugstore. Though they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, you'll recognize these little brushes by their resemblance to miniature Christmas trees. Versatile and effective, they can reach places ordinary brushes can't and work in a way dental floss won't.
I have found that delicate, sensitive, or compromised gums will benefit greatly if you dip your interdental brush into our Bentonite Oral Balm. Gently work it between teeth, around the gum-line, and anywhere that you experience sensitivity. Be diligent--brush such problematic areas several times a day--till the sensitivity is gone.
Healthy gums are pink, firm to the touch, and nowhere are painful or sensitive. Never ignore gum infections, no matter how minor.
My Bentonite Oral Balm with White Oak Bark and Wheatgrass evolved out of my own desperate need to keep my dental situation under control. I made sure every herb known for its soothing, healing and antibacterial properties was added to the formula. Not only is it a superior product for teeth brushing in general, but when used in conjunction with interdental brushes, it will help save your compromised teeth from further damage, preventing the need for future expensive dental work.

The Bentonite Oral Balm works! And with our Valentine's Day Special, you and your Valentine can try it for FREE.

How to Grow Taller
If you've never met me, you might not know: I'm short. And I've been shorter. I used to be five-foot-two. Then, in hip-replacement surgery to correct congenital hip problem, doctors had to knock off a half-inch of femur on one side so I'd be symmetrical. Shorter still. But since then, I've gone to five-foot-three. Not a huge difference I know, but still how did it happen? Continue reading how to grow taller...

Dear Tonya, I have bought and am in the process of reading Raw Food and Hot Yoga. I am glad you are changing your title in the next edition because initially, it was the title that kept me from wanting to read it. I still find yoga very boring but I am hoping to be convinced to give it an honest shot by the time I finish your book...I am just in awe of your life story, accomplishments, your vast research, your open honesty, your self discipline, and the strong example you set for women to be able to strive for true beauty without guilt and selfish feelings. -D.M. Coming out of the Closet...

Going Beyond Raw
New Russian Book
Special of the Month!

FREE Raw Recipes and New Blog Articles!

Raffle Winners Announced!

Coming out of the Closet...
I am sure in the last few months you received several emails asking this question in one form or another: Have you noticed that many raw food leaders, who once proclaimed that the 100% raw food diet is ideal no matter what, are now coming out of the closet and revealing that they are eating some cooked food?
Obviously, this reference is not to a falling off the wagon scenario. Coming out of the closet is being applied to raw food authors who have revealed or no longer conceal that they're now eating some cooked food. As if one gossipy recovering alcoholic were saying to another: You know, Bob's drinking again--I saw him. As if a sacred rule had been violated. A holy text blasphemed.
What people do in search of health is their business, but what surprises me is the implication of some secret. It's no secret. If you are observant, you can often recognize an attained raw foodist just by looking at the person. And, correspondingly, recognize someone who has made a significant departure.
My experience is that over a period of several years, raw foods literally transform you into a different specimen. Just as there are biomarkers of normal aging, so, I submit, there are identifiable biomarkers of a healthy long-term raw foodist, which you can recognize simply by observing a person who follows a 100% raw food lifestyle.
Every rule has exceptions, and so does my list. I'm sharing it only in the hope that you will find it helpful to know what to expect in yourself if you stay on a 100% raw course. Continue reading How to Recognize a Raw Foodist at First Sight...

Going Beyond Raw
I've received many emails similar to this one:
Below is a quote concerning a new Victoria Boutenko book Raw and Beyond. Will you be making any comments?
Green Smoothie Queen' Victoria Boutenko re-envisions the raw food diet under the lens of important omega-3 science. Chefs Elaina Love and Chad Sarno show that a diet consisting exclusively of gourmet raw food cuisine may not be so great for your health. All three authors have put their reputations as raw food gurus at stake to share the important information they have discovered.
--Dr. B. J. Adrezin, CEO, POTENT FOODS, Inc.
And since I've been asked, let me share my comments...
When authors share their experiences, their ups and downs, their concerns and insights in a genuine, open way with us, we admire their courage and become all the more willing to learn from them. Victoria relates in Raw and Beyond: I choose to be healthy instead of being 100% raw. But I still believe that raw food is the most natural and ancient way of eating for humans. By explaining the pitfalls in my own raw food journey, I hope to motivate many more people to try a raw food diet.
That same spirit of honesty compels me to share my point of view, because without respect to everyone's experience, we'll never achieve a universally valid picture of the raw food movement in its essence, with its successes and failures.
While I was working on my book Quantum Eating in 2006-2007, the working title was Beyond Raw. Ultimately, I rejected that title, but for a time, I was quite in love with it. At that time I'd been 100% raw for almost a decade. I felt inspired to write my third book because something remarkable was happening to me.
I did go beyond the mere eating of raw foods as daily choices. Rather, raw became a lifestyle. The word beyond, it seemed to me, nicely reflected the new direction, the new and farther extent of my journey at the time--onward, I thought and still think, to a farther side.
My raw food lifestyle was changing me dramatically, on every level. Once drawn to 'gourmet' raw foods cuisine, to the many recipes which produce raw equivalents to and imitations of traditional dishes, I'd decided to abandon all that fancy stuff. My body was thriving on simple whole raw foods--delighting in them. Cravings vanished. And it seemed I needed less food altogether. I stopped eating at night - this change alone was taking me beyond the benefits of a common 100% raw food diet, which generally means eating up until bedtime.

A truly raw lifestyle is only partly about food. My health journey went beyond (with its meaning in addition to) food-related practices. Exercise was a vital component. I don't think it is even possible to achieve any degree of success as a raw foodist without regular physical practice.
I am convinced it's hot yoga (Bikram yoga), which by itself is a powerful anti-aging practice, that helped me to avoid pitfalls in my raw food journey. Of course, I had setbacks, but they were never serious enough to make me question my 100% raw choice. Quite the opposite, often during my Bikram yoga class my ever-increasing flexibility makes me marvel if my age is indeed turning back.
Many people comment on how difficult it can be to follow a raw food lifestyle in a cold climate. I couldn't agree more. Here is another way that hot yoga as a form of exercise can help. It makes it easier to practice a raw food lifestyle even if you don't live in the tropics. Fortunately, you can now find Bikram yoga studios all over the world.

That said, I don't want to give the impression that a 100% raw food lifestyle is easy. It's not. And I'm also not saying everybody should pursue it. I am sharing my own experience to encourage a creative approach in your own health journey.
In May, 1997, I stopped eating anything cooked. Let me dig into a couple of gems that kept me going at the time:
My experience has been that by eating 95% raw food, I received 95% of the amazing results. After comfortably eating 100% raw food for several years, it seemed that I was receiving 1,000% of the results.
--David Wolfe, The Sunfood Diet Success System
...For those of you who are on raw foods 99%, you may consider food comforting and pleasurable for the rest of your life. Hanging on to that 1% cooked food in your diet keeps you craving cooked food. It's like someone who quits drinking but consumes one shot of vodka every Saturday. Is this person truly sober?
--Victoria Boutenko, 12 Steps to Raw Food
Now, after nearly fifteen years on 100% raw foods, I've found these sayings so close to my own experiences that I feel I could have written them myself.
The authors of the book Raw and Beyond are, like me, essentially ordinary people seeking health. We write no sacred truth, no gospel, nor claim to. We're simply individuals who were brave enough to open up and share our own experience.
That experience--and the experimentation that delivers it--is the essence of the raw foods movement. Those experiments and experiences are personal. Individual. Learn from every raw food book, but find your own path. There is no other way.

Have you ever watched people brushing their teeth? Not good enough. Continue reading Brushing Your Teeth...

The Raw Food Lifestyle: Real Life Examples

When you Have Doubts...

This Month's Reader Appreciation Raffle Winners Are...

The Raw Food Lifestyle: Real Life Examples
I encounter some people who tell me they've tried the raw food diet and failed --though I always wonder how much effort trying really encompasses. Can't be done! they say. It ain't easy, I'll agree. But it can be done. And has been done--with real success--by some pretty neat people.
In my November newsletter, I invited successful long-term raw foodists to join in a study led by a gerontologist, Dr. Luigi Fontana. We received more than 30 responses to participate in this raw food study from people practicing the raw food lifestyle, ranging from three to up to twenty-four years and LOVING it.
However, due to the stringent requirements only twelve people qualified. Still, two great totals, given that long-term raw foodists are rare. I was elated reading their inspiring emails.
The volunteers were asked to provide Dr. Fontana with a description of their daily raw food regimen. Even though the basics are the same, we marvel at their creativity.
Eating a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds is pretty much the foundation for any raw foodist's success, and these formed the bulk of our respondents' dietary content. The variety was also impressive. Some people include sprouts, fermented foods, and seaweed, but these don't appear on everyone's menu. Said one 24-years-on-raw veteran:
My diet consists of lots of fresh fruit, large quantities of raw vegetables, and some nuts and seeds. No oil, nothing refined, almost none (maybe twice a year) gourmet raw food, very little added salt.
Of the 12 volunteers screened into the study, all but one include some superfoods in their regimens. Over half of those who include superfoods or supplements also take Vitamin B complex or B12 in some form. Two people said they do consume dehydrated foods, while the others do not. Three people watch their intake of fat very closely, eating only minimal amounts of oil, or none at all:
I have been completely raw for over 9 years. My diet consists of organic fruits and veggies, very little fats (mostly in the form of a few nuts and ground flax seeds daily, infrequently a few seeds, and even more infrequently minimal olive oil).
This person also noted that on a daily basis she uses Hallelujah Acres Barley Max brand--an organic barley and alfalfa mix--and LifeGive brand Chlorella.
One person focuses on instinctive eating with a mono diet--one fruit or vegetable at a time, no mixing or blending.
Diet isn't everything. In order to succeed long-term with a raw vegan diet, or good health in general, exercise is a must:
I have been living raw, 100% for eight years and still going strong. I've been physically active most of my life, some years to the extreme and some years at a more leisurely pace.
Not everyone in the study gave details about exercise. But two people noted that they follow an intense exercise routine, including running marathons and doing Bikram yoga.
Dietary variety is plentiful across the group. Some take seaweed or sea vegetables, some not. Olive oil is the preference for many who consume oil, chia for others. Some take a short and particular list of herbs and supplements, while others vary and experiment a bit. Some eschew vitamins in supplement form altogether, while others take the Bs and some D.
One goes for sprouted buckwheat and occasional dandelions. Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries appear on several lists, goji berries on one. Smoothies for breakfast...raw soup for lunch...salad for supper--a very large salad, one emphasized--seems to be a common pattern. A few of the less common inclusions: blue-green algae...calcium bentonite clay...nutritional yeast...sauerkraut...an avocado a day...pink Himalayan salt...bee pollen...

You'd be hard pressed to find two identical paths. It's simply up to the individual to discover what that lifestyle looks like day by day.

I hope these examples will encourage you as you are making your New Year's resolutions to get to the next level on your health journey.
In my Raw Food and Hot Yoga, you'll find more information and ideas on how to find your own path, discovering experimentally what works best for you. In doing this, you will become your own raw guru and set yourself up for success--for life!

A New Look at Concentrated Nutrients
I promised to continue sharing with you what I have learned from the Calorie Restriction Society conference. One of the presenters was Dr. Andrzej Bartke, director of SIU's Aging and Longevity Research Laboratory. He has won several major research awards, including the Methuselah award for generating the world's oldest mouse. He presented the most astounding study results: when mice were fed pomegranate extract, grape seed extracts and other
nutritionally packed combos, it not only didn't help to delay aging but also had a negative effect on longevity. Read more in Vitamins Can Shorten Your Life!
When I hear about studies like this, I barely can resist saying: I told you so. These scientific studies make perfect sense. For a detailed explanation read Quantum Eating.

Myths About Cosmetic Preservatives
We all get concerned when we see a chemical-sounding name among ingredients in our cosmetics. When You Have Doubts...

My Facial Exercises video, posted on YouTube, drew this reaction from a reader:
Great video! Your skin is LOVELY--not a flaw, nor an age spot or sag. Obviously you are very healthy. Thanks for sharing. Please, in your next video, I'd love it if you would frown to show that you do not have botox.
My reply to this kind person--call her Catherine: Thanks indeed for the compliment, dear viewer, but you've missed my main point. I mentioned in that video that I haven't been eating cooked food for thirteen years (it's fourteen now). Why have I taken this path? Simple--to avoid the toxins cooked food delivers. For the most part, these toxins, dangerous as they may be in the long run, aren't outright killers. Botox, however, is.
In case you haven't heard about two scientific studies which revealed that injected botulinum toxin (i.e., Botox) can travel to the brain, degrading proteins. One study was conducted in Italy, and published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2008. Rats were given injections of botulinum around their whisker muscles, and three days later it was found that some of the toxin had reached their brains. Another study was done in Canada on cats. It revealed
that the toxin passed easily into the surrounding muscles and weakened all the muscles in the area. The results support other research that has already shown that botulinum can pass through tissue surrounding muscle.
With each Botox treatment, toxicity rises. The need for more treatments becomes greater with time--not less. Botox is a beauty drug of the worst kind; it puts you on the needle. Once you're on it, you'll begin to look worse when you don't have it. You'll need it again and again. Ultimately, Botox isn't a beauty-maker--it's a beauty breaker.
It's sad, frankly. There is so much artificial health and beauty around, that the very concept of real, natural has to be defended and proven. We have trouble seeing the plain truth: Inside healthy greatly improves your outside looks. Plus skin care is of paramount importance. What do we need to do, how far do we need to go, to make the point clear? Catherine wants proof. I could hand out notarized certificates saying I'd never 'done' botox, never had a nip or tuck. A private detective could be hired to follow me around, making sure I don't do these things. I could even do a YouTube video How to Frown? And, next time I give a presentation I could strap myself to a chair and let audience members prod and tweak my face to their hearts' content. Still, I doubt I'll be able to convince everyone.
But there is something you can do that can be hundred times more persuasive. Adopt the raw food lifestyle yourself, and your skin, body, eyes, voice, even the way you move, will grow younger.
The transition is not easy. It definitely can be a bumpy, two steps forward, one step back journey, that requires some intelligent tailoring to fit your own body. I presented the accounts of twelve raw food veterans in the first part of this newsletter, so you can get some helpful ideas. There are many others who are experimenting with raw foods and getting their own proof. Ultimately, it's your
own transformation that will make you a believer in the beautifying powers of the raw foods.
Here is an excerpt of the email I received while working on this article.
Hi, Tonya, I have been on your program for about two years now...I live in NYC and basically walk around the city making funny faces and generally nobody cares. Or if they notice they just ignore me.
I do not practice yoga (will get it into my schedule at some point) but do practice regularly pilates, heavy weight training and cardio. My endurance and strength has increased beyond what I ever thought I could do. My whole body, face and neck has changed for the better. I truly glow. I look 10-15 years younger than my age of early fifties and feel even younger....I feel good and I receive compliments almost every day. I consider myself in transition, as I am still detoxifying and it is a lovely, at the same time frustrating and thought provoking journey. - M.

Thanksgiving Reader Appreciation Raffle Winners Are...

Thanksgiving Message...

Holiday Season...
Thanksgiving...Christmas dinner at Mom's...New Year's Eve...parties, socials, get-togethers at the office or club meetings...dining out, or in, with friends.
All that food! Tons of it, and it's feel-good food, too. You know the question I'm going to pose on your behalf: Should I indulge?
The rationalizations we've all used: Well, it's just one...It's not gonna kill me...After all, it's Thanksgiving...It would be rude not to...
It's true. That one slice of turkey, just a nibble of cranberry sauce, that weeeee bit of chocolate, against the background of an honestly observed raw food diet, plus exercise, won't kill you. (It might make you sick, however!).
Still, Don't do it. It is not worth it. I hear it all the time: this one-time indulgence starts an uncontrollable downfall from the proverbial raw food wagon.
Call me a killjoy if you must. I'll stand on this ground for the sake of Thanksgiving--the very idea of giving thanks, being grateful.
If you've been observing a raw food diet/lifestyle for a while, even just working toward it, improving an otherwise conventional diet, then you have a lot to be grateful for. You've likely shedded some excess weight, feel more energetic, don't get the seasonal colds you used to. People probably say, Gee, you're looking good...You feel better about yourself. Brighter. Happier. More optimistic.
This holiday season you will either take a step forward or a step back. You will make one of those two choices, consciously or not. There's no neutral ground, no holding still. You will either surge forward, or you will lose ground, psychologically. What's more, during this season, you'll do that--either way--several times.
Nice people, your friends and family, but they won't be much help. Oh, you MUST have some of Ellen's pumpkin pie...And uncle Marty will make those annoyingly patronizing comments of his about your silage diet, as he makes that gravy lake in his buttery mashed potatoes.
Just love them back! You can love and be with and enjoy your family and friends without eating what they eat. The fact is they secretly want what you have.
Don't give them the pyrrhic victory they think they want--you, that is, eating normally again. Give them the beginning of the victory they need. Give them, instead, the victory of your own example.
Resolve, this Thanksgiving, this entire holiday season, to show real thanks, real gratitude for the ground you've gained. So many people have never been given such options, the knowledge of raw foods and to experience the profound benefits this diet brings. You're fortunate. Blessed. For that, be grateful! Stand firm!
Show it by saying the nicest, most genuine No, thanks you can. No preaching. (You do want to be invited back next year, don't you?) Just exercise gracious, quiet restraint. Do what you have to. Eat properly before you go to the event. Make your own raw food dish. Nibble what you can. Invent excuses, if you must. Go home hungry if you have to, or tell your quiet, modest truth, and be prepared to laugh with everyone else at your own expense.
Need some help? If you haven't yet, watch my video: Raw Food Rocks! It's especially designed for the holiday time, and for you.
Stay clean during the holiday season, and I'll promise you a new reward. When January comes around and you got through the season without cheating, you will feel a new pride, a new determination, and a new kind of gratitude. Do it, and I guarantee there will be so much more yet to come to be grateful for.
Raw foods will give you exceptional health. They will give you a more youthful appearance. Will bring you clear complexion, but that's not all...
In the upcoming year I'll introduce you to yet another glorious side of the raw food lifestyle that's never been explored before.
Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving Super Special Deal!
Most of my customers like our new cream, but some of you have asked me to bring back my old cream formulation. Wrote one email correspondent: I like your new cream, but I really loved your old one. Please bring it back...
I'm fascinated by the reasons people give for wanting the old cream back. The new one's too rich, says one. Not rich enough, says the next. One thanks me for reducing that old vanilla scent, while another laments its reduction. What do I do?
It's not as if we entirely changed our cream's formula. For the most part, we simply increased the sea buckthorn oil concentration and added a little tapioca starch, creating a moisture block to protect the skin from drying.
I do believe in the old maxim If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I'm a fiddler. I cannot stay with the same product, no matter how good it is, once I find something I think is even better. I have high standards for my own skin, and I'm always trying out new things. For that reason, I pass improvements on to you.
My dirty little secret is: I run a small business. Really small. Wal-Mart will not be picking up our products anytime soon. Strange as it may seem, I'm not looking for growth by any means possible.
Why? Because I don't work to please everyone. I work for you and, importantly, for me. Every product I make and offer on my website begins with me, and stays with me. Until, that is, I find something better. I don't think there's ever going to be a whole suite of creams, in different varieties, scents, intensities. Baskin-Robbins can have 31 flavors. I won't. (So, no, those of you waiting breathlessly for Fresh Apple, English Ivy, Tuscan Mist, or Chocolate Cherry Surprise will likely not be getting your wish.)
Instead, I am searching to create the BEST possible products for you. And, yes, for me--if I don't use it, I won't offer it to you. The raw food movement is my life and my passion. When it comes to beauty and health products, my game is constant improvement. Obvious reason: you and I are getting chronologically older, and I prefer always to stay ahead of this formidable opponent, called aging.
Know, too, that my approach to facial products is different from those you'll see from cosmetic companies. You will receive from me no hyped miracle in a jar, be it a cream or a masque.
The miracle you want is right there, awaiting you: It lies in raw foods. If you have skin breakouts, do not expect some cream to fix it for you. These, like all disease and illness, are symptoms of internal issues and must be addressed from the inside. I do not believe in relieving symptoms--I prefer eradicating their causes. If you have skin issues, you'll do better starting with my books than with my products.
Excluding the offending foods from your diet while beginning daily juicing are the surest ways to a clear complexion. My beauty products are enhancing--not curative. Just a bonus, if you will, to make your skin exceptional.
While developing my beauty products, the best and closest standard I have is whether and how well a product works for me. So I'm telling it to you straight. The products are just the way I like them. If you happen to like them too...great! Then you, too, can benefit from my experience and research. If you don't like them, and choose to buy your cosmetics elsewhere, that's perfectly okay, and we'll still be friends.
If you are enjoying my products, I would like to say thank you for your continued support and offer a special deal for the holidays...
If your order subtotal (not including shipping) is $100 or more from my online Natural Beauty Store, no matter what you order, you will receive a FREE jar of my Anti-Aging Facial Cream--that's an added value of $26.00! Those of you who haven't tried our new version, here is your chance to go for it. Or perhaps you would like to get some helpful holiday gifts for yourself and for your friends and family. An Inside Peek at the Science of Calorie Restriction and Raw Foods

Science Needs You!

Special of the Month!-Anti-Aging Secrets

FREE Raw Food Recipes and New Blog Articles

This Month's Raffle Winners Are...

Inside Peek at the Science of CR and Raw Foods
Just got back from a week in Vegas...
That's the kind of line that gets predictable responses. How much did you lose? Nothing. How much did you win? A lot, actually. But not in money, and I didn't so much as slow down at the slots or the blackjack tables. In fact, I spent my days in Las Vegas at a conference focusing largely on scientific research relating to calorie-restricted diets. Ironic, isn't it, in the home of the ten- dollar, eat-till-you-die buffet?
I met some interesting people--scientists dedicated to and passionate about their research, and about possibilities for enriching and extending human life.
In the months to come I'll be writing about many of the new things I have learned at the conference. Now, however, I want to give you just a general overview.
It's an established fact that a calorie-restricted (CR) diet is the most effective method of lifespan extension across a whole range of species from yeast, worms, and fruit flies, to rats and mice. CR considerably delays or eliminates the onset of such diseases as cancer, diabetes and heart disease in animals generally, including other primates physiologically similar to us.
A growing body of research shows that the same beneficial results are happening to people. However, new data was presented that vegans (even without restricting calories) get the same health benefits as CR practitioners.

This conference took a new direction. I noticed there was a shift from Calorie Restriction to Dietary Restriction. Two presenters strongly advocated that real success is to be found not in mere calorie restriction per se, but in a diet that recognizes that food composition is every bit as important as calories. As you might guess, I definitely think this idea is a step in the right direction.
One of the most interesting scientists I met at the conference: Luigi Fontana, who holds MD and PhD degrees and is with the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Sciences at Washington University. Dr. Fontana was one of the main draws for me to this conference, as he is one of very few scientists able to proclaim any robust acquaintance with the raw foodists. He has done practical research on populations of vegans, even raw vegans.
I outline some highlights of Dr. Fontana's thought provocative research on raw food vegans in this article: The Science of Raw Foods.

Science Needs You!
We are what we eat. An old truism, to be sure, and one which raw vegans may grasp as firmly as anyone.
We are also, in part, what lives within us. The human gut, and that of other mammals, contain large numbers of living organisms--microbiota --dependent upon our bodies and upon what we eat, and which figure in our digestion.
There may be no more significant human population to study, in this area, than the small and hard-to-gather population of raw vegans.
Why are raw food studies so hard to find? It's because we are hard to find. You can fill a stadium anywhere in North America with people suffering from diabetes, but in some cities filling more than a phone booth with raw vegans is a stretch. Dr. Luigi Fontana seeks your assistance in his important study: Effects of a raw food diet on gut microbiome health.

Announcing an Extraordinary Opportunity for Raw Foodists:
Participate in Cutting Edge Scientific Research!

Dr. Fontana writes:
At Washington University in St. Louis we are studying the effects of a long-term raw food diet on gut microbiome ecology. That is, we want to see the effects of a raw food vegan diet on the type of bacteria living in the colons of people eating a raw food vegan diet for at least THREE years. It seems highly possible that the composition of microbial communities in the gut affects both the extraction of energy from the diet, and a person's metabolic health.
The study is very easy. It is in no way invasive. And you do not have to travel to St. Louis! We will ask you to collect just three stool specimens one month apart, and to record what you are eating (a 7-day food diary) before each stool collection.
Yes, you've read it right. I am, asking you to sign up for a scientific study involving, well...stool. Yours. A little different from my usual text--a new raw food recipe or a tip to give your skin a glow. It's that word stool. Let us pretend no one's laughing.
So...here's the straight poop: Dr. Fontana's research team will make this easy and comfortable for you. They'll send you an easy-to-use, sanitary container, with simple instructions on how to collect the stool sample. Once your sample is collected, you can send it back to Dr. Fontana's lab--already prepaid by the research study team, of course--in the FedEx box provided. (And, yes, FedEx does even know what it's carrying!) Researchers also will ask you to measure your body weight and height on the day of stool collection.
On behalf not only of Dr. Fontana, but of myself and health seekers everywhere, I hope you'll participate. The effort on your part is minimal, and the rewards, for science, the raw foods community and general population, may be great.

If you're interested in participating, please email me at: info@beautifulonraw.com. Write FONTANA STUDY in your subject line, and I'll be glad to connect you with Dr. Fontana. His research team will decide whom to include in the study, and will communicate with selected participants directly.
From all those who qualify and volunteer through this newsletter, we'll draw a name at random, and the one who is selected will receive a jar of our facial cream. After all, it all comes back to beauty!

Special of the Month! 48-Hours Only!

 The times are indeed changing...
How heartening it was at the CR conference to find strong scientific support for the methods that I have been advocating. Not a single major concept presented in any of my books has been overturned.
Lets make it clear...I claim no special kind of brilliance--just an attention to the basics. Nor are the ideas I present truly new. I base my beauty, health and longevity methods on practices tested not just for years or decades, but centuries.
For the next printing, however, I am changing the title of my book Raw Food and Hot Yoga to Secrets to Radical Rejuvenation. This title is more precise, since this book is more of a companion and a logical continuation of Quantum Eating.
In this book I continue to explore a fascinating, rare topic about dry fasting. I also share what I've learned visiting anti-aging conferences. I discuss calorie restriction in light of the latest scientific discoveries and what you must know about anti-aging medicine. There's a chapter about losing weight and - for that other, smaller crowd who needs it no less - gaining weight. Is the raw vegan diet for everyone? What is normal weight loss on raw foods? Are some of us exceptions and simply cannot achieve optimum health eating a raw vegan diet? Why do some people fail on the raw foods lifestyle? What about B12? What about a theory for eating according to your metabolic type? You'll also learn about A Perfect Bowel Movement: The Key to Your Best Health and Looks.
I'm offering you BOTH books--Quantum Eating PLUS Raw Food and Hot
Yoga--as a package. During the next 48 hours only you can get the set for just $40.00 plus shipping and handling. That's a savings of $12.00 off the total price if purchased separately. You must place the order in our online Natural Beauty Store before midnight Wednesday November 9th (U.S. Eastern Time).
A great gift for a friend or family member for the holidays. A great gift for yourself, come to think of it. And those holidays and the New Year--along with the changes we are all resolving to make in our lives for next year--are just around the corner...Click here for this offer!

Life After Detox

Answering your Questions...
Special of the Month!-Limited Time Offer

FREE Raw Recipes and New Blog Articles

Reader Appreciation Raffle Winners for October!

Life After Detox
Cleansing. It's downright fashionable nowadays, in any fitness-minded or nutrition-oriented conversation. Just dash off the term--I'm going on a cleanse or Can't come to dinner Friday. I'm cleansing--and they'll all know what you mean, or think they do.
Cleansing ought to mean the same thing as cleaning, or cleaning out, but it doesn't seem to when it comes to the body. Now, me--when I clean my office or living room, it's all about getting things out. Dirt. Dust bunnies. Old magazines. Junk. I don't put anything in. And so should it be with bodily cleansing. Such cleansing, for all too many, means buying a box at your health food store, drugstore, or supermarket. Inside the box is a jar, canister, bottle of some kind, containing a powder, a liquid, something. Read the directions. Mix it. Eat or drink it, and...you're cleansed.

You can't cleanse without stuff, industry tells us. Got to have this miracle, this super cleansing stuff.
Cleansing for me means three things. Thing one--it means less. It means getting out, not putting more in. Thing two--it means using a safe, time-tested method and not some latest gimmick. Third--it means to stay as raw as possible. So your cleansing might be a juice fast. Maybe a water fast. Sometimes, a green smoothie cleanse, or even a predesigned program put together by seasoned raw food experts. Such cleansing also includes healing of your digestive system. For more information, read Cleansing and Digestive Issues.
So you did a cleanse. Now what?
The thing about our office and our living room is: Dirt and dust bunnies and old magazines come back over time. Cleaning is not permanent. The same is true of bodily cleansing.
How unclean your house or your body becomes, after your cleaning or cleansing respectively, depends on what you do. Cleansing this week is not a license to drink Coca-Cola or eat Mac and Cheese next week.
I believe wholeheartedly in cleansing and have made it an integral part of my raw food lifestyle. But what do I do, or you do when the fast or the cleanse is done? That's where the rubber really meets the road.
Cleansing, please know, can be as unpleasant as it is beneficial. You might experience detox issues. Don't use your next cleanse as an excuse to retreat into old habits. Use it, rather, as the opportunity to upgrade your diet and to start or improve on your exercise program. Use it, in particular, as a tool to eliminate some crappy--yes, that's what I said--foods permanently.
The time after a cleanse is just as important as, and maybe even more important than, the cleanse itself. After detox, please don't retox! Once your cleanse is done, up the ante. Make some changes toward increasing your health and your commitment.

Now is the perfect time to advance your progress and begin gradually incorporating Quantum Eating principles. Picture how it is when you clean a messy house with years of accumulated rubbish. At first, the effort expended is huge, and the mess gets worse before it gets better. Each day afterward, though, it gets easier. Doesn't it make much more sense simply to devote a little time each day to maintenance? Do that steadily, and you'll never have to go through that mess again! Your house, for the most part, will stay clean. It is much the same with your body. An extra bonus: the next time you do a cleanse your detox symptoms will likely be less bothersome. Cleansing works when you follow it as a lifestyle, rather than as a sporadic fix. I used to fast regularly, 36 hours every week. Since adopting the Quantum Eating method, however, I no longer find it necessary. Why? Because fasting and cleansing are inherent to the QE lifestyle. Juice daily, avoid eating in the evening, and you'll find you easily maintain the progress you made when you went through the effort of a cleanse. No more yo-yoing back and forth--which is outright harmful to the body in the long run. With a Quantum Eating lifestyle, your juicing and periods of abstinence are built right in. Follow it, and from then on you don't have to go on a special cleanse at all. You are in fact living a cleanse. We age daily...why not cleanse daily?
Cleansing is a necessary part of eliminating years of built-up toxins and waste that the body must deal with daily. Quantum Eating is your way of keeping these from accumulating all over again. Learn the basics. Maintain the progress you have made, and move beyond. No time like the present to get started!

Answering Your Questions
Q: Who can practice Quantum Eating program?

A: Everyone can benefit from skipping the evening meal, but women in their childbearing years should not be restricting calories.

It's important to educate yourself before making any changes in your lifestyle. Be sure you know what you're doing. How Not to Start the Raw Food Diet

Q: Are any of your books available in Russian? I want my Mom to read them.
A: I have many Russian-speaking readers. Good news, my first book, Your Right to Be Beautiful: Miracle of Raw Foods, is nearly ready for publication in Russian. What's more, we've launched our new Russian website: http://./
Maybe you have Russian-speaking relatives who don't know enough English...I invite you to invite them to visit our new Russian website. It's in its developmental stage now, but in the future I'm determined to make this website a valuable resource for Russian speaking people, where they can find an abundance of information about the far-reaching possibilities of the raw foods lifestyle.
If you speak Russian, I need your help! Please, take part in the forums. Write about your personal experience with raw foods. Share your raw food knowledge with first time visitors. Newcomers are in need of your encouragement and support.

Q: Tonya, will you do a DVD on Facial Exercises?
A: I've made every effort to make the pictures in my Rawsome Flex book self-explanatory and the directions easy to follow. Surely, I would have made a profit on such a DVD, but I haven't created it. Why? Because I don't think it's necessary.
To perform facial exercises, at least initially, requires effort. To you, it might look like an arduous task to master. Naturally, you might be thinking, a DVD would make it easier for you. But it will not. After all, how much can you learn about riding a bike by watching the DVD instructions? My facial exercises are very simple, but remembering and mastering them, gaining familiarity with your own face, will still require a lot of discipline.

You'll find that to refresh on an exercise, opening a small book is more convenient. Plus, a DVD may even be a distraction because I don't want you to watch me doing the exercises. You should be watching yourself in the mirror. Feel how your facial muscles contract and relax, how the fresh blood is rushed to your skin and underlying tissues. Creating an awareness of your own face, that is what will make a difference how effective the facial fitness will become for you. Often it is closing your eyes that proves to be the most helpful. Go inside yourself and become an observer of these subtle muscle movements. I suggest you learn by doing. Start gently. Adapt my techniques to your own face. Your own bodily sensations should be your guide--no need to mimic the visual exactly. If you've been following my work, you know I always discourage you from following exactly what I do, or exactly what someone else does. I only share my ideas and always leave space for you to explore and grow on your own.

All Raw versus High Raw

A Great Way to Kick off Your Raw Transformation!
Answering your Questions!
Special of the Month!

FREE Raw Recipes and New Blog Articles

This Month's Raffle Winners Are...

All Raw versus High Raw
It was a Pillsbury Doughboy moment: after my lecture a woman pokes my husband Nick in the stomach--a not inconsiderable belly it was -- and tells him, You cannot be raw and have this!
It was as if a light went on in my head. I felt, for just a moment, like a wife who realizes suddenly she's the very last one to learn about her husband's infidelity: How could I be so naive, when it was so obvious to everyone else? I TRUSTED him. How could he?...I couldn't wait to be alone with my Nick.
Once in our car, I looked him straight in the eye: She's right. Let's have it! Everything. What's going on? Why are you still overweight and have THIS? I poked his belly. Unlike the TV doughboy, Nick didn't giggle.
I'd thought things were perfect. Every single morning, we'd have a freshly extracted vegetable juice--mine mostly of green vegetables, his made with apples, beets and carrots. Mine would be about 12 ounces, his twice that. We'd both have soaked nuts, about a cup each. I like pistachios, he likes almonds. Then we'd have a salad, mine -medium, his - a big one. But still, you cannot be 50 pounds overweight on this food. Here and there, we both eat fruits. Peaches, plums, watermelon, melons, persimmons, whatever we can get in season.
I pinned him down: What else are you eating that I don't know about?
According to conventional medical standards, my husband is a healthy guy. He's 52, doesn't need any medications. His blood pressure is a normal 120/80, his blood sugar level around 100. He plays competitive table tennis regularly. He gets a cold, like most people every once in awhile. Medical tests say he's in good health. But I have to admit: There has been no grand transformation in his appearance.
I waited for his answer. What else, I insisted again, are you eating?
His answer: You don't want to know.
No. I do, I said. I had to appeal to his social conscience: For the sake of all the people who read my books and newsletters, you must tell me the truth. I must know the truth. If not as your wife, I implored, then at least tell me as you would talk to a researcher and writer.
He confessed some indiscretions we'll call them - well, lots of them. I felt wounded. Just as if he'd cheated on me with some bimbo he'd met while squeezing a supermarket melon. Silly, I know. But that's how I felt.
He confessed to samplings at Costco. In Ralph's supermarket, en route to pick up some organic Swiss chard, he'd sample just a bit of that spicy pimento cheese spread. And, of course, you've got to have a cracker or two to spread it on...Then came more strained rationalizations. At Whole Foods Market, he confessed, he'd choose from their seven varieties of healthy soups. Healthy corn bread, and vegetarian chicken, whatever that may be. And there was also some real free-range organic chicken...
What am I going to do about it? Nothing... It's not my body he's feeding. I've decided to accept that my dear husband most likely will never be 100% raw. The fact is he doesn't feel any need to be 100% raw, so long as he's healthy and active. And since he doesn't mind that protuberance hanging over his belt, even that whole looking better argument is lost on him.
We're motivated differently. My past is different from my husband's. Memory plays differently for me than for him. I think about all my young years spent on crutches. My youth was wasted on doctors and hospitals to treat my congenital bilateral hip deformity. It's not nearly enough for me to be merely a healthy woman of 53. I want to feel 20. I want to look not just youthful, but girlish. This second youth is important to me, I think, because I missed the first one. So important that I don't allow myself to cheat when it comes to raw foods. I want to experience, and I want to tell you what happens when you stay 100% raw versus--like Nick--simply high raw.
When we visited the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego CA and Austin TX, I saw people getting younger, more beautiful, changing before my very eyes, sometimes even after just one week of 100% raw. I've seen this transformation in my husband, too, a number of times. Then, once he adds those cooked foods, his body slides back to the reasonably healthy and his normal self.
Nick and I have each made our choices. You'll have to do the same. It all depends on what you're after. If getting old in a relatively healthy way is all you want, a high raw diet will work great for you. You will pass all your conventional medical tests with flying colors. You might still catch an occasional cold or flu, but so what? Even your doctor gets them! You might live to be 80 or even 90. That's a great result. And if that's good enough for you, then, dang--it's good enough, whatever anyone says. But still, no one at the old folks' home will be guessing you're forty-two.
As for me, I must have it all. Young looks included. And for that, I believe going and staying 100 percent raw is imperative. You will still age--no, going raw doesn't stop time itself--but you will not age like everybody else. You will age in a very different way, as a distinctly unusual specimen. And you'll have to deal with a few seeming inconsistencies. A few wrinkles amid an eerily youthful facial glow. You'll abound with youthful impulses competing with a mature restraint.
I believe three principles are pivotal in order to succeed on the raw food diet/lifestyle:
1. Learn everything you can about the raw food diet/lifestyle. This means reading at least a dozen books, learning how other people succeeded and, this is most important, learning from their mistakes. There are methods and techniques to thrive in this way of living, and they must be obeyed.
2. Proceed gradually: make small changes in your diet, and observe your body. Move into the diet slowly, reinforcing what works and adjusting what doesn't. I began my raw food journey in my late thirties. Transitioning in my case took two years. Anything faster than this period for people over forty, I believe, might not be wise.
3. Realize that the raw food lifestyle is not only about food. Regular exercise, sun bathing, de-stressing your life, all are necessary for you to succeed in rewinding the aging clock and to see the remarkable transformation in your health and appearance.
People who tried the raw food diet and failed, most likely disregarded one of the above principles. On the other hand, people who succeeded on a long-term raw food diet can offer you a wealth of information. I would like to introduce one such person to you in the next section...
A Great Way to Kick Off Your Raw Transformation!
As we fight aging, the battle becomes ever more challenging. It's easy when you're in your 30s. But forestalling aging during your 40s, and even more so in your 50s, is like wrestling a heavyweight.
I'm fascinated with how people older than I am manage to succeed in staying youthful. One such person I look up to is Storm, who's 61 and has been raw for 40 years. He's an astonishing example of staying young, handsome and fit at any age. Storm's wife Jinjee is a shining example in her own right of the power of raw foods. A natural beauty, she retains a graceful, youthful body in her mid 40s--after five pregnancies! How do they do it?
Detox has been vital to their success. Storm and Jinjee offer a 21-day detox program they created for use several times a year. Sign up for Jinjee's Daily Raw Inspiration to learn when the next 21-Day Raw Cleanse is scheduled: http://JinjeeTalifero.com

Answering Your Questions
Q: I liked your original facial cream so much. Why did you change
it?
A: My customers were satisfied. The facial cream has been our best selling item for the past 5 years. But I take the view that a product can always be improved. And I believe it's always my duty to give you the best I can.

One thing people liked about the original was that the cream was easily absorbed by the skin. But occasionally I'd get an email saying that during winter, the cream--thanks to this fast absorption--would not provide enough oil protection. The base formula remains the same--with a few small improvements.
One...We added more sea buckthorn oil, known for its remarkable healing and nurturing properties, from which aging skin can benefit. You'll even see this in the product's new pleasant, creamy hue. The product gives you a deeper moisturizing effect, making it more effective in addressing dryness.
Two...We added a new ingredient--organic tapioca starch. Derived from the roots of cassava or yucca, food-grade tapioca gives a silky-smooth texture to the cream.
The cream still absorbs quickly, but I believe we were successful in achieving a moisture lock effect that was missing in the original cream. The cream now has an energizing, tightening feel, giving you smoother skin instantly. It is ideal as a day cream. Use it under foundation or after applying the cream, you may decide no foundation is needed! It's very gentle and can be used around the eyes.
Finally, one more ever-so slight change...it's still vanilla-scented, but the scent is now more refined, subtler.
All in all, I believe the new and improved cream will work even better for you.

Q: My question is about using your facial brush. I'm 62, my skin has fine lines, and it's looser than a young person's (or Tonya's). [When I use the brush] it doesn't hurt or get too red at all, but I am afraid I will stretch my skin. I sometimes hold it tight while I brush. But I haven't ever made as much of a brushing sound as Tonya does in the video, [From Dry Skin to Glowing Complexion]!
Can I damage my skin, since it [is, after all] getting porous and older? I wish Tonya would more often address skin care for older women. We're the
ones who really need to know techniques for our face--and not just young-looking faces. It would be good if Tonya would do a video on brushing and care of an older lady's skin--somebody who is obviously wrinkled and coming into these techniques later in life.

A: Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to make such a video because I'm not a licensed cosmetologist. I cannot treat or experiment on others. I can only share what I do personally and explain the reasons why. However, I do have an idea that might help. If you want to try it, but you are afraid that it might not work because of older, thinner skin, how about using my brush and cream on the back of just one hand? Be diligent and consistent. Brush every single day, and thoroughly. After brushing, apply my cream. After 28 days--the time it takes for skin cells to renew themselves--compare your hands at that point. Let the results speak for themselves! I am sure you'll be convinced, not because of anything I said, but as a result of your own experiment.

Special of the Month-4-Book Set!

This email came on the 23rd of August:

Dear Tonya, ...your books are excellent, thoroughly researched, each chapter a world in itself, elaborated intelligently and with much care and diligence, understandable also for beginners. I already have some experience in the raw field, read many books but I had to be patient to find yours. Better late than never.
You fill a gap in the wide field of carrots and juices which concerns aesthetics and the female point of view. Thank you so much! I also found questions answered on which even capacities on dermatology could not help me (liver/age spots removal).
Thanks for your very important and most motivating dedication to Rawsome and Beauty. It surely is often hard to be an exception but nowadays where people are looking for truth it is a necessity to be a living proof that it works.--Corina from Switzerland
This month we are offering the Four-Book Set: my first three books -Your Right to Be Beautiful, Beautiful on Raw and Quantum Eating- and the ebook: 100 Days to 100% Raw at an additional $15.00 off (that's $29.95 in savings!) for the next 48 hours only!
You must place the order in my online Natural Beauty Store before midnight Friday September 9th (U.S. Eastern Daylight Savings Time). The price will revert back to $70 at that time.

Readers Raw Food Testimonials for August, 2011
Dear Tonya, you and your assistant were quite helpful to me when I was making my transition into a Raw lifestyle a couple of years ago. Today, I am nearly 100 percent Raw, and feel and look better than I have in my entire adult life! I underwent major medical trauma in 2005, and many of the effects (largely from medications I was on) have cleared, and areas of my body restored. Doctors are surprised - but interestingly, none of them want to believe that it has anything to do with having converted to a plant based raw diet! Thank you! Two Faces...Two Lifestyles

What You Must Know About Cosmetic Labels!
Special of the Month!

FREE Raw Food Recipes and New Blog Articles

And this Month's Raffle Winners Are...

Two Faces...Two Lifestyles
Some time ago, a reader shared photos of two women, juxtaposed to convey the contrast between their diets and lifestyles and the effects each woman's choices had made on her looks.
The email said: I'd like to hear your opinion.....Don't say that just genetics are at play here. For someone pursuing such a healthy lifestyle, the first woman should look much, much better. I have seen this in other health gurus as well...
As I don't have releases, I'm showing both photos with the faces partially blacked out to block identification. The first picture's caption read: the woman is 51 years of age, a TV health guru who advocates a holistic, natural diet--pescatarian, with lots of organic fruits and vegetables. The second woman, also about 50, is a TV cook who eats meat, butter and lots of desserts.

You may have heard the expression: Beauty is as beauty does. My own particular take: Beauty is as beauty eats. I have written extensively that beauty comes from within, that what we eat is reflected in our outward appearance. These two pictures would seem to contradict that message. But not so fast!
Comparing one individual to another is ultimately unfair. If we are truly interested in the effects of diet, the only legitimate pictures are before and after views of the same individual. But if I stopped there, you might accuse me of avoiding the question.
In my book Your Right to Be Beautiful, I wrote: Each time I see a woman, I see not only the way she looks, but also the way she could look. What I perceive is how far her image diverges from her potential beauty. Let's get a clearer view...
The first woman is pictured at her worst--a candid, un-posed shot, without makeup, in glaring daylight. The second woman gets a huge break--she is posing for a professional photographer, in managed light, aided by a team of professional makeup artists and hairstylists, and quite possibly cosmetic procedures.
But that can't be all there is to it. What's likely the main culprit behind the first woman's unsightly photo? Skin care! It makes a vast difference. After forty, skin care becomes mandatory if we want to look our best. Its value mustn't be underestimated.
Some women don't believe in skin care per se. In an effort to live free from chemicals or unnatural methods, they will let the natural look descend to outright neglect.
That said, I do not believe the first woman looks unhealthy. I see in her photo no puffiness, no eye bags nor other signs of internal organ overload. I see nothing about her appearance that couldn't be corrected with a good daily regimen of skin care and facial exercises. If I had my way with her, she would be glowing in no time.
A candid shot...and a glamour shot...and of two different women. Not only is it an unfair comparison, it's neither apt nor informative.
These photos, considered together, do teach us a lesson, however: Please, don't compare yourself to anyone else. The verdict will likely be unkind. And it may well prove disconcerting, demotivating.
Often people come to the raw food lifestyle because they have health problems. The body takes care of the inside first. Often the body lacks the vitality to give immediate positive results on the outside--especially if it's fighting disease and accumulated toxicity - although with time and persistence, genuine health and beauty will reveal themselves.
We must consider each individual case and adjust our expectations accordingly. It's your health, your development that matters. It's not about how you look as contrasted with others, but it is, simply, all about you.
Just as I finished penning this article, I received an email from Sarah Best, the illustrious editor of Get Fresh! Magazine. She wrote that recently in the mainstream media, the following statements have been frequently made by various over 40 celebrities: losing weight will age you, and post 40, we simply can't have the face and the body, along with the view that being fat provides us with a great cosmetic filler. One of these commenters was the second woman pictured above! Talk about synchronicity. So Sarah wondered if I have something to say on this topic: Is it really true that women have to choose between their faces and their figures after 40?
Sure, I had quite a few ideas, so I wrote an article that begins like this: I'm reminded of a common motif in Russian fairy tales. A knight comes to a fork in the road, where stands a pillar. The writing on the pillar foretells what will happen, depending on which road he takes. The messages we receive - like the knight - don't always make the right choice any more clear. Read the whole article Face or body Can you have it both ways? on Sarah's new website: www.sarahbesthealth.com/.
What You Must Know About Cosmetic Labels!
There was a time when I believed in printed labels. But look what I've discovered: Looking for Green Organic Raw Cosmetics?
I'm all for honest competition. I have been telling you the truth to the best of my knowledge about raw foods and why I eat only fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds in their unprocessed form and do not eat anything from a container.
And I will continue to tell you things as they are, no matter whether you favor my products or not. So...if my cream is not raw, then is it still good? It is the best I was able to formulate. When we do use a preservative, we choose the one that does the work with the tiniest possible concentration.
Why am I using the most potent oils I can find and the most effective formula I could possibly put together? It's for one very simple pragmatic reason. I am the biggest consumer of my own cosmetic products--every last one of them. And staying healthy and looking good is important to me. In the same way that I don't eat cooked foods to avoid toxins, I'm also not going to introduce them into my body through the skin, and I want to know exactly what is in the skin products I'm using, so I insist on full disclosure. I want to know the truth, so I can decide, and decide on the basis of solid information, too.

Even though the Anti-Aging Facial Cream has been our best-selling item for the past six years, we've now changed the formula slightly. One thing we did was to triple the concentration of Sea Buckthorn Oil. Why? Because I am getting chronologically older and I do notice that keeping the skin youthful and glowing requires more effort and more help. So I began experimenting with higher concentrations of this amazing ingredient. And I found that our new formula with three times more Sea Buckthorn oil gives more protection against aging.
What's so good about this oil? The Sea Buckthorn plant is native to mountainous regions in Siberia. The extract of its berries has been used for centuries in Asia, Russia, and Scandinavia, where it has been prized for its restorative properties. People find that it aids in the healing of skin damage from radiation or the sun, acne, skin ulcers, burns, irritated or dry itchy skin, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and wounds. Its nourishing, revitalizing, and restorative action seem to have no limits.
Sea Buckthorn's red and yellow berries offer several essential vitamins that are usually only found individually. The berries contain a high percentage of Vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene (pro vitamin A). The vitamin C content is among the highest for any plant. Combined, these powerful antioxidants function as part of the body's natural defense system, combating wrinkles, dryness, and other symptoms of aging or neglected skin.
I am now using this improved version of the Facial Cream, and we'll no longer produce the original formula. My inviolable rule: I will not offer you anything I am not using personally. The good news for you--even though Sea Buckthorn oil is one of the most expensive oils there is, there will be no increase in price.
How many cosmetic products manufacturers, cosmetic company owners, cosmetologists, or dermatologists place their own pictures on their creations? No one I know! My complexion is my proof. By displaying my own photo on my products, I keep myself continuously challenged. I'm over 50--but don't look it! Exceptional results for me...exceptional results for you. To get the most out of our moisturizer, incorporate facial dry brushing along with the Facial Cream by taking advantage of our Cream Special.
Special of the Month: 48 hours Only! Rawsome Flex at $5 off!
I received this email a few days ago, and it made me very happy:
Hi Tonya, just a quick note to say that I've been using the face exercises, exactly as you said to, and today is the 4th day, and I'm 46 1/2 years old. I cannot believe it, but frown lines that I had developed between my eyebrows in the last year and half are literally GONE!
Also, my nose is lifted and my eyes are open more. In only FOUR DAYS! Also, what you say about not eating the evening meal is so right on. I'm a holistic healthcare professional and medical intuitive and tell my clients all the time if they would just eat little or nothing for dinner, and get to sleep by 10 p.m., that would eliminate most health problems. I don't do this myself-yet-but your reminder is inspiration for me to start now! -T.M.
For those of my readers who have not yet taken the plunge into the exciting world of facial exercises, I have a special deal to offer you for the next 48 hours only! July 2011 Raw Food and Hot Yoga Testimonials
I just began using the cream with the facial brush two days ago and can already see and feel the difference! This is a first and I've used so many different creams in my 54 years. My face has not been this smooth since I was a child. Last night when I went to bed my husband even noticed how good my skin smelled. I recognize the vanilla and he said that he is a fan. Thanks so much! Although I'm weaning myself off cooked foods and not 100% yet, I'm loving my raw diet evolution. I can't wait to share progress pictures as I transform my life. Thanks so much! -R.W.... Continue reading the testimonials...
