Friday night starts with Kay Picart teaching American Ballroom Show Tango from 6 to 7 pm at 308 West. Right after Kay's class world class professional Argentine Tango dancers John Erban and Clarissa Sanchez are giving two workshops at 308 West followed by Argentine Tango dancing. They surely will give a demonstration. Worth attending whether you dance tango or not.www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCnQCMY-xSs This weekend is the third Saturday night Contra Dance at the Boltin Center from 8 to 11. At 308 West, come out for a Salsa and Latin Dance Social from 10 pm to 2 am. Sunday morning is the monthly Vintage Waltz Brunch from 10:30 to 1:30. Don could use some help so get there early or stay late to give him a hand. Bring a dish to share. Sunday evening from 6 to 7 is Beginning West Coast Swing, followed by more Swing and Hustle! Monday English Country Dancing. There will be no Israeli dancing this Monday. We will resume 5/28. Tuesday is a cozy Argentine Tango class suitable for beginners with Nick and Elke from 6 to 7:30. Richard is teaching Waltz and Foxtrot at the Boltin Center this month on Tuesdays from 7 to 9. At 308 West on Tuesday join Ray, Eileen and Gail for a Ballroom Dance lesson and social, doors open at 7. Dancing until 10. Lots of great dancing opportunities, but the schedule is all over the place. They will be meeting after break at the Reitz Union. UF students are invited to come over to join Gainesville's swing dance community at 308 West on Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and some Saturdays for swing dancing. Friday, tonight are two excellent programs back to back at 308 West. First Kay teaches American Show Tango from 7 to 8 pm, $15. Doors open at 8 pm with Dubravko hosting an Argentine Tango lesson suitable for beginners and people with experience, followed by casual dancing and practice. $10, only $7 if you paid for organized dancing elsewhere during the prior week, $5 students. Saturday night is Josh's monthly West Coast Swing Mother's Day Dance Party at 308 West, 7:30 to midnight. Sunday Contra Dancing 101 meets at the Contra Dance at the Boltin Center for the lesson at 3:30. If you have wanted to learn West Coast Swing and have been waiting for a beginners class, Sunday evenings in May from 6 to 7 pm is your chance. Join Swing 101 and learn the basics of West Coast Swing for the four Sundays in May. Suitable for East Coast and Lindy dancers who want to convert what they know into West Coast. $10, only $7 if you paid for organized dancing elsewhere during the prior week, $5 students. Sunday doors open at 7 pm for 5 Rhythms guided meditative dance with visiting guest instructor Amber Ryan. Amber only comes her a couple of times a year so catch her while you can. Monday is English County and Israeli dancing both at 7 pm at 308 West. Tuesday join Nick and Elke for a semi-private Argentine Tango lesson, great for beginners and experienced dancers, from 6 to 7:30 for only $5. After Tango doors open at 7:30, for Ray's Ballroom class that starts at 7:45 pm, followed by Ballroom dancing until 10 pm. On Tuesday Richard teaches Waltz and Foxtrot at the Boltin Center from 6:45 to 9 pm. Wednesday thru Saturday next week is the Batizado, the Brazilians yearly dance festival with their big event Saturday morning at the Boltin Center and open to the public with fantastic performances. There probably will not be dancing Wednesday through Friday at 308 West next week, unless perhaps we may have open dancing on one of the nights starting around 9 pm. Park across the street at the O'Connell Center parking lot. Friday night is Swing and Sway, UF Swing Club and UF Tango Club. Saturday Tango Pavadita hosts an Argentine Tango milonga and Ray and Eileen host a Ballroom dance. Sunday you can still join us for Contra Dancing 101 from 5 to 6 at 308 West and then Swing 101 from 6 to 7. We will not be having Swing and Hustle afterwards this week. Instead, on Sunday come out for Sacred Groove Meditative Dance at 7 at 308 West. Monday is Samba, English Country and Israeli dancing. Tuesday is Argentine Tango with Nick and Elke, Ballroom with Ray and Eileen and Richard will be teaching Waltz and Foxtrot this month. Essie had her last class last Wednesday. We will miss her. Judi will not start her Wednesday class until June. For the month of May, we will play West Coast Swing music on Wednesday nights so you come out and dance and practice. There will be no teaching, just music for dancing. Times will vary, so check each week. This week, Wednesday May 2 dancing will go from 8 to 10. The cost will remain the same as Essie's class, which is $6 general, $4 students. The reason the Festival is so affordable is that all the dance teachers are volunteering their time. The programs most attractive to Folk Dancers are: English Country Dancing on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm, Rio-style Samba from 2 to 3 pm on Sunday, easy, fun Folk Dance Mixers immediately following Samba from 3 to 4 pm and Sacred Groove from 7 to 9 pm. Samba will feature special guest Nilcemar Nogueira of the Mangueira Samba school in Rio De Janeiro. The Festival starts with Friday Tango night. UF Swing Club will host a beginning Argentine Tango lesson. Afterwards, the community's Tango Pavadita will host an authentic, elegant Tango milonga (dance). Come and dance or just watch. Saturday is a day of social dancing. This is a chance for you to learn to dance with a partner and sample several different kinds of partner dancing to pick your passion or poison for the future. Dancing starts at 2 with English Country, Waltz, Zydeco, West Coast Swing and Blues. Sunday starts at noon with high energy dancing, but you can go out whatever pace is comfortable for you. Start with the spectacular, martial arts dance Brazilian Capoeira, Zumba, Samba and the fun Folk Dance Mixers. From 4 to 6 pm you can learn Ballroom Dancing with the wonderful Ray and Eileen from Imperial Dance Studio. After ballroom dancing you will have an hour of Lindy Swing dancing, which is the mother of all swing dancing. Plan to end your Festival with a meditative experience in the non-judgemental, spiritual dance of Sacred Groove starting at 7 pm. Prices vary by session and day.
