Cannot we chant only on beads without the bag? Is there any compulsion that chanting beads should always be in a chanting bag. So why we should think of doing something different? Srila Prabhupada explained why we keep the beads in a bag in a radio interview he gave on 12 March 1968 in San Francisco: So the beads are supposed to be sacred and therefore we keep it in a bag so that it may not touch the dust or any other impurities. He explained once in a Srimad Bhagavatam class: So, this is our process. You mentioned that the Hare Krishna movement could save the world. But Advaita Vedanta depicts the world as an illusion. Where is the question of saving the world when it is an illusion? Venugopal Answer: The Reflection is Also Real You have not properly understood the Vedanta. According to Vedanta, this world, although illusory, is not false. It is illusory in the sense that is something other than what it appears to be. It is not the eternal reality. It is but a mere reflection of the eternal reality in the spiritual sky. This does not mean that it does not exist. An object is real, and it's reflection is also real. When a man shaves his face he uses the reflection in the mirror to do so. So his face is real, and the reflection is also real. If it were not real, how could he successfully shave his face by looking at it? If one takes the reflection to be the original object, he is in illusion. But this does not mean that the reflection does not exist. This material world is real, but it is only the reflection of the spiritual world. So when we talk about saving the world, this is real. People are presently suffering like anything because they are taking the temporary reflection of reality to be the eternal reality. We want to save them from their suffering by revealing to them the means of regaining their original identities in the eternal original reality. People are suffering because they are in illusion. We must dispel this illusion with transcendental knowledge. You can't say that this world does not exist. If it is false, then you are also false, and you cannot ask me this question. That you are inquiring from me proves that you are real and this world is real. Lord Caitanya has descended 500 years ago for bestowing the topmost benediction upon the suffering humanity. That benediction is the Krishna consciousness movement, also known as the Hare Krishna movement. Anyone who takes this movement seriously will easily be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. And those who propagate it are immediately recognized by the Lord for doing the topmost welfare work for the suffering humanity. In the above verse, it is mentioned that one must learn the process of nescience and transcendental knowledge side by side. Does it encourage us to experience fruitive activities and sense gratification, when it says that you have to learn both the processes side by side? Does it mean that to understand transcendental knowledge, you first need to know material knowledge (fruitive activities and sense gratification)? Please clear my doubt. Your servant, Tushar Answer: Like Two Rails on a Train Track This verse means that along with activities for the maintenance of the body, which we are already doing, we must cultivate transcendental knowledge for getting out of the cycle of birth and death. When one has a 107 degree fever, becoming healthy means coming back to 98.6 degrees. It does not mean bringing one's temperature down to zero. Similarly, cultivating transcendental knowledge does not mean that one should totally eliminate activities for the maintenance of the body. Rather he should come to the point of 98.6 degrees where there is proper balance between maintaining the body and gaining liberation from the cycle of birth and death. In other words, for the purpose of spiritual cultivation we require to also have a healthy body. Therefore for this reason we should cultivate material knowledge and engage in material activities to whatever degree is necessary for keeping the body fit, but not for the sake of sense enjoyment. In this way we will free up the maximum amount of time and energy for the cultivation of Krishna consciousness, and there will be perfect balance between matter spirit just like two rails on a train track.
