I have started reading the Bhagavad-gita As it is, and I have some questions. Who creates karma, the body or the soul? In Prabhupada's books I have read the following: After death those who are sinful are taken and Yama arranges different kinds of punishment for them. (from purport to Bhagavad-gita 10.29) The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon nor burned by fire nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. (Bhagavad-gita 2.23) So please guide me. Who is punished after death by Yama, the soul or the body? Regards Indu Answer: The Soul is Punished and Feels Pain The body is just a machine, and the soul is the driver. When there is an accident the car does not feel any pain. It is the driver who feels the pain. Similarly, if one engages in karmic activity, it is the soul who is entangled in the cycle of birth and death experiences the pain. The sinful soul, who is caught up in karmic activity, misidentifies himself with the gross body and the subtle mind. Thus he suffers immensely when the gross and subtle bodies are put into suffering situations according to the actions of the three modes of material nature. This principle applies both when he is on the gross plane of earthly existence and when he is on the subtle material plane when he is dragged to the court of Yamaraja to be punished for his transgressions of the laws of God. Do the Vedic scriptures allow meat eating? I ask this because one of my academic teachers has read the Vedas but still eats meat and has an intense desire for it. This question arises since when a person has Vedic knowledge he is supposed to behave on Vedic principles. Vrutant Shah Answer: For Those Who Are Willing to Be Eaten Srila Prabhupada has taught us as follows in the following excerpt from his book The Path of Perfection that there is a concession given for meat eaters in the Vedic literatures: In the Vedic literatures there are descriptions of rituals and ceremonies in which a goat may be sacrificed in the presence of the goddess Kali. This is described in the Markandeya Purana, but this Purana is meant for the instruction of those in the mode of ignorance. It is very difficult for one to give up his attachments all at once. If one is addicted to meat-eating and is suddenly told that he must not eat meat, he cannot do so. If one is attached to drinking liquor and is suddenly told that liquor is no good, he cannot accept this advice. Therefore, in the Puranas we find certain instructions that say in essence, All right, if you want to eat meat, just worship the goddess Kali and sacrifice a goat for her. Only then can you eat meat. You cannot eat meat just by purchasing it from the butcher shop. No, there must be sacrifice or restriction. In order to sacrifice a goat to the goddess Kali, one must make arrangements for a certain date and utilize certain paraphernalia. That type of puja, or worship, is allowed on the night of the dark moon, which means once a month. There are also certain mantras to be chanted when the goat is sacrificed. The goat is told, Your life is being sacrificed before the goddess Kali; you will therefore be immediately promoted to the human form. Generally, in order to attain the human form, a living entity has to pass through many species of life on the evolutionary scale, but if a goat is sacrificed to the goddess Kali, he is immediately promoted to the human form. The mantra also says, You have the right to kill this man who is sacrificing you. The word mamsa indicates that in his next birth, the goat will eat the flesh of the man who is presently sacrificing him. This in itself should bring the goat-eater to his senses. He should consider, Why am I eating this flesh? Why am I doing this? I'll have to repay with my own flesh in another life. The whole idea is to discourage one from eating meat. Srila Prabhupada has made it very clear how foolish are those persons who take advantage of such Vedic injunctions. Such persons are in the mode of ignorance. You mention that your academic teacher is a meat eater. According to Vedic standards only those who are in the mode of goodness are allowed to be teachers. Therefore if this person wants to eat meat in accordance with Vedic injunctions, he must give up his teaching position and eat goat meat once a month after sacrificing it before the goddess Kali. He then must be prepared to become a goat in his next to be killed and eaten by the very same goat that he killed and ate. I was invited as the guest speaker. It was a wonderful opportunity to share with many the glories of devoting one's life to Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna in a mood of pure devotion, i.e. not asking for anything from Him in return. After we arrived we had a deep, meditative kirtan, and I spoke for over an hour on the science of bhakti. Based on the authority of the Bhagavad-gita I answered the many wonderful questions that were asked. My humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada I appreciate very much your scientific argument against the dogmatic non-scientific argument of atheists. But I have a doubt regarding your statement about avoiding global melt down. You have written: "We desperately need to revolutionize this planet before it's too late. We must now introduce this Krishna consciousness everywhere as the only alternative for impending global meltdown." Please clarify my understanding if it's possible to avoid global meltdown when the Vedic scriptures teach us that the material world is subject to continuous transformation from good to bad, from the 100% pious Satya yuga, to the 75% pious Treta yuga, to the 50% pious Dvapara yuga, and to finally the grossly materialistic present age of Kali. I understand the necessity of spreading Krishna consciousness for rescuing the largest possible number of souls. But the number of those we can deliver seems very small in comparison with total number of conditioned souls in the current age of Kali. Therefore it seems, according to the Vedic literature, that we can't really stop global melt down. Maybe your explanation is simply to give us hope and to inspire us to do as much as possible to save the fallen, conditioned souls. Please clarify this for me. Even though by the end of Kali yuga (the age of quarrel and hypocrisy) there will be a total disintegration of the human society resulting in total anarchy, in the scriptures there is predicted a 10,000 years long golden era of Lord Caitanya, which began 500 years ago and will gradually bring a wonderful, happy Krishna conscious atmosphere to this entire planet. This golden era of Lord Caitanya is predicted as follows in the Caitanya Caritamrita: saj-jana, durjana, pagu, jaa, andha-gaa prema-vanyya ubila jagatera jana The Krishna consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid or blind. --Sri Caitanya Caritamrita Adi 7.2 So what I have written is not mere flowery words meant to encourage those who are sincerely trying to spread the Krishna consciousness movement. But we must try to save the world. Without love of Krishna the entire world civilization is gradually disintegrating until one day it will reach the state of total anarchy. However, one who surrenders to Krishna becomes deathless, free from the clutches of death. In this connection Srila Prabhupada has said: Krish means 'repetition of birth;' and na means 'one who ends.' The one who ends our repetition of birth is called Krishna. Our repetition of birth can be ended only by God. Otherwise it is not possible. Harim vin naiva srtim taranti: one cannot stop one's repetition of birth and death without having the causeless mercy of God. Therefore, Krishna is a scientific name of God. I explained to her how the entire world is becoming increasingly more and more chaotic due to the increase of godlessness in the world. I pointed out to her the dogmatic, non-scientific nature of the popular atheistic argument that the universe comes out of absolutely nothing. There has never been in the history of science one scientific experiment performed in which something even small and insignificant was derived from nothing, what to speak of an entire universe coming out of nothing. On the other hand, we can scientifically prove that every machine requires an operator and that the universe also operates as a machine. In this way we have solid scientific evidence that there must a God. She was very impressed by my explanations and asked me if I am one of the higher-ups in our organization.
