Our Second Dream Leaders Conference was a huge Success!

Our second Dream Leaders Conference brought together 30+ participants on Saturday, June 26th. The event was a great success, and our new group of Dream Leaders is such an exciting and dynamic group of kids! The Dream Leaders Conference is the kick-off event of our Dream Leaders program. The Dream Leaders Conference brings together middle and high school students from all over the DC area of all different abilities and backgrounds for a day filled with fun activities and leadership building exercises. The first part of the day focuses on team-building and confidence building activities. The second part of the day our leaders learn about social issues facing their communities and the global community, and are giving the skills and motivation they need to particpate in and create projects that benefit not only those in need, but their own lives too! After the conference, the Dream Leaders have access to exciting, sustained service-learning opportunities such as Extreme Recess with the Washington Nationals and lobbying with the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy. For more information or to get kids you know involved in future Dream Leaders events, email our Dream Leaders director, Kevin Machnik. You can learn more about the Conference and the Dream Leaders program on our website.

Meet Vander!

After attending our first Dream Leaders Conference in March, Vander decided that disability awareness was something he was passionate about (having Cerebral Palsy himself). We asked Vander what else he enjoyed, and his answer was music and rapping. Vander worked with his Dream Leader facilitator and partnered up with area musicians. He is currently recording a song called "Dream Leaders". Soon, his song will be on iTunes, and he will be shopping it around to record labels. All of the money he raises from the song will go to children in Africa who don't have access to wheelchairs. For the first time in his life, Vander is seeing himself create something he is proud of while also seeing that he is making a difference in the world and his community .

Pop Up @ U Street!
