Extreme Recess LAX

Extreme Recess Lacrosse last Saturday proved a great success. High school and College Lacrosse teams from across the DC area came to share their time and knowledge of the sport. Thank you to US Lacrosse who donated sticks and balls as well thank you to the Chesapeak Bayhawks for donating prizes and takeaways for the kids. The whole event of course would have not been possible with out Georgetown University and their kindness in sharing their field. Great work everyone the whole event was such a fun and beautiful afternoon.

Sam Makes His First Basket

"We made page two," Andrew Horn, DC office irector said, holding up that mornings edition of the Washington Post. John Wall's surprise visit to the Extreme Recess basketball clinic caused the headlines. Parent, David Cordel, sent the story in with a picture of his son Sam's first basket.

Aside from the celebrity appeal the true grit of the story came from its emotional content. Sam shot his first basket that day, and to David that was everything. Dream's For Kids recognizes the life changing effects sports can have on people of all walks of life. This is the fuel behind our fire and the reason for events like Extreme Recess basketball.

David's admiration for his son and true appreciation and commitment to Dreams For Kids was what made the story so newsworthy. The reporter published the story because he noticed the same thing John Wall noticed the day of the clinic. They noticed the same thing that Andrew Horn and everyone who supports DFK knows. That the clinics are an expression of love. Love in real form, not boastful, elborate or intense, but innocent, humble and pure.

Thank you David for your support of this organization. Thank you Sam for allowing us to watch you grow. Thank you John Wall for helping us spread great joy. Lastly thank you to the Washington Post for validating what we already knew, that Dreams For Kids is incredible and revolutionary.

Street Dreams

Dreams For Kids is teaming up with Seed of Thought, Proudly Supporting and Ladder to execute the first Street Dreams event. This two month, one man, cross country bike ride will radically raise awareness for today's growing struggle with poverty.

Australian native, Alex Petrou, will take on the challenge as a passionate yet average man with no previous long term cycling experience. In addition to Petrou's statement DFK will be launching our 1000 for $100 program. While Petrou cycles from California to New York Dreams For Kids will rally 1000 companies along the way to donate $100 to end world hunger.

Another major goal of the project includes great education of today's youth. Along the route Petrou will stop at various schools to meet students and discuss the realities of todays world as well as realistic ways they can get involved. "I'm no one special, and this project will not end hardship but it will educate the youth, they are the future," Petrou said.

DFK can not be more pleased about involvemnet with this potentialy world changing adventure. The ride starts in California in September and heads east toward Texas, north to Kansas and east to DC all the way north to New York.

Lookout for more information about how to get involved and when Alex will be in the DC area.

Intern Spotlight: Michael Jolley

Of DFK's nine summer interns Michael Jolley undoubtedly stands out among them all. A student at The University of Arkansas, Michael is a computer science major and also legally blind.

Michael is the kind of person that inspires the great work at DFK's office. His talents and passions simply overshadow the small fact of his disability, making it just that: a small fact. "Michael's disability does not define who he is, it is his work ethic and spirit. He will make major contributions this summer," Andrew Horn said.

For Michael working at DFK has proved a true joy and learning experiece. "When I was little, I never had any exposure to programs like DFK nor did I ever meet other people with disabilities." Michael said. Michael had to motivate his self to succeed and not all children can find the strength to do that on their own.

Michael is in the process replacing the old website and revamping it, helping along the transition to national expansion. He is an incredible asset to the organization and a valued team member.

DFK Fundraisers

On Wednesday Dreams For Kids interns hosted their first summer fundraiser to benefit Extreme Recess events, Holiday For Hope and the Dream Leaders program. The Happy Hour at Top of the Hill hosted hundreds of people and raised more than $1,000. The evening proved a great opportunity for DFK interns to educate their peers on our mission and really share their passions.

If you want to hold a DFK fundraiser of your own contact
Andrew Horn and our office will help you set up an at kind venue.
