  Dreams for Kids DC

Crossing the
Finish Line!

Dreams For Kids receives its first grant from the leading athletic retailer: Finish Line. Finish Line's Youth Foundation focuses on supporting nonprofits that provide community based access to athletics, especially those that provide services to kids who are disadvantaged or disabled; thus, making DFK a perfect fit for support.

Finish Line's Youth Foundation will be supporting upcoming Extreme Recess events to empower Dreams For Kids disabled youth athletic program.

Dreams For Kids is grateful for their support to help continue changing lives of children living with disabilities.

You can learn more about Finish Line's Youth Foundation on their website.

Extreme Recess participant throws the First Pitch for the Nats vs. Braves game!

We are excited to announce that Dreams For Kids is one of the first nonprofits to partner with First Pitch!

Adrian, one of Dreams For Kids' extraordinary Extreme Recess Participants, threw the first pitch at the Nationals vs. Braves game on Monday, August 1st!

Adrian's parents, Linda & Mike, wrote us telling how the chance to throw the first pitch was "a dream come true for a ten year old boy - who really loves the game!" As Linda wrote "As parents we are all proud of our kids accomplishments... I am not sure that I have ever seen him happier".

Thanks to the Nationals and First Pitch for making this possible!

Adventure Camp!

DFK and World T.E.A.M Sports partnered last week to bring together teens (13-18 years old) with disabilities to participate in an Adventure Teen Challenge! 2011 Adventure Teen Challenge took place

Teens spent 2 full days together exploring the outdoors through various activities including: map reading, First Aid, bike & water safety, canoeing, mountain biking, and hiking.

At the end of the camp teens participate in groups, 12 teams total, in sports challenges. The challenges include navigating and orienteering courses, riding mountain bikes, and finish with a canoe race!

Teens are encouraged to work together to successfully complete each outdoor sporting challenge. Through competition & teamwork, disabled participants build confidence and serve as a role model for others, while inspiring volunteers and other competitors.

The Photo below shows Jerry, an Adventure Camp participant, hiking!

Jerry Carroll Jr., one of our amazing participants, who has been actively engaged in our Extreme Recess events for the past four months, battled the elements to complete a 3/4 mile hike, 6 mile bike ride and another 3/4 mile canoe ride! It was a magical moment as Jerry ascended from the Carderock trail to greet his parents and ABC News 7 anchor Leon Harris.

All eight of our participants were cheered on by World T.E.A.M SportsBoy Scouts of America and Push America while challenging themselves to not only complete the trail but succeed in something they had never done before!

Midsummer Night For Dreams

Saturday, August 6th, Andrew & Glenda, along with an amazing host committee celebrated the next chapter in Dreams For Kids as Andrew leaves to take over as COO in Chicago and Glenda succeeds him as Executive Director of the DC Office.

The fundraiser brought out around 300 of DFK's closest friends, supporters, and the district's brightest young entrepreneurs. We successfully raised about $6000, which will be used toward sustaining our life changing programs: Extreme Recess and Holiday for Hope.

We want to give a special thank you to VeeV Premium Spirits, JoJos, Firehook Bakery, STROGA, DISTRICT, T. Francis Cupcakes, Roti Mediterranean, Boxer of 98.7 WMZQ and our amazing host committee.

You can check out Brightest Young Things Blog for a great write up about the event and pictures too!
