The Scrapple Edition

Just finished an article due out in the Philly Beer Scene magazine. Last month, I went in search of the world's best scrapple; I pulled out my sommelier ninja skills and created some killer pairings..... for scrapple. It was a hoot to write, and I think you will love reading it.

Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the sale I offered last week. An entire month's worth of classes were purchased in less than 8 hours. Yikes.

Also, the grand masters of the Liquor Control Board have announced a major wine sale starting today. It's worth checking out via their website.

Cheers!

The marriage of wine and cheese is complementary like no other. In this special food and wine class, we introduce pairings that range from the solidly traditional to the whimsically offbeat. A wine class with delicious goudas, cheddars, and cows milk cheeses -- it's a perfect evening in the city for you and yours.

The art of food and wine pairing is a specialty at the Wine School. After all, we are the folks that created the two most popular food and wine classes in Philadelphia: the Sommelier Smackdown, and the Corked and Forked series of cooking classes.

In Culinaria we take the concept to a whole new level. In this class, you pair wine with a selection of dishes, all under the tutelage of one of our top sommeliers. A rare treat for food and wine aficionados!

Whether you are seeking to become a winemaker or sommelier --or a passionate wine lover with a hunger to learn-- the place to begin is the Core Program at the Wine School of Philadelphia.

While these programs typically take a semester, you can take the entire program in a single week this summer: the Accelerated Core Program.

The Wine Reviews

This month, we are not reviewing the best wine values available. Instead, we are reviewing the wines we are pouring in various wine classes throughout the upcoming months.

These wines are available locally, and are the best wines in their price categories. Enjoy!

Shoofly 2008 Freckle White, South Australia
A Rhone-style blend from South Australia: Marsanne , Roussanne and a dash of Viognier. Aromas of fresh pear, ginger and almond, followed by mineral and melon on the palate. Medium bodied with a zesty acidity makes this a fun and easy bottle. It also offers enough complexity to keep any wine lover interested for a bottle or two. $7.99
Find via our wine search app.

Bremerton 2007 Verdelho, Langhorne Creek, Australia
Verdelho is best known as one of the grapes of Madeira. It is also one of Australia's niche varietals. This bottle starts off with honey and peach, moves toward grapefruit and then veers to verbena and citrus on the finish.

A juicy and flirtatious wine, but with enough acidity to keep it fresh and lively. $12.99
Find via our wine search app

Montinore 2009 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Pinot Gris has found a home in Oregon. The grape has been much abused under its other name, Pinot Grigio. It's wonderful to see a winemaker willing to embrace it, despite it's questionable reputation as a tart (and simple) grape.

Marzipan and Granny Smith apples are followed by vibrant lemon and mineral. Light bodied and alive with a touch of white pepper. $8.99
Find via our wine search app

Bernardus 2009 Sauvignon Blanc Griva Vineyard, Sonoma County
Classical notes of grass and green pepper on the nose, along with plenty of grapefruit. Flavors of fig and apricot are followed by lemon zest and a touch of waxiness. The wine finishes with smoke and kiwi. A gentle roundness gives this a little more sex appeal than most Sauvignon Blancs. $11.99
Find via our wine search app

Dead Letter Office 2008 Shiraz, South Australia
A vinous cocktail of Chambord, Creme Yvette, and Morello cherries. A viscous wine with a glass-and-teeth staining hue of carmine. Sweet cherry and mocha notes rise over the huge weight of this wine, to finish with decently delineated tannin and a splash of cranberry and sage. Very nicely done. $14.99
Find via our wine search app

Erasmo 2006 Viña La Reserva de Caliboro, Maule Valley, Chile
Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a bit of Merlot and Cabernet Franc for added finesse. Kirsch and pencil shavings with a touch of brine and wet earth. Wet tobacco and grass on the midpalate turns to soft and dark fruit on the finish. $12.99
Find via our wine search app

Merryvale 2008 Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
A stunning value for Cabernet. It hits all the right notes with verve. Cedar and burnt sage take the lead, followed by allspice and currant. Offers up controlled fruit that ranges toward the dark fruits, including plum. The finish accents a black olive and cassis quality. Very nice. $17.99
Find via our wine search app

Chateau Pavillon Bel Air 2008 Lalande de Pomerol
As wine regions go, Lalande de Pomerol is typically a mixed bag. It's not actually Pomerol, but one of the many satellite regions on the right bank of Bordeaux.

This is additionally confusing since there is a Chateau Bel Air in the Pomerol proper, as well.

This bottle is a very good example of a right bank Bordeaux with beautiful fruit aspects paired with a very rustic truffle and cedar elements. Make sure to decant for about an hour before serving. $19.99

The Beers Reviews

The Philly Beer School has been offering classes for over three years now. Here are a selection of top beers that have been featured in recent classes and events.

Tröegs Flying Mouflan
I think it's fair to say that Tröegs is my favorite place in Hershey, PA. A local gem, their beers only see distribution from Ohio to Massachusetts.

The Troegenator, Nugget Nectar, and Sunshine Pils are seasonal favorites. Another is the Flying Mouflan, only released once a year in April.

The Mouflan (named after a goat) is a Barleywine, the very nature of which is a mind-numbing overload of alcohol, and a penchant for maturing nicely over the course of a few years. It revs up with the color of walnut, and flavors of caramelized malt, toffee.

The fruits go to raisins and the hops go to resin. A hint of dark chocolate merges with orange oil and brown sugar. This is an American style Barleywine, with a huge package of hops that break out with a sweet piney flavor in the attack and finish.

This is a beer to buy now when it is available, but to hold until next winter at least.

Check out the Philly Beer School.

The Lost Abbey Veritas 010
I am glad to see the Flemish Sour style is gaining traction at breweries in the states. It's a dangerous and complicated style, one that very few beer lovers embrace.

However, those of us who straddle between the beer and wine worlds tend to fall head over heels in love. Aged in oak barrels and blended with peaches, this is a well executed beer, balancing the sweet and the sour with precision.

The lactic and vanilla tones play off each other, as does an edge of vinegary acetobacter and mushroomy brettanomyces. It's a complicated and delicious brew.

In a few bottles there was a clear sign of sulfur, which is not uncommon when using these types of bacteria and yeast in brewing. Let the beer breathe for five minutes before drinking.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

Sixpoint Sweet Action
Loving the world of cheap beer is like being strapped to a lump of trash circling a comet orbiting a distant moon: your passion isn't going to matter much to anyone. Only when you break free of gravity will anyone notice.

Crazy as that is, Shane Welch of Sixpoint Brewery did that very thing: he just managed to make cream ale interesting. Cream ale is the kissing cousin to the American adjunct lager (think Budweisser), just with a different type of yeast. It's cheap, it's carbonated, it'll get you drunk… eventually.

That makes this brew all the more fantastic. Sixpoint's Sweet Action is a subtle brew. A balance between tight carbonation and rich malty creaminess. White pepper and peaches on the palate with a toasty edge and a pretty floral element. Finish with grapefruit and a yeasty note.

This beer shows a level of skill and passion that amazing to behold. Highly recommended, with a single caveat: there has been a certain amount of variation between cans. This is due to their contract brewery, and we are told this will be rectified in the near future.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

 Schlitz Gusto
Nine out of ten beers drunk in this country are limp little fizz farts that have as much character as a dead salamander.

Made with corn and rice, they are cheap to make and easy to drink. These brews have a name: adjunct American lagers, and they do not have a good reputation. Everyone has a story of a fratboy swilling Bud, a hipster drinking PBR, or a redneck guzzling Coors.

The stories are never complimentary, often funny, and occasionally scary. However, even this lowly caste of beer has its stand out. In all ways, Schlitz Gusto is that beer.

Gusto is the old school formula of Schlitz, before the move to less hops and barley malt in the 1970′s. It offers a marriage of light fresh corn flavors with just a whiff of hop aromatics. Clean flavors and its excellent carbonation are perfectly balanced for a session beer. There is also a nice sour tinge of yeast blended with a crystal malt freshness.

Highly recommended.

I was going to send out the May newsletter today, but a
few killer wines and beers were released this week, and
I want to include them in this issue.

The newsletter will be out next Monday, but I wanted to email you
(and all our readers)today, because the Wine School is running a
big sale starting this week. I wanted to make sure you were able to
take advantage of it (it's one of our best).

Here's the deal: You can have two seats to any wine class this month for the price
of a single one. We don't offer *free seats* often, so make sure you
take advantage of this deal, if you can.

Most of the classes were sold out already, but I held back a few
seats in each class and re-released them today.

To get in on this, make sure to register for two seats (it won't
work for more than two seats) and use this discount code when
checking out: may2012sale . Here is the direct link to the
classes: www.vinology.com

Hope you don't mind me emailing, but I figured you would want to
know. Have a great day!

Keith

P.S.
As always, there are some caveats: this is only valid for classes
in May. Classes must be purchased online. The offer can't be
combined with another discount or promotion. Finally, it is only
valid for classes purchased after May 8th.

Also, I have been told by our tech guy that the coupon will work for
classes in June, too. However, keep in mind that this sale is only
for classes in May. If you purchase June classes with this coupon,
you will end up with a single seat instead of two.

Welcome to #100!

Ah, Philadelphia is freaking beautiful this month. Blue sky, warm breezes, and nary a drip of humidity. It's like being back in Northern Cali, but without the hippy-dippy enclaves.

Since 2001, the Wine School has been publishing this newsletter. A decade later, over 20,000 people are subscribers. Folks from as far away as South Africa are regular readers. Most, though, are located no more than twenty miles away from our Rittenhouse location.

It's hard to imagine this is the hundredth edition of the newsletter! For the occasion, we felt a fresh new look was in order. The new design tightly integrates the newsletter with our food and wine publication, Epikur Magazine.

After a decade of writing and teaching about food and wine, we decided its was time to start a magazine. Epikur Magazine is available online, on android devices, and on the kindle. Epikur features professional beer, wine, and restaurant reviews.

We also have a nice giveaway for our faithful readers. A free signed copy of my book, Corked and Forked. All you have to do is attend a class before May 15th, and bring a printout of this newsletter*.

Cheers!

Little did I know when I was writing my book Corked and Forked, it would end up getting such wonderful reviews from the media and readers in general.

Folks loved the concept of food and wine pairing so much that I continued my cooking classes, and then we added this amazing series of food and wine pairing classes.

I really enjoy being able to cook again: I had been an executive chef back in the day. I don't miss the stress of working in a restaurant, but now cooking is a wonderful creative outlet for me. I really love being able to focus my attention on making our food and wine pairing classes a singularly great experience.

Sold out for five weeks, we just released a handful of seats to this event on Saturday, April 21st . Four tasting courses and six wine pairings for only $65. Purchase Tickets

This is an opportunity you only get twice a year. The Ultimate Cabernet class is one of the all-time greats.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the reason a few of us at the Wine School get up in the morning; and we are not ashamed to admit it.

For this class, we are going deep into our Fearless Leader's wine cellar. This is a chance for us to taste wines that rank among the best of the best.

This class is a treat for us, too. After all, we don't get to try wine this good everyday, either. Come and revel in the fruits of our addiction! Purchase Tickets

The Wine Reviews

This month, we are not reviewing the best wine values available. Instead, we are reviewing the wines we are pouring in various wine classes throughout the upcoming months. Enjoy!

La Ca' Nova 2007 Bric Mentina Barbaresco

A brilliantly crafted Barbaresco. Bric Mentina is an estate bottling from this excellent producer, and pushes me to a bit more poetry than I can usually muster.

This Barbaresco has a Buddha-like simplicity, yet it also holds a rich earthen depth. On the surface, this Nebbiolo-based wine radiates fresh cherry, strawberry, and persimmon; underneath, it spools into gravel, underbrush and long- burnt trees. Aromas of roses and chrysanthemum rise upwards, and a whiff of something more, something not quite corporeal.

Yeah, I said I was going to hit you with poetry. Didn't say it was going to rhyme. Or be any good. $32.99.
Find via our wine search app.

Le Paradis 2010 Chinon
Cabernet Franc doesn't get much play on the American wine market. Wines from the Loire Valley in France are also not very popular, either. Combine them together and you get... Chinon.

It's a shame that no-one in America drinks the wine, since it's the best value for elegant wine in the world. However, there is a movement to change that, and in the lead is winemaking consultant wonderkind Sam Harrop. This wine is part of the 'Project Cabernet Franc' that he is apart of in the Loire Valley.

All in all, this is a very good start. It offers rich fruit and licorice accented with a beautifully herbal bouquet. Nicely refined tannins on a delicate framework. Nicely done, and an extraordinary value. $9.99
Find via our wine search app

La Bastide Blanche 2010 Bandol Rosé
Pink was the color of both fallen samurai in ancient Japan and American gangsters of the 1920s . Now, pink is My Lil' Pony and Kindergarten birthday parties. That is a crying shame; too many people ignore rosé wines simply because of the hue.

This bottle is the antithesis of light and easy and sweet: it's more Al Capone than Fudgie the Whale. Copper-colored, this wine has aromas of fresh tobacco and red fruits. On the palate, the flavor goes richer, with deep strawberry and cherry flavors wrapped around a core of mineral zing and some toothsome tannins. Burnt orange peel and black tar finish off this complex and aggressive pink wine. $18.99
Find via our wine search app

Vezer 2007 La Salette
Rising from twin pads of blackberry and oak, this is a drunken philanthropist of a wine. It holds nothing back, offering up a wealth of jam, coconut, sweet cream, and vanilla. There is nothing subtle or classic or intellectual about this wine, but it delivers exactly what it intends: an ultimate experience of vinous luxury.

From Suisun Valley, this blend of Petite Sirah and Zinfandel is worth seeking out. $29.99
Find via our wine search app

Andrew Will Winery 2007 Two Blondes Vineyard
Andrew Will Winery offers up a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec from this estate vineyard in Washington's Yakima Valley.

A remarkably complex offering, this wine offers a myriad of textures: from the dense opulence of the attack, to the freshness of the midpalate, to the velvet tannin of the finish. The flavor profile is both sweet and savory.

Figs and cassis meld with coffee and campfire notes, along with a strong impression of Herbes de Provence. The midpalate brings in fresher red fruits, and serious oak-influenced flavors of chocolate and allspice. The finish rolls on and on, bringing more pleasure than anyone could expect from a glass of wine. $44.99
Find via our wine search app

Marques de Concha 2009 Peumo Vineyard Carmenere
Crimson and dense, this Carmenere is one of the best examples of the varietal on the market. It offers up plenty of oak-influenced flavors, including chocolate, coffee, and liquorice. Toasted spices and cracked black pepper add great interest to the wine's luxuriant richness. Fruit character go directly into blackberry territory, and stay there. $19.99

The Beers Reviews

The Philly Beer School has been offering classes for over three years now. Here are a selection of top beers that have been featured in recent classes and events.

Dogfish Head Noble Rot
Dogfish Head is known for it's complex and over-the-top brews. It's love of the exotic and elaborate has earned the brewery equal degrees of love and contempt over the years.

With that pedigree, the brilliance of this brew is in its simplicity. Fresh and earthy with pretty notes of citrus and flowers, this beer offers a thread between two seemingly polar opposite styles of fermented beverages.

Noble Rot marries the earthy-sweetness of grapes infected with noble rot -in the style of a Sauternes wine- and the bottle-fermented tang of a Belgian Saison. The flavors integrate beautifully, creating a very delicate brew that emphasizes the sweet funkiness of both beverages without ever becoming nasty or cloying. If you ever wanted to pair sweetbreads with a beer, this is the perfect choice.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

Uinta Tilted Smile Imperial Pilsner
I love pilsners. I love imperial beers. They are the ying and yang of my beer drinking existence, just as Family Guy and Breaking Bad are the opposing forces of my TV addiction. As Stewie Griffin should never ever join forces with Walter White, I thought these two beer styles could never coexist peaceably.

Like most things, I was right until I was wrong. Unita has done something remarkable with their Tilted Smile; they crafted a beer that both sings and shouts. The clean Pilsen malt offers up aromas of freshly toasted biscuits. This turns into a rich full-bodied maltiness on the palate, which is balanced by a light effervescence. The finishing hops poke in with the essence of wild flowers and long grasses; finally, a bright and spicy citrus note smooths it all out.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

Avery Brewing Company IPA
An attack of citrus and floral, with a malt and earth undertone. The beer offers a lovely midpalate of cream and hay, followed by a balance of caramel and sweet pine. A round body with a creamy finish dipping into a pleasantly hopped bitterness. Highly recommended.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

 Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye
Those effing 15th century farmers in Germany. They effed up the rye harvest a few years in a row, and forever changed the face of beer brewing. Since then, barley malt has been the dominant malt in beer.

Fortunately, that seems to be ending in the 21st Century, thanks to such bottles as Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye. American craft beers rarely embrace a single style, and this is no different. Hop Rod Rye is a rye beer brewed as if it was an imperial IPA.

The spicy/sour of the rye mash marries perfectly with the floral/citrus of the cascade hops. In the mid-palate, a rich cream and caramel takes control, but the beer never becomes sweet or cloying: the bitterness of rosemary and citrus oil reigns it in. In the finish, the hops take control, with notes of flowers, resin, and grapefruit. Kudos, a trailblazing brew.
Check out the Philly Beer School.

Chateauneuf du Pape and Gigondas!

Every year the Wine School goes on a trip to the Rhone Valley. This year, we will be staying in Gigondas (pictured above), which is only a short drive away from Chateauneuf du Pape.
This trip is always he highlight of the year. We spend an entire week in a luxurious country home surrounded by world class vineyards. Its a decadent trip of food and wine, organized and run by Keith Wallace, the founder and director of the Wine School.
Since there is only a limited amount of space available, slots will be offered first to our Cru Club and current academic students. If any seats remain, the trip will be offered to the general public for $2,700 per couple. Meals and airfare are not included.
This year, the trip will range from September 2nd to September 9th. Registration will be made available to currently enrolled students via a separate email.
Even better, all folks attending our academic classes in the spring semester will receive a 50% discount on the price of the trip. Yeah, it's good to be a wine geek!

Speakeasy @ the Wine School!

You are invited to our Speakeasy Friday @ the Wine School. $45 at the door UNLESS you know the code!
The code for this week is Dannyboy, and get in for $30 between 6-9pm

Our fearless leader will be leading a number of classes during the Phoenixville Flavor Festival in April. It's going to be a lot of fun. As always, we are doing this pro-bono to support a good cause. Come by and say high!

The Wine Reviews
Whites
Feudi di San Gregorio 2007 Companaro
This is one of those wines that comes with a caveat: drink this now! It's already hitting its peak.
A southern Italian white with a mineral-honey-cardamon matrix of flavors. This is really special, with a Meyer lemon freshness that ripples under stone and smoky mushroom flavors. It's age shows in the mid-palate with a spritz of orange oil and hazelnut. $19.99
Kumeu River Estate 2006 Chardonnay, New Zealand
The aromas and flavors of chalk, lemongrass, and honeysuckle scream out White Burgundy. Chablis, even. Pretty notes of exotic fruit rounds out the profile. A lovely wine that shows character and style with just the right amount of charming softness. $19.99
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
Italy
Tenuta di Castiglioni 2008 Cabernet, Tuscany
A bordeaux blend that leads with classic Cabernet notes of cigar box and mint. Gritty tannins and fleshy fruit round out this fine bottling. An excellent price for this wine. $12.99
Falesco 2009 Tellus, Umbria.
Luxurious, like a velvet cushion of dark sweet fruit. The only fault is its perfection --round, sexy, slick perfection-- which takes away some of the pleasure of drinking a Umbrian wine. $13.99
Tenuta di Biserno 2006 Coronato, Bolgheri
Olive and clove peek out of this lush glass staining Cabernet blend. A true super Tuscan, this has zero pretensions to terroir but a brilliant aptitude for deliciousness. A luxury bottling worth twice the price, if not three times. $34.99
Castello Banfi 2007 Excelsus, Montalcino
While it may be sacrilege to grow Merlot in the very heart of Tuscany, this wine may be worth damnation. A deft but decadent Merlot-Cabernet blend that spans a framework of lush chocolate and cassis, along with an elegant and tailored earth component. Flowing and persistent, this wine shows great pedigree and modernity. $64.99
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
 France
Chateau d'Or et de Gueles 2009 Cuvee Trassegum, Nimes
From Costières-de-Nîmes, across the river from the Chateauneuf du Pape. Medium bodied with a earthy component of graphite and wet clay. The fruit really shines here, with a finish of black pepper and blueberries. $14.99
Vignerons de Caractere 2009 Les Hauts du Castellas Vacqueyras
All the hallmarks of a great Rhone wine: opulent kirsh, lavender, burnt toast, and a deep and haunting minerality. A finish of burnt vanilla and sweet cinnamon ties it up with a bow. $17.99
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
Spain
Carmen Grifoll-Declara 2006 Tossals, Monstant
A deeply and profoundly delicious wine. It manages to have the luxurious depth of a feather bed and an operatic expanse of fruit under a canopy of rust and granite. As rich as fresh cream, this wine offers a finish of dark chocolate, cedar, and white truffle oil. $19.99
Bodegas del Rosario 2006 3000 Anos, Bullas.
From Murcia, the native home of the Monastrell grape, comes this beautiful beasty. More muscle and punch than a roomful of angry kickboxers. Nose of tobacco and fresh sweat keeps this wine a bit on the sinister side. However, the layer cake of fruit gives this some much needed frosting. In the end, it's a masterful wine that is unique and compelling. $29.99
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
Beyond Philly
Coming to Bacchus Selections...
Our fearless leader is the acting sommelier/wine buyer for Bacchus Selections, which is owned by a Wine School graduate. These are two of Keith's upcoming selections.
Michele Satta 2005 Cavaliere
A voluptuous Sangiovese with a slight salinity that veers to black olive but pulls back into a beautiful layered expression of chocolate. A glass-staining beauty with plump blackberry and kirsch notes, and just a whiff of Cuban tobacco in the midpalate.
Ca' del Bosco 2005 Curtefrance Rosso
A charming bottle With Pinot-like fruit and a rustic nose. A bracing acidity and floral quality drives this wine forward. This is a charming bottle With Pinot-like fruit with a rustic expression. Finishes with bright cranberry and spices. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Barbera.

Best Under $8
William Cole 2009 Albamar Chardonnay, Chile
A touch of cinnamon, ginger and allspice on the palate along with some exotic fruits. Remains fresh and bright and crisp, like an Asian pear. Not a typical chardonnay, but delicious.
Yering Station 2008 Little Yering Pinot Noir, Australia
While I never suggest purchasing a cheap Pinot, this is is the exception that proves the rule. Fresh and light and fruit-forward yet retains its varietal character through and through. A good introduction to the grape for those folks, and better than most Pinots at twice the price.
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.

Best Buys Under $15
Seigneur de Fontimple 2009 Vacqueyras
Liquorice and charcoal propel this Rhone red into a web of iron and espresso. A big pillow of dark fruit flecked with earthy notes turns the entire experience from brooding to delicious.
Atalon 2004 Merlot, Napa Valley
A Merlot for lovers of big sexy Napa Cabs. Chalky herb and cedar notes show off its pedigree while rich milk chocolate and black cherry flavors roll over the deep and rich
Damilano 2008 Nebbiolo d'Alba
Dried cherries, roses, licorice and tar, all of which are supported by firm tannins. The Nebbiolo is already rather forward in its aromas and flavors, which suggests it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. This bottle has many of the characteristics of a mid-teir Barbaresco, without the steep pricetag. Make sure to open an hour or two prior to enjoying to get the full impact of this wine.
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
Ultimate Bottles
Eric et Joel Durand 2008 Empreintes Cornas
This is the finest Cornas one can buy for under $50 (this is priced at $29.99 in the PLCB stores). Full bodied and deeply flavored, this wine flows from dark fruit to creme de cassis to burnt clay to bitter chocolate to roasted game, and back again. A complex wine that offers the rare feat of propelling and unveiling a myriad of flavors over one's palate, and doing so in a way that almost feels adulterous.
Jacques Cacheux 2006 Les Suchots Vosne Romanee
A spectacular premier cru vineyard bottling from one of the most vaunted wine regions in the world, Vosne Romanee. While $59 may not seem like a value, for this level of wine it's a remarkable value. While it is drinking well right now, this is one of those rare bottlings that will only get better over the next decade.
Arrowood 2003 Reserve Speciale Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma
Never does a Cabernet this beautiful and well-aged come into the marketplace. Anyone with a penchant for the ultimate Cali Cab experience would gladly pay two, three, or four times the asking price of $45. Drinking this wine is like sticking your face into a flower bed in heaven. You wake up ten minutes later covered in dirt and blackberries and laughing like a lunatic. The experience is too powerful for words.
Keep an eye out.

La Querciolina Istriciaia Maremma 2007 $14.99
Carctere Les Hauts du Castellas Vacqueyras 2009 $17.99

Arrayan Premium Mentrida Spain 2005 $24.99
Domaine Durand Les Coteaux St Joseph 2009 $24.99
Gran Fassian Trittenheimer Riesling Spatlese 2007 Price $24.99
Escoces Volante 3000 Anos Bullas 2006 $29.99
Antiyal Valle del Maipo Chile 2008 $39.99

A Photo Tour of the Wine School

 Winter Semester for Pro Programs.

 The Wine School of Philadelphia

Hope you are enjoying the great weather this week. I don't know if you saw, but I completely revamped our class listings over the last month or so.
I was having a major creative rush, and the new classes are a some of the best we have ever offered. The Monster class and the Mediterranean classes are really sweet. Unfortunately, you can't attend both: They are on the same day, but you should register for one of them. That said, Exotica is great, too: it's a rare chance to to try the obscurest wines in my collection.
I also just posted more spirits classes and beer classes. Enjoy!
Keith

Top Whites under $15
Bodega Quo 2009 Plumia Dry Moscatel
Here's an odd duck from the Aragon region of Spain. The Muscat grape is traditionally made into a sweet fortified wine, but here it's fermented until dry. It's both remarkable and unique. Aromas of white flowers and peach pit merge with hibiscus-scented pear on the palate. A bit of honey and lush fruit, but palate remains dry and the acidity remains crisp and clear. $8.99
Bridesmaid 2009 White
A blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley that over-performs. I always question white wines that are produced in Napa. Often, the effort for the winemaker and the expense of the final product are not worth it.
This is one of the rare exceptions. This is a label from the Napa Wine Company, and is a joint venture with Drew Neiman (the former winemaker of Kongsgaard). Neiman's hand is very evident in this wine: the artful balance of exotic fruit, fresh garden herbs, and white flowers is tremendous. A delightful and unique wine. $12.99
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
Top Reds under $15
Domaine Des Hauts Chassis 2008 Les Galets Crozes Hermitage
Typically twice the price, Les Galets is historically a major wine, with great ratings to boot. The '08 vintage was one of the very worst in recent years for the Northern Rhone, Even a wine of this pedigree suffers.
That said, this is still an exceptional wine, the finest northern rhone Syrah one will likely every purchase for under $20. Thank goodness for a bad vintage to halve the price of a remarkable wine! Classic beefy notes with pipe tobacco and granite on a clear frame of bright cherry. Will age well for another 4-5 years. $14.99
Tenuta di Castiglioni 2008 Red
Here's a modern style of Italian wine that drinks amazingly well, but is getting discounted because the following vintage (2009) is even better. Typically going for about $20, this bottle is now $12.99 in the state system. It has just enough age on it to have fully integrated it's uber-oak and flesh out the deep black fruit. A nice bit of sweet tarragon and anise on the finish, too.
To find these wines near you, use our Wine Finder.
My Favorite Monsters
Stag's Leap Winery 2007 Petite Sirah
The winery that put Petite Sirah on the map in the mid-nineties. SLW has been the standard bearer every since. Recent vintages have fallen in quality, but this vintage is bucking that trend. Cassis, lavender and licorice on the nose, with a remarkably balanced palate of wet clay, dense blackberry, white pepper, and striated tannins. At $20, that's about 30% off average bottle price. Drink this puppy with a grass-fed rib eye.
Vezer 2007 La Salette
15 miles from Napa, Suisun Valley is one of the few undiscovered wine regions left in California. This bottle, which typically retails for $70, is a great introduction to these wines. A petite sirah with about 35 percent Zinfandel added to the mix, is a gentle but deep force, kinda like Giovanni Ribisi. Syrup-like red fruit slathers over dense white pepper and milk chocolate, and bundles up with a velvet texture. Opulent and delicious. $29.99
FYI, if these are the style of wine you like --you know, MASSIVE fruit bombs with insane amount of flavor-- then you really better come to my class on Monster wines: this is going to be one of the best classes of the year.

Corked and Forked: Get Your Copy Today!

 First Friday

The Wine School of Philadelphia

Well, it eventually had to happen, didn't it? Our fearless leader FINALLY got hitched! The lucky (not sure if that's the right word...) lady is Alana.
Alana was a Washington, DC lawyer who worked in human rights law. However, after meeting Keith she moved to Philly, earned her Sommelier certification, and started working at the Wine School. We are lucky to have her. Really lucky. Sommelier-Lawyers are pretty hard to come by.
Keith and Alana were married on Sunday, August 28th, just as the hurricane died down. They left the next day. However, it wasn't for their honeymoon. Nope, it was for a working trip to Rioja Spain. Of course, for the rest of us, meeting with worldclass winemakers to drink their wine and talk shop would be an amazing vacation... sigh.
Cheers to the happy couple!

Corked and Forked: The Books is Here!
Pick up your copy today! Bring it to class and have it signed by Keith Wallace, our fearless leader!
Eric Arnold, author of First Big Crush: The Down and Dirty on Making Great Wine Down Under
I own two types of cookbooks: Those that are dog-eared and adorned with spills, splashes and burns, and those that barely have the spine cracked. Corked and Forked is sure to be in the splashed-and-burned category. This is the first useful, smart, thoughtful guide to food and drink that Ive seen in a long time. Thanks to Wallace, well all be overweight and drunk in no time.

Benjamin Wallace, author of The Billionaires Vinegar
Here, finally, is a book that puts wine in its proper place, showcasing it not in sterile isolation but as food's boon companion. I want to make a ridiculous number of Keith Wallace's recipes, and when I do, I'll know just what to drink with them.

The best wines available in Pennsylvania, as tasted by our Fearless Leader.

Important Note
As many of you know, our Fearless Leader has been leading the charge for privitization of wine sales in Pennslvyania. One of the ugly truths that has come out is that the PLCB was storing wine in very bad conditions in Philadelphia this summer.
If you taste a wine that you think is damaged, make sure to return it to a PLCB wine shop. By law, they are obliged to accept it and offer, at the minimum, store credit.
Great Under $10 Finds
These are the two best values in the PLCB stores at this point.

Durbanville Hills 2010 Sauvignon Blanc
              $6.99
Marquis Philips 2008 Grenache $6.99

The Durbanville is a very classic Sauvignon Blanc with an intense nose of wet lawn and quince. The Philips Grenache, on the other hand is a fruit bomb of the first order. Both of these wines were crafted to be luxury wines, and cleary should not be priced at under $7.
Good Value Bordeaux
It's been about five years since the last time I wrote that heading.Good value Bordeaux dissapeared from the marketplace about five years ago: the budding wine culture of China and a near perfect vintage in 2005 pretty much guaranteed that Bordeaux would never be affordable again.
Personally, I am glad to see I was wrong!

Chateau du Bousquet 2006 Côtes de Bourg $10.99
Chateau Barreyres 2006 Haut Medoc $12.99

Thes two are very good examples of modern Bordeaux winemaking: classic flavors married with new oak and pronounced fruit notes. The Medoc is a particularly good value.
Monster Ball Reds
If you have a taste for --or want a taste of-- a cult wine, then these bruisers are for you. FYI: These are the type of wines we will be opening for our Monster Ball class coming up in October.

Clarendon Hills 2005 Grenache Clarendon Hills Vyd. $29.99
Two Hands 2005 Harry and Edwards Garden Shiraz $29.99

These are two favorites for wine collectors, so it's rare to see them discounted. The expected price point on these two gems is double what the PLCB is asking for.

Luxury Burgundy
These are great values for Burgundy. One caveat, though: we strongly suggest you take our Burgundy class before trying to buy wines from this region without assistance.

Domaine Pierre Morey 2006 Meursault Les Tessons $54.99
Louis Latour 2007 Gevrey Chambertin $29.99

The Latour is very accessible, as their wines almost always are. The Morey is a profoundly luminous Mersault.
