The Wine Foundation Program

Our Wine Foundation program is beginning very soon. We can turn anyone into a sommelier-grade wine taster in a single semester, and that is an amazing and fun experience.

The program is going to be even more popular soon, since its going to be featured by the City Paper. Due to demand, we are offering two sessions this semester: Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Keith's Back!

Our Fearless leader is back teaching classes. Wine School founder & charismatic curmudgeon Keith Wallace is leading intimate "Director's Cut" classes on Friday nights. These classes are geared to people looking for the intense & gratifying wine experience that put the Wine School on the map. The first one will feature Keith's top picks  from the Rhone Valley, including his favorite Gigondas, Hermitage, and Chateneuf du Pape.

Wine Making & Beer Brewing Classes

After years of requests, we now offer a full gamut of Beer Brewing & Wine Making Classes!

The Chairman is Dead, Long Live the Sommelier

New Hope for Pennsylvania Wine Buyers.

With the loss of Jon Newman as PLCB chairman, the future of wine buying in this state looked grim. Within months of the upheaval, the once-great "Chairman Selections" were a few dog-eared boxes of wine at the corner of a few stores. It looked like the state was giving up on us deal-loving wine drinkers.

Is this the end of Newman's beloved "Chairman Selections"? Yes, and no. In their stead, we are getting a "Sommelier Collection". This may be a case of dressing the same doll in a different dress. Here is a recent "Chairman Selection" that has magically (prematurely?) became a "Sommelier Collection" wine overnight.

This is great news for consumers thirsty for good deals. Sources inside the PLCB tell us that the state is trying to move out excess inventory, and that the new program would continue where the "Chairman Selection" program left off.

In fact, the PLCB is also going to expand the Chairman Selection/Sommelier Collection concept to hundreds of more stores. Currently, the great deals are only available in the bigger wine shops. A new program has also been unveiled this week, entitled "Power Purchase", will bring similar wine deals to many of the smaller stores in the state.

Internal documents at the PLCB show that the new "Power Purchase" program will feature "recognizable brand names to start in order build credibility" with pricing " at least 30% off retail" . The first "Power Purchase" wines may be from the Blackstone Winery, but that has not been confirmed.

Looks like great news for wine buyers!

Let me end with a short note to the PLCB managers and directors who read this newsletter every month: if you don't want a journalist quoting your internal documents, then you should not post them online as part of a powerpoint presentation, okay?

This Month: Monster Reds!

Ravenwood 2002 Monte Rosso Vineyard Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley

$17.99 in PA ($25 outside PA) PLCB Code 13804

A definite must buy for Zin drinkers. Dense and full bodied, the wine uncorks with an explosion of deep black fruit and freshly roasted coffee beans. Rich but soft tannins carve out a core of caramel & chocolate that is quickly filled with a spicy finish. Damn fine.

Markham 2003 Zinfandel, Napa Valley

$10.99 in PA ($17 outside PA) PLCB Code 13770

Soft & fleshy with a core of fresh raspberries and a grapey nose of black pepper. A very good value for zin.

Pedroncelli 2004 Mother Clone Zinfandel, Sonoma

$9.99 in PA ($14 outside PA) PLCB Code 13855

A decent little bottle of Zin for the price. I add this wine to my "best buy" section with great hesitation. The last time I reviewed a Pedroncelli wine, it was quite negative, and the powers that be at the PLCB had a major hissy fit. I still haven't forgiven them yet.

Newton 2001 Unfiltered Merlot, Napa Valley

$17.99 in PA ($44 outside PA) PLCB Code 12219

A Merlot for Bordeaux drinkers. Wet earth & allspice underpin the enticing aroma of smoked plums. Well balanced fresh cherry notes and tannin deliver a multi-layered experience.

Viberti 1999 Barolo Riserva "San Pietro"

$29.99 in PA ($50 outside PA) PLCB Code 23559

Lovely room-filling aromatics of wilted violets, dried roses, and lilac... and roofing tar. This is a classic cru Barolo and at its peak. If you ever find yourself noshing on wild boar sausage with white truffles, this is definitely the bottle to have. Make sure to invite me over, okay?
